Going back the past 30-35 years, who do you consider to the best Gopher QB? It's not an impressive list.

Poll didn't show up, here are the candidates:

Mitch Leidner
Adam Weber
Bryan Cupito
Cory Sauter
Asad Abdul-Khaliq
Marquel Fleetwood
Ricky Foogie
Mike Hohensee
Tim Shade
Billy Cockerham

There was suppose to be a poll added.

Here are the candidates:

Adam Weber

Cory Sauter
Asad Abdul-Khaliq

Mike Hohensee
Tim Shade
Billy Cockerham

In my time as an active fan (I moved back to Minnesota in 1998), I would have to say Asad Abdul-Khaliq or Adam Weber. The former was a very good game manager and did not make a lot of stupid decisions, the later probably had the best arm and accuracy.

IMHO?

Sauter
AAK
Cupito

Would say that Cupito benefited highly by that great running attack. He was great at throwing that deep ball along the sidelines. It was just to bad that he didn't have the zip to complete the shorter throws to the sidelines.

You forgot Billy Cockerham. Definitely not an impressive list but I think Asad Abdul-Khaliq needs to be near the top of it. He could run some and was a pretty solid passer/leader. He would probably be my choice if I needed to pick one guy from that list to go out and win a game with.

Billy Cockerham :engineered the win against Penn State..
Ricky Foggie : engineered the win against Michigan

You're right, I've added Cockerham to the above list. I agree about Asad Abdul-Khaliq too, he did the best job of mixing pass-run. Cupito would probably go 2nd on my list.

How sad is it that we can pinpoint specific wins against programs because they happen about once every 10 years? At least back when Penn State was good (mid-scandal years).

Best pure passer, Sauter by far.

Man, just makes me think we haven't had a good QB since John Hankinson.

A lot of different type guys on the list. Hohensee and Sauter were the best passers, but were passers only. Abdul-Khaliq probably was the best combination quarterback.

Mike Hohensee would be the QB I'd like to have.

Interesting Leidner and AAK comparison
Career completion %: both are 57%
Career combined TD: AAK: 71, Leidner: 64
Career INT: AAK 25, Leidner 27
Career Rush yards: AAK: 1158, Leidner: 1395

Asad Abdul Kahliq(because he had good wheels and could throw) is the best current modern Gophers QB, with Cory Sauter(best pure passer) being a close second. Then Mitch Leidner, and Adam Weber are pretty close to being 3A and 3B. Cupito was a tough guy and played hard, but not a very good thrower. I would elevate Leidner if I actually thought they could beat Wisconsin this year, but with their defense that is pretty doubtful.

I think we tend to look at players more positively as time goes on.

Cockerham, for example, had a 52% career completion percentage.

Could you imagine if Foggie were in the same backfield as Brooks and Smith, wow! I know his arm wasn't great but just good enough with a talented backfield.

Leidner, like Weber before him will fall into that category when it is all said and done. He is not nearly as bad as some of the posters in here like to make him out to be he just isn't the great player this team desperately needs at the QB position to compensate for some talent deficiencies in other areas.

So far we have had limited glimpses at two of the options waiting in the wings (Rhoda and Croft) and they have not exactly done anything to make anyone thing that things are going to take a massive leap forward next season.

We would have to be a straight wishbone team to make that work but it would have been fun to see.

I was going to say the same thing. Today I would take Hohensee, Foggie, Cupito, Sauter and AAK for sure, although they each have different skill sets. But I remember Gopher fans being frustrated by all those guys except for maybe Hohensee and Foggie.

Since we don't get the top guys, we need to develop our QBs, which usually means frustrating growing pains.

No doubt. So many folks have strong feelings about some of these guys and .... not a lot of stats differences. Stats aren't anything but I'm not seeing any world beaters in this crowd.

OK, the thread topic is "best" QB, which I will not respond to. But my favorites, regardless of their stats, are Foggie and Billy Cockerham. When Foggie was in the game I felt like he was in control of things. My favorite QB's have the ability to bring teams back to great victories. Billy C came in relief of, I think Andy Persby, vs. Michigan St in Mason's first year and led us to an incredible comeback win, that in addition to the previously mentioned win at Penn St. IIRC a lot of Asad and Weber's numbers came against weaker opponents or during garbage time. Who is best, I don't know.

Rickey Foggie (and Darrell Thompson) are why I love Gopher football to this day.

I'd have to go with Foggie and Hohensee

Adam Weber was a legit NFL caliber player and the best on the list. He got skunked by system changes, etc and his success was attributed to Decker by most on this board. I really don't understand the hate there - maybe he was just the lightning rod for years of frustration. But in terms of ability and stats - Weber hands down...it is not really even close.
