At a Friday meeting, the governance and policy committee of the U's Board of Regents will discuss a proposal to allow licensing and sponsorships by alcoholic beverage companies, as well as production of alcoholic beverages by the university. That could open the door to beer ads at TCF Bank Stadium, university-branded microbrews and campus cultural events sponsored by wineries, perhaps as soon as next fall.

I can see beer commercials on the jumbo screen followed by a no underage drinking disclaimer.

At the Dome, where revenues were squeezed big time by the Vikings, Mac Boston had a marketing agreement with a Minnesota Brewery. Don't remember which one. Think its was Grain Belt after it was purchased by Schell's. They'd advertise at the Dome and do a lot of Co-Opt stuff with the U. It was announced and then pulled. After the Board Of Regents, and probably the Hospital, didn't want to be promoting alcohol.

Even though beer was already being sold at the Dome!

They need to tap into new revenue streams.

Seems right to mention that today is the 10th Anniversary of the snow collapsing the roof at the Metrodome. Storm started on Thursday, 12/10 and at 5am on 10/12 it caved in. They ended-up playing their first game at TCF on the 20th. Losing to the Bears.

It's kinda funny that we were one of the first to OK bear at games, but one of the later ones as far as advertising goes.

Alcohol is not the only thing to worry about.

I am afraid the revenue demands will commercialize college football like the European "Futbol" leagues' nauseating soccer jersey sponsors. They even allow adult website Porn Hub to advertise.

Somehow major American sports has managed to avoid the conspicous ads on jersey thing for the most part for a long time. I'm sure they've had plenty of chances to bring in more money and do it, but didn't.

I sure hope they don't stoop that low. Fans are already being bombarded with lengthy commercial breaks on TV.

Notre Dame is sponsored by Guinness. Come on, money rules the world and this is one way to make more.

One thing about soccer is there aren't really commercial breaks. We all know how hammered we get with commercials during football games, so that makes up for the jerseys.

MN United has a giant Target logo on their jerseys, but I don't know if you consider MLS "Major". NBA also has sponsors on jerseys. Timberwolves have "fitbit" on their jerseys.

Good point about no commercials in soccer. I would gladly trade more ads on jerseys for fewer commercials in football or basketball.

Well MLS is such a 'little brother' leage with all their names and such, not suprising they'd do ads too ;)

MLS is soccer, same thing with commercials I noted above. Makes more sense to have a large sponsor on the front.

Big Ten hockey is testing one commercial break per period this year instead of three. Also shorter intermissions. We all love it and hope it sticks post-covid.

I know when I am at 3M Arena, the intermission break is about the perfect time to use the restroom and pick up a Summit Slugfest.

Think its a good idea but not for so little money. Oh and the idea kinda originated from Ag students.

“I think there’s value in the image the University of Minnesota has had,” Darrin Rosha said. “Are we willing to give that up for $300,000?”

That’s the annual revenue that Gopher Athletics could expect from creating new partnerships with both local brewers and national beer sellers. The Duluth campus might get another $75,000 or so from men’s hockey sponsorships, said Matt Kramer, vice president of university relations.

Wisconsin and Penn State University are the only Big 10 schools besides Minnesota that now prohibit alcohol sponsorships.

The U began studying the matter last spring when agriculture students asked about establishing a University
-branded, student-made beer. They were told they couldn’t, unless the U changed its polices..

Disappointed that the agriculture students were turned down about establishing a University-branded, student-made beer as reported by Iceland12. Like it or not, it is part of agriculture and the students will learn from this venture.

I can probably still get it done in 12 min (what they are trying out this year) as opposed to 15 min. So much for trying to get a Drew's popcorn though.
12 minutes shouldn't be a problem since it's doubtful Mariucci will be full after the pandemic ends even if the squad is doing great. If you're there with someone have them grab the popcorn.
