Very happy for the young man. Wish we could have kept him.

In the below articles (part 1 & 2), they say he was playing here, but not full-time, which is why he left. To get to the NFL, he had to go somewhere he could get on the field more. Who woulda thunk we had a loaded CB room!

Would have been interesting to see what his role would have looked like this year had he stuck around for another year. The All-American thing came out of nowhere but awesome for Bishop.

He took the training he received at Minnesota to West Virginia and was successful.

No Minnesota, No All-American. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! 😂
 


He never cracked our starting lineup once in 2022. Not good enough to be a starter here, but good enough to be an All-American elsewhere.

He would’ve never come off the field this year for us. Two starters from that year were significant contributors to their teams in the NFL this year, one is a first or second round draft pick coming up and the other one is Walley. Throw in Dixon, who was all Big Ten this year and there was a lot of competition. Pretty damn unbelievable that we couldn’t make a business case to Dixon and Bishop that they would play damn near every snap at the position they wanted to play in ‘23. Seems like they had to be more to the story.
 

Grad transferred, as well, correct? Had to have. He just had transferred here from Western Kentucky.

More proof that the grad transfer rule must be abolished. You shouldn't get to use your free transfer as an undergrad, then turn around the next year and get another free transfer as a grad student.

He should've been a Gopher this year.

Did you think he looked like an all American when he played here? He played plenty, I thought he did fine, certainly not all American level.

I tend to agree with this but I will also admit I'm not an expert on CBs. Possibly a system thing?

Ya dang it....chain him up, give em 3 meals a day and tell him to be happy.
 

Not that it really matters, but Bishop is a "consensus" AA only via the NCAA's weird process of distorting the meaning of "consensus" to try to ensure there is a full team (or more than a full team) of "consensus" AAs. (In 2023 and 2020, there are 12 defensive "consensus" AAs.) It is frequently said that "To be considered a consensus All-American, a player must be chosen by at least three of the five publications utilized by the NCAA: AP, FWAA, AFCA, The Sporting News and Walter Camp."* But this is an incomplete description.

The description should also say if not enough players meet the stated criteria, players chosen as AA by two of these publications may also earn the title "consensus" AA. (The NCAA record book makes this clear.) This is how Bishop is a "consensus" AA. Bishop was First-Team AA by FWAA and Camp, and Second-Team AA by AP, AFCA and TSN. Of course, this means that in some years being picked on 2 of the First-Team AA teams will get you "consensus" AA, and some years it won't.

You're correct.

But that just reinforces the #MinnesotaSports label even harder! Why couldn't he be an AA for us?? Why did he have to leave to be able to become an AA??

Perfectly fair.

Just wondering: did Walley or T Smith get AA selected in any of the five (let alone all five) last year??

This.....He wasn't a high rated transfer when he came in or when he left.....this past season came out of nowhere. Based on some of the stories that were linked it sounds like he really applied himself in the off season and things broke right for him this past season.

It happens....sometimes it takes a long time for the light to come on for some players and for them to reach their full potential. Unfortunate that he didn't stick around and have that breakout with us but it is what it is.

That may be but he was still just viewed as a 3* .8800 transfer which is certainly not bad but doesn't scream potential All American. And when he transferred out he was dropped to a .8600 so clearly the people doing the portal rankings didn't feel like we were losing a potential All American.

Glad it worked out for Bishop and he was able to have a huge year.....but it came out of nowhere.

Him and four others were all rated 0.88 we only had 8 total. He didn’t really have any blue blood type offers.

Just curious here…if it does not matter why does it seem like you’re trying to minimize it?
