per the Beacon Journal:
No matter which team drafts Williams, all of the interested parties will certainly evaluate how he handled himself during the pre-draft process. It can be a challenging time, especially for someone who’s not seasoned. Williams left school after his redshirt sophomore season and won’t turn 21 until April 12.
Two days after the combine ended in late February, NFL.com published a story for which draft analyst Lance Zierlein gathered quotes about prospects from anonymous executives, coaches and scouts throughout the league.
“That Minnesota tight end came across as all about himself from what people in our room said,” an NFC regional scout told Zierlein about Williams. “They were a little turned off by him.”
In a recent phone interview with the Beacon Journal, Minnesota tight ends coach Rob Reeves insisted Williams is “the polar opposite of what that quote says about him.” Reeves also shared an informed opinion about why some NFL decision-makers might view Williams differently.
“The knock on him going into this whole thing — and I think he’s been told this — was the fact that he’s only 20 years old and he’s only played two years of college football,” said Reeves, who has coached Minnesota’s tight ends since 2011. “Is he ready to make this jump? So I’m all but positive he’s been coached up to go in and show a sense of confidence in himself.
“He told me about some of the interviews at the combine, and he was a little taken aback and shocked by it. I just said, ‘Maxx, you’ve got to go in there and you’ve got to stand tough with some of those because I think a lot of those guys want to see if they can get under your skin. They want to see how you’re going to handle a pressure situation. You’ve got to remain confident in your abilities and what you’ve done. Don’t let them break you down to where they feel like, ‘OK, he’s not a guy we can count on — on fourth-and-goal or third-and-short — to go make a play.’ ”
