College football in general used to be about talent and coaching.

now it is about talent, coaching, NIL and the Portal.

for a school like MN - not a top-25 school most years and trying to compete in a P5 conference - it is harder to succeed than it used to be.

hard does not mean impossible - but it's definitely not easy.
