Bands/Artists From Minnesota!

Just as it was in this live clip, today is Bob Mould's birthday. Here's a couple songs from when he was a local back in his Husker Du days.

In a Free Land
Celebrated Summer

I questioned how good YouTube's algorithms are as this performance clip wasn't pushed into my queue until today. J Mascis in the role of Grant and Lou taking Greg's part.

Dinosaur Jr backing Bob Mould up with one of his earliest standout Hüsker Dü cuts.

The same cast of characters reprised this In a Free Land throwback in Amherst, MA last night so bump.

They also celebrated Bob Mould's Birthday which is today. Hat's off to #134 . In honor of that, another Hüsker Dü classic from Zen Arcade:

Going to see Bob at the Cedar on the 28th.

The Cedar Show is going to be a game time decision for me, but I am for sure going to the Turf. If I make it to the Saturday show it would be the 12th Twin Cities venue I have seen Mould.

Met Center*
1st Ave
7th St Entry
Women’s Club Theater
The Quest
State Capital/Taste of Minnesota
Lyn/Lake
The Dakota
The Turf Club
Nicollet Mall - Super Bowl
The Palace

*Walk on with REM.

Nice. I will have just enough time to get back from the after game tailgate to shower, eat and pick-up the wife. Hopefully with a win to celebrate.

That's my time issue, the Gopher game. Hopefully it works out, but regardless can't wait for St Paul. I think it's really cool when artists play Mpls AND St Paul on the same trip.

Note, had to Edit the list, thought of 1 more.

I just caught the Soul Asylum/Loki's Folly episode of "Stage" on PBS-Ch 2 filmed at the 7th St Entry. Good stuff. I highly recommend seeking any re-airs or the YouTube links attached.

Pirner is a very good interview subject.

Unfortunately for me, I had already made plans that conflicted with the Tommy Stinson/Soul Asylum show at First Ave this past Friday. Looking at the setlist, my biggest lament is missing out on Marionette from Hang Time, which is not played live very often.

Here's a much different version, which is pretty cool with Dave Pirner on keys.

This Tommy Stinson interview is a couple years old. It was ahead of the "Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash" re-issue. Pretty good watch/listen, including how the album got the title.

I must have seen Nova Mob / Grant Hart play this gem a half dozen times at the 7th St Entry. Another time I was wondering around Coffman Union and they just happened to be playing at The Whole. I had no idea they were on the bill.

Here's a live in NYC performance from CBGB.

Over My Head

Embryonic Hüsker Dü. Mould with the Flying V.

Diane

The Replacements at the Midway Reunion show.

If Only You Were Lonely

Apologies to Grant Hart, missed his birthday by about 20 minutes. Happy Belated.

This artist is an honorary Minnesotan for sure, she was even married at 1st Ave.

Lucinda Williams played this live on Steve Earle's SiriusXM Outlaw Country show a few weeks ago. In her intro on I was able to guess who this is in tribute to just before she said his name.

Hum's Liquor

Anyone else want to take a shot?

Bob Stinson for those playing along.

1990 was when I could legally purchase alcohol. Honestly what I was looking forward to more was being able to go to see live shows without being relegated to "All Ages" shows or those at various college campus student unions/gatherings.

By that fall in short order I had made the rounds to most of the venues in addition to 1st Ave/7th St Entry including, The 400, Uptown Bar, Whiskey Junction and the Cabooze, most notably.

I remember seeing the Gear Daddies at the Cabooze on one of those evenings and the bulk of their set was songs from their yet to be released sophomore album, Billy's Live Bait. Even though the crowd and I were not familiar with the songs, they were all received rather well. Turns out that would be their last full album release of new material.

Anyway, after seeing this song played this past Friday in Rochester by Martin Zellar & the Hardways, in my opinion it sounds as fresh as ever even 3.5 decades later.

Wear Your Crown

During the intermission, I figured out I have seen Zellar in at least 11 different Minnesota cities/towns. A bit of irony, the list does not include Austin.

This Hüsker Dü album was released on July 1, 1984 so it's time to wish Zen Arcade a hearty Happy 40TH Anniversary. By the time of this 1987 performance the band was about as fractured as their classic logo. Still they were impressively manic having far more room to roam than say at 1st Ave/7th St Entry.

Pink Turns to Blue

If the frame of reference is in all of music history, then one would make a case for Chicago with it's deep rich Blues/Gospel history that was performed and recorded there (Buddy Guy, Bo Diddly, Staples Family and on and on...).

In my lifetime (60s-current) going back to Dylan, then Minneapolis/Minnesota does not have to take a backseat to any metropolis.
Did Dylan spend any portion of productive years here?

I think the grunge/ alternative scene in Seattle of the late 80's/ early 90's was bigger than any era of theTwin Cities music scene. The style of music certainly wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but it was huge.

Not sure about Dylan. I do think he was back here part time in the 70s.

While I would say Seattle from 1988 - 1994 was bigger, the early to mid80s Twin Cities era matches up pretty close, IMO.

Last night was the grand opening of Lucky Cat Records. Music aficionados will know this as the location of Treehouse Records and before that Oar Folkjokeopus, where local legends The Replacements, Hüsker Dü, Soul Asylum and Suicide Commandos got their start. Kitty corner from the CC Club on 26th and Lyndale in South Minneapolis.

At 7:30, Tommy Stinson and friends went on the small in-store stage to play a one hour set. Then, surprise guests Jakob Dylan and two other Wallflowers jumped in to join the guys to play a couple songs. (They played the Taste of Minnesota earlier in the day.) Dave Pirner and most of The Gear Daddies were among the small crowd.

Solid new album from Run Westy Run is now out. The Stones influence that was often in the background is now front and center. This has Let it Bleed to Exile era written all over it.

I finally picked this up, agree really solid.

Dialing up the original by Hüsker Dü. Hard to recognize Norton without the 'stache.

From when it was pretty new, In a Free Land

Not sure if this link to Paul Westerberg's solo SNL performance will work but here goes nothin'.

Introduced by Charlton Heston it starts with Knockin' on Mine from his 14 Songs album. It's one of PW's best rockers ever in my opinion, including with the 'Mats.

Next up he does look back to the Replacement days with Can't Hardly Wait. That seems unique to perform a song by that point was 5 years old and for a band that was done for a couple of years.

Still it's a pretty cool version utilizing the house band horns I presume.

Happy Birthday to Bob Mould. This Hüsker Dü classic was on the setlist last night at his solo show in Nashville. Here it is with support from Fred Armisen.

I Apologize

At the show last night, I sported my Replacements/Midway T-shirt. Hard to believe that's was 10 years ago.

I got 4 compliments on the attire. 3 of the guys also relayed stories of 'Mats gigs which were wild and Paul was in a legendary intoxicated state of mind.

So the drummer in the SNL clip is Josh Freese. He would later go on to join Tommy Stinson for a multi-year run in Guns N' Roses.

Per wiki it was Paul that convinced Freese to latch on for the GNR gig.

Initially hesitant about joining the band, he was persuaded by his friend and collaborator Paul Westerberg of the Replacements, who told Freese, "You should do it. Go do it. It sounds totally wrong; go do it. What are you going to do, be in some totally cool alternative band? Are you going to join the Foo Fighters or something obvious?"

Eventually...Freese would join the Foo Fighters too, taking the kit post-Taylor Hawkins.
