Bands/Artists From Minnesota!

One of the greats from Mpls. The Mighty Mofos!

Always cool to see Jim Boquist (as well as his brother Dave), formerly of Joe Henry, Son Volt and as backing up Westerberg on a tour or two. I thought he would pop up for a song at the Golden Smog shows last week, but no dice.

If you ask me, the best album from Minnesota this century is Grandpaboy-Paul Westerberg "Mono-Stereo". Hands down (as the current avatar would attest).

While I prefer Mono, Stereo also has several gems including We May Be the Ones

Har Mar Superstar: novelty act or musical genius? Discuss.

PS. Who knew Juliette Lewis could ride BMX so well?

I have a bizarre fascination with "Mr. Rabbit." I can't decide if it's stupid, brilliant or both.

Here's a band that didn't survive COVID...
... Coyote Kid put out an album just before COVID hit that's a bit of a musical about a new killer virus that gets released into the world, taking people's lives and reshaping society. Here's one of the tunes of the grime reaper doing his job collecting souls.

And another one that didn't survive the COVID crunch of no live concerts, Pushing Chain...

Best wishes to Bob Mould who yesterday posted on the gram that his COVID test came up Positive, and he had to postpone his last 2 gigs on his tour up and down the West Coast (Seattle, WA & Eugene, OR).

While Husker Du had been around the local scene for a few years, Zen Arcade in 1984 clearly took them and the entire Minnesota scene to another level. Here's the lead track, which he had also been performing on this recent tour, Something I Learned Today

Just heard Mary Lucia is leaving The Current. She (along with The Current) has certainly helped promote the local music scene.

It took me longer than I care to admit to learn that she's Paul Westerberg's sister.

Had no idea. What??

I got to meet Mary briefly when a friend of a friend was able to take us to the REV 105 Studio when it was in Butler Square, circa 1994. She asked if I had any requests and I think I said Achin' To Be, which she smiled wryly and said it would have to wait because she had just played one of her brother's songs. True to her word she did play my request before her shift was up.

In honor of Mary's sister, the subject of this song, here is Waitress in the Sky.

I helped cure her TMJ. True story.

I used to work with a first cousin of Westerberg. He said he'd go to PW's parents' house for holidays and family gatherings, and Paul would just stay up in his room the whole time and not come down.

Such a tortured artist lol.

About her leaving The Current or about her brother? Apparently her last broadcast is today. Apparently they've been siblings her entire life.
The brother. I read the other thing this morning too.

Actually today (Wed) was her next to last broadcast. Final one tomorrow (Thur). I heard the last half hour today and from how she closed, sounds like it will be pretty emotional.

The Current is obviously a dysfunctional and probably toxic working environment and seems like it has been from the beginning.

The Current has dropped to about 4th on my list of possible stations to listen to over the last five years or so. Pretty dramatic drop in my world.

"Obviously dysfunctional and probably toxic" seems a bit strong. You don't stay in a job 17 years if it's that bad, even if it is your dream job. I have to imagine MPR would fire Jim McGuinn or David Safar before it got so bad that Mary Lucia feels the need to quite. She IS The Current. Or maybe it really is that bad; what do know... It's been reported in the past that she's had trouble with stalkers. Maybe she felt the station wasn't doing enough to protect her and the other female hosts from stuff like that.

 Ok, what are 2 better TC stations (besides Radio K)?

Roll your eyes all you want but the Current has gotten seriously worse over the years. I would go to Radio K, Kfan, WDGY and maybe even Fresh Air (90.3) over the Current. The Current is the Saturday Night Live of Radio in Mpls/St.Paul..

Now you're just trying to trigger me with that SNL talk.

There just seems to be a constant drumbeat of stories and vibes over the years. Resignations, firings of popular people, gripes aired publicly and privately...not to mention, like Ted said, the product ain't great. I'm not sure they've ever had a solid identity or objective...which can't be great for morale either.

On another note, I was caught off guard with Sean McPherson's recent move over to KBEM.

I haven't found the Current terrible, just frustrating. There's way to much new stuff that just doesn't register with me at all. It's not annoying, it's just blah.

United States of Americana is still a good show though.
