Badgers beat Miami

I will admit that I was wrong about the Badgers this year.

I didn't think they would suck, but I also didn't think they would win 10 games.

Upon further inspection, it would've been pretty disappointing if they didn't win 10 games with that schedule.

The fact remains that, regardless of record, Wisconsin will always suck, and they have zero national championships.

But hey, at least their boxing team was really good during WWII.

My dad told me UW quit having boxing once someone died. I should google that see if dad was lying.

You said you watched the game last night and then you asked what the signature win was? Miami was number 15 and had a number of quality wins. There is your "signature" win.

Average teams don't win ten games, period.

Where is the Gophers signature win out of their 6? Thought so.

True, but Wisconsin did have a 5th place B10 finish this season. They tied NW for 4th, but lost to them head-to-head.

It was a dominating win last night, something the score did not reflect. But don't kid yourself, that's not a signature win. It's a meaningless bowl game where Miami players looked more interested in huddling around the heater. Unless it's the BCS, then its just another exhibition game.

Questions GV...
1) how did BB "grow as a person" this season? (from one of your earlier comments)
2) what's the Wisconsin schedule look like next year?

I don't know BB, just like I'm sure most of you making comments don't know him. But I have a cousin who coached HS in MN and is now head coach of a small college program. When I started reading these boards a few years ago there was talk then about how awful Wisconsin's coach would be. My cousin said just the opposite, obviously had a great deal of respect for the man after getting to know him fairly well. Thing is, we're talking about MN HS and college coach who remains concerned with mentoring players and building adults, not necessarily winning football games at any cost. Guess I'll take his word for it. You know, kind of a "Bring me the broomstick" kind of thing. Lots of talk on here and very little knowledge or objective analysis.

Wow...To what lengths some will go to downgrade accomplishments is comical. Just another exhibition game huh? Apparently you didn't follow much of the lead-in to the game in the previous weeks. Miami wanted this game more for what it would do for them next year than anything this year. Miami wins last night and they are a top 7-10 preseason team next year. You're the one who is kidding yourself.

I don't know about growing as a person this season, as I haven't known him personally for a few years, but he took major strides as a coach and in how his team was prepared this season compared to last. The leadership was outstanding and his emphasis placed on accountability really connected with his players.

As for everyone saying Badger fans wanted him gone, not true but there was a vocal minority that wanted him out. Last year was a disaster and his in-game moves probably cost the team at least one win if not 2 or 3. This season it appeared he learned greatly from last year, and the team saw those results. I don't think you'll find too many people hating on BB right now, unless they are just against the program. The Hole is about 60% threads about why Brewster should be fired. I'd say even before this season there was more anti-brewster rhetoric than anti-bielema.

Anyway, it was a satisfying win and most definitely a signature win. I find that its normally the losing programs fan bases who complain and say its 'only a bowl game' or an 'exhibition' when their teams lose.

Now that comment, my friend, is news to me!!! :drink:

I'd say its probably at Northwestern. It ain't much, but your team couldn't do it......

1. He was humbled after the 7-6 season. Really took a look at all aspects of the program, what his staff could do better, what he could do better. Focused on personal accountability for everyone in the program. Toned down the rhetoric quite a bit, toned down the cockiness. It was noticeable and was reported by many of the beat reporters that cover the Badgers.

2. They play a BCS team, so that should make everyone here happy. The fact that they may be worse then Fresno won't matter because they are in the Pac 10. ASU was better when they scheduled them, but were 4-8 this year. At UNLV is an alumni game and the standard 1-AA and other buy game at home. Big Ten schedule is flip flopped obviously. Badgers will be loaded. Have a chance for a special season.

It was a nice win for Bucky and I was pulling for them. I always root for the Big 10 in Bowl Season and the NCAAs (in bball), especially lately, since it has become vogue to bash on the Big 10.

I can also admit that I was wrong about Bielema. He had a nice season and for now, he has proven his skeptics wrong. Going into this season, I thought there offense would be their strength (had good receivers, TE's coming back, and the emergence of John Clay). Their D was impressive, and that was a surprise for me.

I am still not 100% sold on Bielema however. He doesn't seem to have the same patience with the gameplan as Alvarez had. That changed a bit last night, but I thought Bielema really hurt Sconny against Iowa (play calling) and tOSU. But yeah, he has proven to do a pretty good job of finding and developing talent.

What do you think a bowl game is?

Would you rather see the Badgers beat a conference opponent or win a signature bowl game a few days after Christmas?

Do you really believe that Miami wanted to win last night so they could be ranked in the top 10 next August?

Agree with many of the posts here, BB was in question before the season began, but put together a good, not great, season. The NW loss sticks out in my mind...

The W football program is years ahead of the Gophers, but hopefully the Gophs can get there soon.

If the gophs had beat Miami last night, this board would be full of people talking about a possible Rose Bowl next year...

Since there would have been a thread started if the Badgers lost, I thought I would start one because they won.

Now that the season is officially over, the theory that the Badgers program is sinking into the abyss can officially be put to rest.

12,9,7,10 is no longer a downward trend, so you will need to think up something new for this off season. Please use this thread to admit you were wrong about the Badgers this year. It seems like an appropriate spot to do it.

The good news is that 10 starters return on offense and since we all know by reading this board that experienced players are the key to success, the Badgers are primed for next year. Don't worry though, as Schoondler will tell you, 2013 and 2014 are looking really bad because Rivals does not like the Badgers 2010 recruiting class.

Good luck against Iowa State.

so pathetic......

I wanted miami to win but came away impressed with the badgers. They had the right plan coming in and just beat on miami.

A good win for the Badgers and the Big Ten.

Maybe the Badgers don't suck as much as I thought.

Oh, wait....

Yes.

They do suck just as much as I thought.

Many were nervous. I could not understand why. Had a lot of talent coming back. I thought they would win 9 or 10 before the season started. There are a lot of worry warts that are Badgers fans. Kind of like many of the Gophers fans on this board. To be fair, the fans on this board have more to be worried about.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that the Badgers fans you know are not a representative sample. There is not a sane Badgers fan that wanted to fire a coach that won 28 games in his first three years.

There is a ton of NFL talent coming back next year. The Badgers are fine until 2014 according to Schoondler so I am not worrying until then.

I know TWO sane and knowledgeable badger fans who at the start of the season, and maybe one of them still now, wanted coach Bert BuoulaimiyQa to be fired, but i am beginning to attribute that to the amount of time that they talk football with me...

John Clay sucks

Niiiiiiiiice

Thanks. Now we can get on to the serious stuff. :)

As I said, I am impressed with the number of people coming forward in this thread and eating a little bit of crow.

I admit i fell for the "fall of wisky" theory.

I apoligize, and in return for my mistake, i will sing the dreadful song.

"on wisconsi........i can't do it....

Agree wholeheartedly. I hope we never get to the point of chanting like they do in the SEC but I support the conference 100% this time of year. I was at the Outback UW loss to Tennessee and I really appreciated the stunned silence we heard when they mentioned that Michigan was up on Florida.

By the way, the Tebow era at Florida:

Won 88.4% of games against all opponents
Won 85.2% of games against SEC opponents
Won 66.6% of games against SEC West Champions
Won 50.0% of games against Big Ten

I was going to write a similar post in response to the UW program on the wane discussion over here ealier this year and GVBadger beat me to it.

Here are a few important facts:

1. Bielema has won 73% of his games as a HC. Most programs would take that in a heatbeat. When was the last time MN had a football coach with that kind of a %?

2. UW has won 10 games only six times in its not so storied history. BB was the HC during two of those years.

3. The Badgers are one of the youngest teams in college FB and return a ton of starters next year and other players who made significant contributions.

WE ARE NOT ON THE WANE

Sadly, both WI and Iowa have proven me wrong this season, and the Gophers fell just about where I expected.

As for me Hy, both the Badgers and Gophers finished right where I expected and the Hawks slightly exceeded what I expected. Expect similar outcomes next year. Northwestern far exceeded what I expected while Illinois and Michigan continue to vastly underachieve.

Thanks for posting.

Can we look forward to more of the same? If so, can you and GV just get together and write as one person? We can really only handle one Badger fan justifying his fandom at a time on here.

Might I suggest http://buckyville.yuku.com/ ? That's a site where you might find a more like-minded community.

True, but Wisconsin did have a 5th place B10 finish this season. They tied NW for 4th, but lost to them head-to-head.

There are no tiebreakers for conference standings. The only time tiebreakers are used are to determine the B10 representative for the BCS bowl.

Amazing...

This is so classic you almost couldn't make it up.

Wisconsin beats a team over 2000 miles from Minnesota and their fans are on a Minnesota msg board thumping their chests about the win. Huh????

What the hell is it with the Badgers level of insecurity?

I'm happy the Badgers won yesterday, it's important for the conference to improve their national perception and that was a step in the right direction. I think it would be naive to say that the field conditions (nice turf?) didn't play a factor in negating Miami's speed advantage but it was a very nice win nonetheless. Great start to the Big Ten bowl season!!

I have to agree with some of my Gopher fan counterparts when they say the season had to be at least a little unexpected for even the most ardent Badger fans. Nobody remembers that they started the season with one of the biggest question marks in the conference at the most important position on the field?

Plain and simple, the Badgers had a good season because Tolzien played FAR above what anybody expected. By way of comparison, with no change in OC's or offensive scheme, if Weber had played even MEETING modest expectations this year, the Gophers would have 8-9 wins right now. Similarly, if Tolzien had played like a typical first year starter, the Badgers would be hovering around the .500 mark about now, even with that schedule.

As far as the "demise of the Badger program", I have two comments; it takes more than a couple years to completely erode an 85-scholarship program, just the same way it takes more than a few years to build one up from mediocrity (i.e. Minny). I would never expect Wisconsin to sink 4-5 places in the BT standings.

And GVBadger, if it makes you happy, I will absolutely have no problem conceding this: I completely underestimated the significance of having Chryst on the sidelines in Madison. As long as he's there, BB will be employed and the Badgers will be at least somewhat relevant. If he ever leaves, BB will be on a street corner with a cup in his hand within 18 months.

Wisconsin should be proud of where they are. Barry spent a lot of years buildilng a decent program, all BB has to do is not f'k it up TOO bad and they'll continue to be the 4th-5th best team in the conference.
