B1G tourney game 1: Gophers versus Washington (3-5-25)

That’s a bad draw for us. We aren’t going to score with them, so we need to do something defensively to limit their scoring. We need to be quicker on our switches and guard the 3 point line better but we also have to stay in front of them. It might even require taking Sophie out of the game for someone quicker to handle their high post, 4 out offense.

Agreed. Probably gonna have to sub offense and defense more at the 5 this game with the high ball screens and motion Washington likes to run. I like Gophers getting another crack at Washington.

Two teams heading in opposite directions, one team is surging the other team is floundering. Don’t like this draw, especially since the Gophers lately cannot stop anyone and certainly cannot keep up scoring wise either. Maybe they save their best victory on Wednesday?

Interesting both teams are on the last 4 in on the bubble watch. Big game! Need to find a way to get a W!
Meanwhile others (like Iowa State and Virginia Tech) are getting the Quad 1 wins that can help them move past the Gophers.

Virginia Tech may well pass the Gophers when all is said and done, but it won’t be due to any recent Quad 1 wins. Their only Quad 1 win came Jan. 9th at Georgia Tech.

They play Georgia Tech again in the ACC Tournament, so that’s certainly a game to keep an eye on.

The Gophers could do themselves a huge favor by beating Washington. Figure out a way to make someone other than Ladine their top scorer in the game and they have a shot.

Looking forward to the Big 10 tournament. This time I'm hoping the Gophers decide to and can stay a little longer. Tournament time is who want's it, who want's to win more. It's really a time where at least when I played where you put everyone ego's aside, and find a way to come together as a team, and give your best effort. I see a lot of that in these Gophers, a willingness to fight for a rebound, blocking out, or making a key steal or a tough basket. Sending Good vibes and health to the Gophers this week. This team can surprise people. Still a lot of season left to play, Go Gophers!

Do the women only play 18 conference games while the men play 20, because the women's season ends a week earlier for the BIG tournament? I was wondering why they don't play a 20 game BIG season like the men?

Was happy when Dawn P won a tournament game last year, hopefully showing that Minnesota under her regime will show up in the BIG tournament. Will be there in Indy to see Coach P in year two, hoping to watch more than 1 Gophers game.

When you look at the tourney record book, the Gophers record of futility in the BIG tournament is hard to fathom. I'm fuzzy on Whalen's injury history as relates (if at all) to the BIG tourney, but the Gophers were 1-4 in BIG tourney play during her years. If and more likely when Coach P wins 2 games in a single BIG tourney, that will match the 2005 team as the only Gophers team to win 2 games in a single BIG tourney.

Including the 1982 tournament, and the 30 years of tournament play from 1995-2024, the Gophers are 12-31 in the BIG tournament, which is dead last in terms of winning percentage. To put the Gophers BIG tournament history in perspective, Clark led Iowa to a 12-1 record in her four years of BIG tournament play, equaling the Gophers' 31-year win total.

That's right. I think Lisa Bluder said last year the coaches decide on 18 or 20 and with the tournament being earlier they don't want to cram the schedule more.

Whalen was injured her senior year (when she memorably returned, as if nothing had happened, in the first round of the NCAA tournament to slip by UCLA).

This team slightly underperformed. I don't think they would have done much better with Braun playing all year.

Coach needs to get better, more athletic tall players who play in the paint, and she desperately needs another good shooter.

If coach can't get some transfer upgrades, the team's ceiling is probably a 1st Round NCAA Tournament exit.

Coach needs to find some WNBA talent if she wants to win.

She was wearing a bandage with a brace on a finger if I remember right, the first round games too.The UCLA game had incredible atmosphere. I was in the second to last bench row upstairs, Williams was so loud and rocking when Gophers went on the big run. Whalen was egging on the crowd and it was buzzing.

I think they would have done much better with Mara, who is a three level scorer that can create her own shot and draw fouls at the rim. Watching Ladine play at the Barn last week really reminded me of how Mara plays and carries herself when she's able to play.

This team, without Braun, hung in there with even the best teams in the country. They only lost to USC by 13, when UCLA also got beat by USC by 11 and 13 points the two times they met. The Gophers lost 5 games by 8 points or less. Mara's offensive and defensive contributions (plus the extra depth and energy from the bench not having to play so much) could have easily made that difference.

Lots of bricks and leaving players wide open and they’re making us pay. No clue what is happening with the defense.

Not much has happened either, other than early foul trouble for Battle. Looks a lot like the game last week.
Except the Gophers came out swinging in that game and were up big. Hoping we can channel some of the energy Washington did for their comeback.

Really wish Hart would stop dribbling with her head down.
We’re going to need about 30 points from GG
