B1G Recruiting Rankings

This an Indiana Hoosier Blog linking a Bleacher Report Article?

Ugggghhhh. We're in last place even before Jeff Jones bolts.

Ugggghhhh. We're in last place even before Jeff Jones bolts.

If we are still in last place in 2015 then we will have concerns. The 2014 class does not reflect this year's success.

We're winning games now. If we want to win in the future, we can't keep having the worst recruiting classes in the B1G

By your logic we shouldn't have won any games then because we have been at the bottom of recruiting the last couple years too. So... again, I don't see why this is a big deal. Besides, all the numbers in that article will change. We don't know for sure we will be last. These wins and hopefully a win tomorrow will get us more commits.

Yes, because looking good on lists equals outstanding player development, mental toughness and winning football.

On an individual class basis it's really difficult to use rankings to gain meaningful insight. However, there certainly is a trend that the teams that perform well on the field generally have recruited better in previous and subsequent years. It's really hard to have prolonged levels of success by getting 'lucky' with diamonds in the rough so to speak. Over the long haul, we'll need to improve our recruiting to remain highly competitive. Success can drive that improvement in recruiting but it takes time.

I love rankings like this that take # of recruits into account. If we had 35 scholarships open and took nobody over a 2-star, we'd rank higher than out current class.

These kinds of rankings are a joke

Being last is not ideal, but if we're having success on the field it is hard to get worked up over it. It will improve. We need to continue to beat the teams we beat this year, plus Illinois/Purdue regularly and we will be fine.

Yeah, that's another reason that you can't look at individual classes to determine success. It's got to be a prolonged look at it and in that regard we need to improve, undoubtedly, for sustained success but I believe the improvements we've seen on the field will produce improvements in recruit's living rooms. Either way you look at it, I think we do need improvement but we'll get there.

It does not include the players the Gophers hope will commit soon.

This. Also, at this point, I don't worry too much about stars with this coaching staff. If the freshman and sophomores from this year are any indication, they obviously know what they're doing more than the people who determine the stars do.

LOL - Again, we have another of our standard "The sky is falling" strings for recruiting. Some of you haven't learned a thing at thing from our pasts strings. Since you haven't, it is not worth posting the same information again but I will give you one clue as to what the problem is. The problem is that at this point we have only eight verbals at this time. We are also going to have a small recruiting class because of a limited number of scholarships available. How this all plays out only time will tell but all you Chicken Littles need to let this play out.:banghead::banghead:

Huh? Brewster had some great recruiting classes. Those kids are the seniors now.

Have you already started drinking for the Wisconsin game? ;)

You at least have one point that makes sense: We have a small recruiting class because of a limited number of scholarships this year.

Nope, sky isn't falling. You'll actually see in my responses that you can't look at individual classes but trends over several years. One of those reasons is exactly what you pointed out. Over the longer term though it does appear to make differences as people have pointed to statstically analysis that has been done (maybe over at OTE or something?).

But...but...but we don't want to look bad on these lists. Don't you see how that impacts our success? Seriously, I wonder how coaches went about recruiting before the arrival of rankings.

By my count 13 of 46 (28%) recruits from 2009 and 2010 have played or are playing enough snaps to note. Add in the pre Dec. 6th commits in 2011. 15 of 53. 14 if you don't count Shortell.

Epping
Hutton
Kirkwood
Lenkiewicz
Manuel
Perry
Vereen
Hageman
Keise
E. Olson

M. Carter
Kendall Gregory-McGhee

T. Olson
M. Shortell

Plus, how your class ranks BEFORE any of the kids get to campus does not always indicate they won't be good players and help you win games if they're well coached. This is kind of like the kid whose last name starts with Z fretting because he's always in last place before the contest begins!

This is such a dense discussion it makes my head hurt. Do you people actually read anything that's written before responding or do you just drub up the same old lines 'these kids haven't been on campus yet how can we tell if they're good'. Nobody is saying that. In fact, we're saying the exact opposite that you can't look at individual examples to draw a conclusion. However, if you look at say, trailing 4 year averages, it generally is a prettty good indicator of predicting success ofa football team. Exact? No. Pretty good? Yes.

I actually think Kill and his coaches are one of those outlying data points in the science of recruit rankings v success. Few are in a positive way, but a few programs/coaches consistently perform much better than their recruit rankings and others just simply find guys other programs miss. I believe Kill is that type of coach, in the mold of a Bill Snyder at KSU, Gary Patterson at TCU, Peterson at BSU, even wisky under fatty ahole the past few years won alot of games with an 08 and 09 class rankings in the 40's. Some programs buck the trend, it appears Kill runs one of those.

I used to think the world of Bill Snyder and thought that we could compete with 80+ ranked recruiting classes like he did.

Then I realized he rode the back of his once in a lifetime quarterback. Now they are pretty lousy.

Totally possible it's just very difficult to have prolonged success in that model. You see it with the recent demise of TCU and BSU. Neither are terrible but their pushing for NC or even BCS bowls appears to be a bit more of a flash in the pan.

Recruiting is such a crap shoot and a game in its own. I was watching the BTN weekly behind the scenes show. Last night was a replay of the one with Hackenburg from PSU and the MSU DB, Darqueze Dennard. Dennard had one offer from a Florida directional school (which was being dropped for the JC player) when the MSU DC (Narduzzi) saw him while attending a game of another player. Narduzzi later saw his film and made an offer. All of a sudden with a couple weeks before signing, South Carolina and others came calling. Dennard started to waiver on his commitment to MSU. They held on to his commitment and the rest is history.

2 Star recruit.

A lot will happen in the next two+ months.

I remember that happening to a few of our recruits last year i.e. Demaris Peppers with Nebraska, Alex Mayes with I believe Oklahoma and Baylor, and of course Nate Andrews who we lost to FSU.

I think Kill and staff are bullet proof relative to their recruiting so far. The keep getting kids like Murray who is playing like a high four star would be expected to play in his Soph year that will continue. Our class will rank low this year no matter what we won't have numbers.
