B1G Game 8: Gophers host Michigan (1-22-25)

Absolutely nothing from Hart and Heyer. What the hell are they even doing out there if the team is just gonna jack up threes and miss easy jumpers? Very winnable game and they let it slip away.

I wonder if these two are under the weather. I know they have been hit with the bug.
Heyer really really needs to work on her outside shot.

Tough game to lose, but it was a well played game. Michigan was hot from the 3-point range. Minnesota couldn't get hot at the end. Good learning experience. Beat Wisconsin.

I miss the 3 point defense we had earlier in the season, maybe it was the competition? We need Mara back and for Heyer to find her shot. But yes Michigan looked more poised their freshmen play well beyond their years. Would like to see a rematch down the road in the BIG tournament.

According to sidearm stats, Heyer's last shot with 2:35 left in 1st quarter
Would seem to me she is maybe still recovering from the crud and is fighting the offense and keep up at times on D from the normal. Still tough on the rebounds tonight when in.

Battle had a heck of the game, but you could tell as shots start coming shorter that playing 40 minutes is not ideal. Last 4-5 minutes we were struggling to get anything to fall.

Tough game to swallow because I am sure they wanted this W bad too just like all of us. Still tough grueling stretch coming up where everyone needs to be on board.

We really need Mara Braun back for the California games. Could use her back Sunday, to knock the rust off get her back in the rotation and game flow. Not sure if she is cleared? Team could use another scorer to take some pressure off. Team looked a little gassed in the second half tonight.

Battle is a great point guard, defensive player, and shooter. She is the most consistent shooter on the team. It is hard to do all those aspects for almost 40 minutes. I sometimes think it would be good to play Battle as a shooting guard with her wonderful mid-range pull-up jump shot and her defensive skills. But, we don't have another consistent point guard who can distribute the ball.

I would be shocked if we see her for the LA games. I don’t know anything but not sure why my gut is telling me Iowa game.

A few things

-Amaya Battle was the best player on the court. Period. Yes, I know the free throws but she was doing everything she could to try and will the team.

-The two fouls on Mallory were a joke! Both of those belong to Olivia Olson. Back-to-back possessions, the "50/50" block/charge call went 100% against Mal.

-Late in 2nd, the Gophers were up 34-33, and Amaya forced a turnover, Hobbs fell on her, and a foul was called. But the Gophers were in the Bonus. Why did they not get free throws off that foul?

-This was a game where Taylor and Mara were missed. Mara scoring and Taylor would have thrived in the physicality and defensive side against this Michigan team.

-Wether Mara comes back or not, this is a Michigan team I would welcome a second crack at during the Big Ten Tournament.

Agree that Battle really did try to will this team last night.

We were having a watch party and everyone joked that even tho Gophers were the home team it was Olson that was getting the home calls regarding the fouls on Heyer.

This game was so close, if Battle just makes her usual free throw shooting percentage and Holloway makes just 50% of her layups it’s a Gophers win.

Gophers are so close to getting a signature win but are a few possessions away at this point. Their 3 point shooting needs to be resurrected somehow. Somehow they need to incorporate Johnson into the offense until Braun gets back.

Lastly I wonder about the health of the team, many looked gassed in the second half. Thinking some were playing less than at 100%

same here, but I also thought she should have attacked because shooting the 3 isn't her shot.. drive and kick or attack.
She is good on D and can bring up the ball. But she just can’t shoot. And her layups generally end up with her on the floor, and often a courple FT’s, but seldom a basket. She is needed on defense, but then for all practical purposes you are playing 4 on 5 offensively.

I agree, she is better suited to play shooting guard. Taking a team leading 18 shots with only one assist is not stellar point guard play. There were too many instances when she was into her dribbling routine and other players were waving their arms to show they were open. Michigan moved the ball much better. That said, Battle has improved a lot as an all-around player, just not as a point guard.
