Last season’s meeting between the Gophers and Huskers was a foul fest shootout with a glorious capper.

Jaz Shelley led Nebraska with 37 points (hitting 7-13 from three and 8-8 from the line. Mara Braun led Minnesota with 28 points (hitting 3-4 from three, 7-8 from the line plus grabbing 7 rebounds).

It was a bad loss for the Huskers who this Sunday afternoon visit Williams Arena sporting a 4-1 conference record with a loss to Indiana 69-91 and wins over @Michigan State 80-74, Maryland 87-81, @ Wisconsin 69-71 and Illinois 56-48.

The Husker starters (stats are conference games only):

Jaz Shelley
the 5’9” grad student guard returned to lead the Huskers. In Big Ten play, the Aussie is averaging 10.4 points and 4.4 rebounds in 34 minutes per game. She is 11-36 from three.

There’s a lot of excitement in Husker land about the development of 6’3” junior center Alexis Markowski. She averages 16.2 points and 11.8 rebounds in 29.6 minutes per game. And you can’t ignore her from behind the line where she is 5-11.

Holding her own in the excitement sweepstakes is 6’2” freshman forward Natalie Potts a multiple B1G Freshman of the Week. The mobile Potts averages 12 points, 6 rebounds in 27.8 minutes. Thus far she is 0-11 from three.

Darian White is a 5’6” grad transfer from Montana State. The guard averages 6.4 points, 3.4 rebounds in 27.5 minutes. She is 1-3 from three.

The final starter is Maddie Krull. The 5’9” senior guard averages 4 points and 2.4 rebounds in 18,9 minutes. She is 4-11 from three.

Notable players off the bench:

Sophomore Callin Hake is averaging 7.6 points and 2 rebounds in 18.8 minutes. The 5’8” guard from Chanhassen is 8-16 from three.

6’0” freshman guard Logan Nissley averages 5.6 points and 1.6 rebounds in 14.6 minutes. She is 8-18 from behind the arc.

"The Huskers overcame some rough stretches of shooting with great defense and rebounding to beat Illinois 56-48 on Thursday.

Minnesota will have two extra days of rest and home-court advantage.

“This is the time of year where you have to be ready and willing for everything and bouncing back quickly matters,” Nebraska coach Amy Williams said."

Quite the lineup today of west Metro basketball talent. Assume there are some long-standing friendships, jealousies etc. among the players on the two teams given their shared/close geographies and overlapping histories.

Nebraska
Callin Hake - Chanhassen
Annika Stewart - Wayzata
Kendall Coley - St. Louis Park

Gophers
Mara Braun-Wayzata
Amaya Battle - Hopkins
Mallory Heyer - Chaska
Nia Holloway - Eden Prairie

Loving the defense so far. Getting people in front of us, getting deflections and controlling the boards

They showed up in the 1st quarter. 4-16 FG (1-8 3FG). Hope they remain consistent!

Sanders had a couple nice finishing drives.

The thing that jumped out at me in the first half is the outstanding defensive job that Shelly is doing on Mara Braun. Up in Brauns face, fighting through and recovering quickly on screens. She's been impressive. Those two might just cancel each other out, though good offensive players usually find a way to adjust and get going again.
Gophers defense and rebounding has been pretty good.
Nice to see Sanders getting some run and playing effectively in the first half.
Just when the Gophers need a good shot in the 2nd quarter, Heyer does what she does. Gets a good post up, makes a tough shot through contact.
Maggie playing well too.

Feel like this game should be a blowout but can’t complain about a 13 point lead. We are a 4th quarter team!

And then the dreaded third quarter…hope they can snap out of their shooting doldrum. Huskers did their job getting Hart out of the game

5 minutes into the 3rd and they give up the lead. Nebraska taking it to them.

I feel like this year Battle is looking more for her shot and still turning ball over.
9.1 shots per game last year. About 10 shots per game this year. Shooting 40% which is much better than last year I think.
3.8 turnovers per game last year. Closer to 3.1 this year.

Not sure why I just didn’t look on EsPn you are right on shots. Shooting percentage about the same except for lower in 3% and rebounds down was expecting shooting % to be a little higher when I read she spent a lot of off season working on her shot. Hit the big one when needed
