B1G Game 4: Gophers Visit Michigan (1-9-24)

Gophers women's basketball rebounds with 82-66 victory at Michigan

Mallory Heyer's game-high 21 points led the way as the Gophers, who had dropped two consecutive Big Ten matchups, handed Michigan its first home loss this

In a game with just as many hot streaks as cold, it was a blistering fourth-quarter start that made all the difference.

The Gophers women's basketball team (12-3, 2-2 Big Ten) snapped a two-game losing streak Tuesday, taking down Michigan (11-4, 2-1 Big Ten) 82-66 on the road on a night when the team made a season-high 15 of its 28 three-pointers. Sophomore Mallory Heyer led the scoring with 21 points on 6-of-9 from three, while first-year Grace Grocholski, whose 16-point fourth quarter allowed the Gophers to pull away for good, totaled 19. The team's leading scorer for the season, Mara Braun, added 17 points of her own.

Minnesota's win marks the first time the Gophers have beaten Michigan since 2018 and the first time they've done so in Ann Arbor since 2014. With their 12th win of the season, coach Dawn Plitzuweit's squad eclipses last season's win total in half as many games played..

Good thing GG didn’t stop shooting 3’s after missing some. She has a lot of confidence in her shooting.
No matter how many shots a good shooter misses, as long as you're taking open shots and with-in the rhythm of the offense, most coaches will be OK with a good shooter taking open 3's. If you stay confident and aware of "good shot vs bad shot", 0-5 is no predictor of the next open shot being a miss or a make..

It got a bit sloppy in the third, but finished strong and pulled away for the win. Limit the turnovers and make your shots, I'm sure they talk about it in practice and seeing it in-game has to boost their confidence. Could've had that win against Maryland, but definitely needed to win against Michigan going into probably their toughest part of their schedule. We'll see what this team made of in the next few days.

I liked how smooth Battle was going to the basket. She was under control and made some nice shots. I hope this continues.
Was just typing a post about this 😂. Played so much better than the Maryland game and it makes a big difference —along with others hitting 3s. Seeing a similar thing with Hawkins on the men’s side. When he is in control a chance for a win is much greater.

As a couple others mentioned, missing bunnies is an area to get stronger in. Need to make those to upset the upper teams! Still got a 16 point road win! Hopefully Brett didn’t suffer a major knee injury. Already was wearing a brace.

Battle's game has improved, especially her shot. She had 4 assists and 4 Turnovers.
The ratio isn't good for your.point guard. However she has improved in limiting her Turnovers and playing in control! Much like the team, it's going in the right direction!

believe the football team was coming home tonight.. so I'm figuring a lot of people were at the airport.
That is correct. During the game, they did show folks in the rain at the airport as the football team came home. On national championship game day, the Crisler Center was packed with fans watching the football game and they had shown a clip of that, too. We'd all have done the same thing if it was the Gophers coming home with a national championship. Box score said 2,112 at the game, which was overly generous. Michigan women average about 3,500 for home games right now.

Or kin the words of Pete Marducci, “Shooting is like toenails, it always comes back.”
