B1G Game 4: Gophers host Illinois (1-5-25)

That game was a lot of fun to be at. Was nice to see two teams playing really well and slugging it out. Nice rally and comeback by the Gophers. If you missed today and can make it Wednesday I hope you do. Gophers womens basketball is quality entertainment and team that plays really good defense. Illinois brings out the fire in the Gophers. We will likely see, play this team again in Big 10 tournament.

It was a fun crowd as well -- the first I've seen that felt like a factor this season. And Illinois' offense was really lost without McKenzie. Super-stagnant and the Gophers were able to capitalize.

It’s a nice little cluster of 3 B1G wins in a row.

Probably not this thread related; but, have we heard if Hart is getting another year? I know they applied for it.
We’re going to miss her and Stewart. What’s the big situation look like for next year?

Big win. Defended the home court. Defeated a team that they need to beat to move up in the Big Ten. They seemed out of sorts most of the game but Illinois let them hang around. Then, they suddenly found their game in the last 3:30. They looked like a determined, poised, seasoned team during crunch time. Go Gophers!

Congrats on win #400, Dawn!

And, in case folks in attendance didn't notice.....our favorite referee (not!) Roy Gulbeyan (#42 in our WNBA hearts) was in the officiating crew today.
Concur on the congratulations to coach, but why did you have to then mention he who should not be named. That referee, all I can say is geez man what is your deal.

Not sure if it was him but that Mallory Heyer offensive foul/charge call was objectively heinous. The Illini player was not set and gave her nowhere to land.

Sorry..but kind of hard not to mention the elephant in the room. I've never liked him as a ref well before the awful call(s) against the Lynx.

I thought Dawn played the right players in the 4th quarter. Stewart played well, Tori came to life, Mal finished a crucial layup. Turning point is Adalia going in for a layuo, Annika does a run by and Adalia misses and fouls out and Grace makes the free throws. Clutch free throw shooting at the end to pull away.

Agreed, coach went with the right match-ups. Annika Stewart really hustled back on D on that play, it made a difference in the outcome. Adalia MacKenzie is quite a player for Illinois, she has been a thorn against MN. Hopefully in the future we give kids like that good reason to stay home and play for the Gophers. Glad we have all those Minnesotans and Wisconsin kids on our current roster, all these young women are geling as a team.

Whalen tweeting about the game is a reason she will always be the GOAT Gopher for me. I know she didn’t do well as a coach, but finding a way to move past that and be a supporting alumni is honestly so very Whalen of her. She has always had so much pride in the University of Minnesota. I also know that this isn’t her first time tweeti about them, but I wanted to point it out.

second straight game that Grace has played 40 minutes.. and she was HUGE for us today.. 19 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.. she has IMPROVED so much defensively this season. she reminds me of BC from the Lynx, just does all the little things not always scoring but does whatever the team needs.

Heyer recorded her 13th career double double. Mal has been playing very well as of late. has scored in double figures in 6 of the last 8 games. he rebounding or keeping balls alive for us is so important.. she had a HUGE late game rebound for us.

what a GRITTY win for this team..

also fun to see the crowd size growing with each home game.

I enjoy how perturbed opposing coaches get as Grace walks into a three.
We're a dangerous team when a double-double Heyer is on the court
