At the end of the day it is a win on the road. But really hope we haven’t lost Scalia even for one game. She is one of our most valuable freshmen
 

Scalia was moving real slow after the game, hopefully she can get healthy by Monday.
 

What a night for Powell.

And for Adaschyk and Scalia too.

Couldn’t have done it without both Bellos. And two fouled out Bellos is a scary thought.
 


refs really took over for Wisocnsin in the 2nd half.. calling a lot of ticky tac fouls.. on pretty much every possession.. had the refs been like this on Sunday.. both teams would have fouled out before we reached overtime..

Masha with the DAGGER and her best scoring game of her gophs career.. Powell is fun to watch.. wish we had some posts she could drive and dish to.. not many can catch her quick passes..

A few things really allowed Wiscy to mount a comeback.

One, offensive rebounds. The Gopher bigs did a poor job of blocking out and hanging on to the ball when the got their hands on it. Taiye being out was a big factor on that.

Two, as good as Powell and Scalia are they are still freshman. Powell had a few bad passes and Scalia took some questionable three pointers. On at least two of them, it wasn't a bad idea to shoot, she just set up too far outside for shots that were NBA range or farther. She should have set up a few steps ub to increase the percentage.

Three, having Sconiers, Tomacova and K. Bello out there on the wing allowed the Badger trapping and pressure D to work. There were a number of times the Gophs guards simply would not throw them the ball when they were open. Those 3 simply aren't capable of making something good happen when they get the ball away from the basket.

Overall though, glad to get a road win on a night when with only one point guard and our best rebounder was in foul trouble. Really, really love the energy Masha brings and am excited for the future of Powell and Scalia.

Badgers women's basketball team turned back by Minnesota

“Plain and simple, at halftime I’d write a check to everybody that came to the game,” said UW coach Jonathan Tsipis, whose team trailed by 24 points at the break.

Coach Jonathan Tsipis, who normally can find a ray of sunshine on the cloudiest day, didn’t even look for one in his team’s first-half performance.

“Plain and simple, at halftime I’d write a check to everybody that came to the game,” Tsipis said. “They shouldn’t have had to pay to come watch that first half. That’s unacceptable.

“The one thing you can control is your effort and the second is your attitude. I didn’t think we did a very good job in the first half, myself being the first and foremost. First half we weren’t ready to play. I’ve got to do a better job getting our team ready.”

Sophomore Imani Lewis disagreed with part of her coach’s assessment.
“Something a coach should never do is coach attitude and effort,” Lewis said. “Me included, the whole team had attitudes. Nobody was listening, we just gave up. Coach puts that on his fault, but I put it on our fault. A coach shouldn’t have to coach attitude.

I'm guessing she's played too many minutes and in too many games. Cummings will be redshirted and I'm sure they will limit the number of redshirts given the number of players coming in next yea.
 

Really ugly 2nd half, but you can't discount a road win in the Big 10. Great energy to start the game and loved seeing our Freshmen continue to up their game. Great minutes by Masha for the 2nd straight game. Came up huge against Rutgers last weekend and really gave good minutes last night. BIG game coming up. Really need to play with the intensity they had in the first half and stay out of foul trouble.

That means she’s probably not getting the defensive attention at the level of other players. Jasmine Powell was able to make use of this as two Wisconsin defenders doubled up on Hubbard on this inbounds play, leaving Kehinde alone under the basket.

Yes, that play drew quite a chuckle as we watched it happen. It is exactly what happened, but seeing how she missed almost every other longer shot, can't blame WI. But leaving a player open under the basket can't be a good strategy against any player....

Finally a great inbounds play. Masha runs from left wing to right corner, attracting attention. Diva with a great screen on Kehinde’s defender so she can head straight to the hoop. Masha’s defender too far out to help.

Great observation that defenders might ignore Kehinde, and hopefully we can exploit that some more. But strictly speaking, this is not really an “ignoring” here. Diva and Kehinde just beat their defenders, plain and simple.

On the other hand, it’s kinda an “ignoring” in the sense that Wisconsin would expect Kehinde to set a screen for Diva, not the other way around.

Somewhat similar to the Rutgers game, Wisconsin beat us in most of the statistics. They won the statistics battle for assists, field-goal percentage, turnovers, steals, blocks and personal fouls.

How then did we manage to beat the Badgers?

Mainly (and similar to Rutgers) by winning the rebound battle by +10 rebounds.

We also won the three-point field-goal percentage and free-throw percentage battles. Although free throws were about a wash (they had one more make due to 3 more attempts), the former was a big help since we shot twice as many triples than they did.

Summary: We won due to lots of three-pointer attempts shooting at a .385 clip, and by out-rebounding Wisconsin.
