B1G Game 11: Gophers visit UCLA (2-2-25)

Meh, there’s multiple people missing assignments and they don’t get pulled. I know I’m hard on Heyer but she is not providing any offense. Down ten cause we can’t score.
Heyer is definitely providing offense. She sets screens. She moves without the ball. She enables other people to take shots. Maybe she’s missing her own, but she’s definitely providing offense as well as defense.

We can agree to disagree.

Unfortunately her shot has been off unlike @ USC. Now all our players are wearing down and UCLA is a DEEP TEAM.

They’re putting the clamps on Battle. They need somebody to get open.

I wasn’t expecting us the go on the road to beat the top team; more frustrated seeing all these other programs getting top 25 wins when we haven’t seen one in 6 years.

Disappointing to see our offense struggle and not see Johnson at all. Not sure WHY.

Just saying that any of us who were not at yesterdays practice and the morning shoot-around, probably don't know much about the defensive game plan, specific defensive assignments and specific rotations when this or that happens.

Yes, everybody misses defensive assignments, but the people who play at this level, or for coach Dawn, have obviously proven in practice that they know and are instinctive about those defensive assignments, as opposed to somebody who "may" still be slow or messing up those assignments often enough that coach doesn't trust them to mentally execute in a game. Man, I see multiple examples of this every college football, hoops and baseball season.

Of course, you can still do the right thing and the player across from you is just better and has an answer.

UCLA is a very big team, not just height, but also muscle mass. They are strong, they are confident, and they have a lot of future WNBA draft (and lottery) picks on their roster. We are hanging in this game, when nobody expected us to, despite being without one of our best players. I think we’re OK.

UCLA has so much height length and speed. Gophers lack depth. They UCLA have elite talent. They wore the Gophers down. Now it's just a beat down. Johnson looks lost on defense. They have 9 high school AA on their roster. All the missed layups and shots after wearing down are result of lacking depth. UCLA looks to be a contender to win it all. UCLA after USC was always gonna be a tough match-up.

Other than the last couple minutes, this has been a very enjoyable game to watch. I like the heart and hustle the Gophers are showing. We just needed a few more of our buckets to fall, and a few more stops to stay in the hunt for the victory.

At what point does beating a top 25 team become mental? Again so many missed shots around the rim-does it get into their heads? Their offense never seems to flow. Iowa probably moves back into the top 25 after beating USC. Do we just assume it’s another loss? It’s becoming frustrating

Such a drop-off from McKinney to Johnson. We miss Mara and Taylor.
McKinney has struggled lately too and getting into foul trouble. Somehow coach needs to work on getting her shooters open for shots. We rely way to much on 4 others standing around and waiting for a 1 on 1 drive.

If this offense was rolling, GG, Stewart, Johnson would be having 4-7 good looking 3 point shots each game. UCLA had 32 attempts from the arc and shot 40%. USC had 27 attempts and shot 40%

You can only rely on defense so much vs top teams that can just flat our score.

Let's fill the barn for Thursday vs Iowa!

Part of it is talent. Currently this team does not have the offense to beat top teams. Some how we have to land players that can create a shot

Iowa ranked or not will be extremely tough as they have multiple shooters.

For older fans, now. Been around 21 year old college players for 35 years or so. It never gets mental to them. They have no concept or real concern for what happened before they arrived. They move on faster and better than any of us can believe. At that age, tomorrow is a another day where something great might happen.

We were really good with Woodson McKinney and Stewart off the bench. Our reduced depth has an effect on us in Q4.

The Gophers hustle, play hard the whole game, and are good defensively. To take the next step, however, the recruiting will have to go to another level. More shooters, athletes, and size are needed.

I assume the Gophers need Braun to have a hot-shooting game with everybody else to have enough firepower to outscore a top-ranked team.

In good news, at least as long as the Gophers win at Purdue, this could be the first season in maybe forever they have gone without a bad loss.

This team will prove a lot if they can beat Iowa and Indiana. Two losses and team could spiral. Won’t be easy but interested to see how they respond.

At least this team won't be left out of the BIG10 Tournament at the end of the year. Bottom 3 out and there is a five way race for that at the moment.
