Go Gophers!!

Where is that stupid little Iowa troll who insists it is not possible for a Big 10 team to be selected for Music City?

per CollegeFootballNews:

San Francisco Bowl
Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, CA
Tuesday, Dec. 30, 10:00 ET ESPN
Big Ten No. 7 vs. Pac-12 No. 4
Prediction: Minnesota vs. Stanford

It has been observed before, but isn't it just a tad unbalanced to have the 7th place Big Ten team scheduled against the 4th place Pac-12 team?

Pinstripe Bowl

As I said when this "affiliation" was announced, there is nothing than I would like less (and most Gophers fans I suspect) than to go to an outdoor football game in NYC in December. Just. Plain. Yuck. Cross this one off the list if this is where they land.

In all seriousness I see us in one of the top 4 bowls listed. Not 7, not 5, top 4. No lower than Outback. Get ready to travel!

B1G bowl projections: Week 6 (TaxSlayer/Franklin American Mortgage Music City...

Based on the dumb way that bowl selections take place, isn't it possible that we could play in the B1G championship game and get selected for the Holiday or music city bowl? Or is there something that prevents such a robbery?

It used to be that the loser of the B1G title game could not go to a bowl lower than fourth pick, by B1G rule (in this case, Holiday). Not sure how that has changed with the playoff, but I imagine it's still in place.

If we go to Music City, it will be a bit disappointing for the rank of the bowl, but Nashville is by far the best place to go of many of the host cities. Unrealy how fun that town is.

I don't know, I've wanted to spend the holidays in NYC for quite some time, mostly due to Home Alone 2.

My folks just bought a house in FLA so if it's Tax Slayer bowl...i'll definitely be in attendance!

The Gator Bowl wants nothing to do with non-helmet schools from the Big Ten - they were forced to take Northwestern two years ago because both the Big Ten and SEC offices protected their title game losers (Nebraska and Georgia) by getting those teams into the Cap One Bowl, and the Outback Bowl took Michigan. Just look at the comments from the game's president when it was announced Penn State would be eligible: "Obviously clearing a program such as Penn State for post-season play deepens our pool of teams," Catlett said. "If you look at the Big Ten teams that are most attractive to bowls -- Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Nebraska -- we're going to get one of them if we go with a Big Ten team."

And if they don't get one of those, they'll choose an ACC team this year and wait until next year to get a "better" Big Ten team. Remember last December, when it became apparent the BWW Bowl was going to take Michigan, leaving the Gator to choose between us and Nebraska, who we had beaten? It was never a contest.

It would take some major strong-arming by the Big Ten office to get Minnesota to Jacksonville.

I deeply deeply apologize if this has been hashed and rehashed on other threads, but could someone give a quick rundown of the whole TaxSlayer Bowl-Music City Bowl deal works?

I get that they are both SEC vs. ACC/Big Ten and that when ACC is in Jacksonville, B1G is in Nashville, and vice-versa. Is it just that they take turns picking first from among the collective ACC/B1G pool? Since I'm dumb, I can't figure it out. And since I am in a position, geographically, to go to either game, I'd really like to understand this.

Exactly. It does not appear there is any set order to which years the Big Ten plays in Jacksonville or Nashville - only that they will appear three times in each over the next six seasons. So it won't necessarily alternate.

The Gator Bowl has had a deal like this in the past. From 2006-09, they partnered with the Sun Bowl to share picks between the Big 12 and Big East (RIP). The Big 12 appeared in Jacksonville in the 2007 and 2008 seasons (Texas Tech and Nebraska), while the Big East had 2006 and 2009 (both times West Virginia).

Okay, thanks Mr Spingleton. So based on what you said earlier, TaxGatorSlayer picks first this year, I assume?

Assuming I'm not wrong and the guy that vehemently opposed me on the previous bowl thread is, here's how it works:

- The TaxSlayer and Music City bowls share selections with the ACC and B1G.
- Each bowl must select a B1G team exactly three times in the next six years, and must select an ACC team exactly three times in the next six years. TaxSlayer could decide to select a B1G team for the next three years ... but would have to select an ACC team the next three. Or, it could alternate.
- The TaxSlayer and Music City are "middle tier" bowls - meaning they and the other middle-tier bowls (San Francisco, Pinstripe) - will share selections from the middle tier of teams. For more on the tiered system, see http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/78767/b1g-to-adopt-tiered-bowl-selection-process. Also, this helps explain it a bit:

Let's say Penn State finishes with somewhere between a 6-6 and 8-4 record and so does Rutgers. Both are candidates for some of the middle to lesser bowls on the slate, including the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium in New York and the bowl at the new Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

Under some older Big Ten systems, the Bay Area bowl might have snapped up Penn State before New York could get to it. Now, the Big Ten can step in and say: Look, Rutgers just went to the Pinstripe Bowl last December (where it lost to Notre Dame). The RU fans are pretty excited to go somewhere fresh and are jacked up to follow their team. Let's give them a California trip. Meanwhile, 10,000 Penn State fans already took a pretty expensive trip to Ireland that they thought probably would be their de facto bowl trip for the year. Many of them with the means to take a long trip probably didn't budget for another expensive plane ride and hotel stay. New York City loves Penn State. All the alums up and down the I-95 corridor can drive or take the train. Let's give NYC the Lions.

So basically, there's still an "order," and probably this year more than others that order will matter, but moving forward, things won't necessarily be picked one by one.

I don't know if either game really gets to "choose" anymore. The Big Ten office has said it will assign teams to bowls, but I'm sure there will be a little give-and-take. My guess is the league will tell the bowls "here's the teams we have slotted for your games" and the bowls will work together to come up with the most desirable match-ups.

For example, the Music City Bowl probably wants a regional team to put butts in the seats, which could come on the SEC side from Kentucky, or on the ACC side from Louisville. They can mix and match with the Gator Bowl to get a game like Kentucky vs. Minnesota while leaving something like Louisville vs. Texas A&M for Jacksonville.

I see. Thanks, fellas. I guess, as always, we just have to wait until selection day to know anything.

Pretty much. At least there's the promise of avoiding the dreaded two trips in three years or worse, back to back trips, that we've become so accustomed to.

Oh I know, but at some point they're going to have to accept us if we have the record and head to head wins. They won't be able to ignore us
forever.....Citrus bowl and Outback bowl would work too... actually, they'll be living near Kissimmee so Citrus would be ideal, and now that
I think about it, driving to crime riddled JAX seems less and less pleasurable..

Go Gophers!!

Hadn't thought about it before but now that I live in Florida I may actually be able to go to the bowl game if it's in the Sunshine State (work and money permitting). Haven't seen the team live since 2012 and haven't been to a game as a fan since 2011 so that would be awesome.
