B10 Issues Public Reprimand of Ohio State (Marcus Hall & Coaching Staff) & Bo Pelini

Sorry if this has been posted, was offline for the past few hours and didn't see it with a quick search. Here are the press releases from the Big 10:

Big Ten Conference Issues Public Reprimand of

Ohio State Football Student-Athlete Marcus Hall and Coaching Staff

Rosemont, Ill. – The Big Ten office today issued a public reprimand of Ohio State football student-athlete Marcus Hall for his actions while exiting the playing field during the Michigan game on Nov. 30, which violated the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy. Big Ten Conference Agreement 10.01 states in part that “The Big Ten Conference expects all contests involving a member institution to be conducted without compromise to any fundamental element of sportsmanship… [including] integrity of the competition, civility toward all, and respect, particularly toward opponents and officials. The conference office also issued a public reprimand of the Ohio State football coaching staff for failing in its duty to effectively manage the process of escorting an ejected student-athlete from the playing field to the locker room.

Additionally, the Conference reviewed video of the incident that took place during the second quarter of the game and has concluded that the officials managed the situation properly and ejected the correct players for their actions. NCAA football playing rules provide that these players were to be disqualified for the remainder of the game since their ejections for fighting occurred during the first half of the contest. The officials and coaching staffs from both institutions did a good job of containing the situation once it started. As bad as it was, we’re fortunate the incident did not escalate any further. More can, and should, be done by both coaching staffs in the future to prevent similar incidents from detracting from this rivalry.

The Big Ten Conference considers this matter concluded and will have no further comment.

Big Ten Issues Public Reprimand of

Nebraska Football Head Coach Bo Pelini and Announces Institutional Fine

Rosemont, Ill. – The Big Ten office today issued a public reprimand of Nebraska football head coach Bo Pelini for violating the Big Ten Sportsmanship Policy following Nebraska’s game against Iowa on Nov. 29, 2013. In addition, the conference announced that the institution has been fined $10,000 as a result of the violation.

The Big Ten determined that Pelini’s postgame comments regarding officials were in violation of Big Ten Conference Agreement 10.01, which states in part that “The Big Ten Conference expects all contests involving a member institution to be conducted without compromise to any fundamental element of sportsmanship. Such fundamental elements include integrity of competition, civility toward all, and respect, particularly toward opponents and officials.” Coaches are teachers as well, and there is an expectation that they set the example for student-athletes and others in areas of sportslike conduct.

“The University of Nebraska embraces and supports the Big Ten Conference’s Sportsmanship Policy,” said Nebraska Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst. “In that regard, we were disappointed with Coach Pelini’s actions this past Friday regarding game officials. We immediately recognized and addressed the situation with Coach Pelini and the Big Ten Conference. In addition, Coach Pelini acknowledged and accepted responsibility for the inappropriateness of his actions and issued a public apology in advance of this reprimand.”

The Big Ten Conference considers this matter concluded and will have no further comment.

Does this mean they won't be suspending any OSU players?

Sounds that way. Looks like the B1G has finally completed its metamorphosis into the United Nations.

Then big deal. What's the point? All it does in this age is give the programs more free publicity with which to attract the next generation of thugs looking for a place to play.

If they keep this behavior up, Braxton Miller might get suspended for the first four minutes of the opening game next year.

He's already been suspended for half the season - all of the defensive possessions.

B1G stepping it up. Not only did they shake their finger at OSU, they did it publicly. I am worried that such heavy handed discipline by the conference violates the Constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment.

Well, at least there's future clarity for all Big Ten players. ...

Throw punches and/or flip the bird to fans and all you should get from the conference offices is a public reprimand. I would expect this low behavioral bar to be tested by some Big Ten players next season.

The folks in Columbus must be truly appalled at the severity of these "punishments"...

Agreed, this is horsesh!t. I imagine the MSU fans are pretty pissed between this ruling and the way the Big Ten has been screwing them over the last few years.

And Ohio State will choose to kick to start the game.

I imagine they could level the lack of sportsmanship charge against Pelini about any time, but I hope no one is going to criticize him for telling the guy who stuck the mike in his face on the way to locker room at half-time that he'd asked a stupid question. That was just about the dumbest thing ever uttered by a reporter that I've ever witnessed.

You are correct. They lost their stud DE Gholston against UW in 2011 for the regular season game for...wait for it,

...throwing a punch
...in an on field altercation
...against Michigan.

But there must have been totally different circumstances!!
