Austin Booker to enter transfer portal

man. i mean its todays world....but its just so dang hard to assemble a roster with so much movement. wish him well. you would think with where we are at along the DLine that snaps would have been available to him next season.

I really wanted this kid to stay. I think he’s going to be a good one. Do we have to rotate these guys more so that they get some playing time and not leave? I think not shifting in a 1 year guy and giving him playing time vs a young guy like this would make sense. Going to have to change strategies I think.

This is why we need to step up in the NIL world! Guys can have a lot of reasons to transfer and I wish him the best. That being said, NIL could have been a factor.

Missing mom too. Let's see where he ends up.

Ugh, I had high hopes for him.

shoot. I know Ryan Burns was really high on Booker's potential earlier this year before the injury.

Gophers need pass rushers in the worst way.
Yup, this one stings. It's now in my top 3 painful transfers:
  1. Bucky Irving
  2. MJ Anderson
  3. Austin Booker
Wonder if he's going closer to home for Purdue or IU? I guess an NIL offer elsewhere is a possibility based on his HS film, but he's not done much here yet. I was confident that would change next year, but I could be wrong.

The other transfers haven't bothered me much, but this one is a little frustrating.
The free transfer is a very good thing for players. With 85 scholarship players a lot of them will look for better opportunities for playing time.

They know better than we do and what their prospects look like for next year. This move, like Curtis Dunlap's transfer, means we have better players ahead of him.

Sounds like the Gophers knew this was likely coming. They made a conscious decision to play Finnessy at rDE when they had an opportunity to give those snaps to Booker. The staff is excited to return 7 of their 8 starters on the DL from this year and add Smith, Schuster, Eastern and Schwarz to the mix.

PS. MJ Anderson can sting you all day, but if a guy continually can't pass his piss tests and that's a standard rule the players understand going into the program, coach isn't going to make an exception. MJ made his own bed - just like Tank Brown and Rashad Cheney.

I see MJ is leaving Iowa State for the NFL. Can’t believe that any NFL team wouldn’t research him before signing him.

A. He declared for the draft. You think that guarantees he is making an NFL team?

B. The NFL has taken plenty of guys who enjoy illicit substances or have done much worse in college. What do NFL decisions have to do with the standard that PJ has set from the start for our program?

C. A guy could also grow up and start making better decisions when he has potential millions on the line. That doesn't change the past though.

Will Booker head back home and play for Indiana and the DL coach who recruited him?

Lol the nfl don’t give a shit what you’ve done. If he can play the nfl will have him.

Injuries can change the trajectory of a once-promising career. Another player can jump ahead of the depth chart.

David Cobb over Donnell Kirkland and Tanner Morgan over Zach Annexstad are two examples.

There are also career-ending injuries.

I wish Austin the very best.

Typically guys don’t have a ton of options if they haven’t seen the field. I wouldn’t expect Booker to have a long list of P5 suitors like he did in high school.

I would agree if he was an upperclassmen, but he's only a RS FR and needed to fill out.

Not being sarcastic, but how does this work? Have there been that many injuries that 8 guys have all started this year? Or is this saying that the 2 deep rotation are all starters?

I think saying that 8 guys played regular snaps.

He’s not any younger than Joyner and Striggow. I just can’t see P5 schools flocking to sign the third stringer from the gophers. Guess we’ll see.

He's a year younger than both, and Joyner played about as much last season as Booker did this season. Striggow was mainly a special teamer last season.

My bad. He’s still 2 years away from when every team was looking at him. Unless a player produces in college they’ll basically always have a smaller offer list than when they came out of high school.

Remember that the guys that red-shirted last year and this year, do not get the extra 2020 COVID season. Gotta think that Schwartz and Smith will be the guys in the rotation with Becker, Striggow, and Joyner.

I have a hard time believing that a reserve player with 6 career games played left thinking he's going to get NIL money elsewhere.

Man, this is lame.

Unless there was funny business, abusive coaching, something off the field, etc. .... shouldn't guys who sign out of high school have to give it at least 3 years??

Did you really think you were going to be/supposed to be the starter in year 2?? Dude, come on
