Is the reason our attendance is low compared to many of the other B10 schools ie Iowa and Nebraska. is because of the
many pro teams here. This seems to be the main excuse but sometimes i wonder if there isn't other (important) reasons also.
Yes Iowa right now is doing well on the field but their attendance has always been better than ours. Iowa does have a div 1 state college
to contend with and their staate population is much smaller than Minnesota.

The quality of the team (wins and losses) does have a bearing on attendance: ie purdue and Ill.

Competition sure plays a part, this is not a one horse town, there's lots of alternate sports entertainment or just entertainment.

But sucking most of the time from the late 60s on probably is the bigger deal....

Iowa saw a huge drop in attendance last year until they realized it would be a good season. So it happens everywhere.

There are a lot of college football fans in Minnesota, and I'm certain that they would gravitate to the Gophers if the U could make a habit of winning.

I'd attend more games if controversial calls were replayed on that big, beautiful, expensive Jumbotron. Controversial calls are my favorites!

As has been stated many times before, teams like Iowa and Wisconsin are the #1 attractions in their cities. They own the market and the entire city is focused on game day. The Gophers are one attraction among many in a large metropolitan area, and certainly do not own the market - not even close.

Still, it would be nice to see the Gophers be enough of a draw to fill a 50,000 seat stadium. But, this is a very finicky market.

Let's look at the current status. and live in the here and now. If they want crowds of at least 40,000 for the next two games they should continue to let freshmen in FREE!.

Correct, freshmen should be in for free and I would imagine it would be fairly easy to get a sponsor to pick up the revenue. Homecoming should be free for all students.

If you're looking to fill up the stadium, and it is getting close to game day, sell heavily discounted tickets to season ticket holders.

And the freshman thing also.

True, but the population of the 3 stated areas should at least be mentioned if this is your argument.

Would that do anything?

If I can't get the seats next to my seats I already have ... not gonna Hey anyone want to come to a game with me and go sit away from me?!?!?!?

Can't believe this thread got to 2 pages...

On the other hand you can call your buddy and say; "Would you and your spouse, or child, like to go to the Gopher game on Saturday, I can get you tickets real cheap", (or my treat). Might not sit together but we can get together before and after. Or the kids, or spouses, can sit together.....and us drinkers can sit together.:drink:

Maybe create new fans, and more importantly, the STH gets something other folks don't.

WI has the Packers, Brewers and the Bucks in professional sports and they all particularly the Packers draw a statewide audience.
The WI stadium holds around 80,000 and the fans come from all over the state not just from Madison.
People in MN have not embraced the Gophers for decades.

Silliest suggestion I've heard in a while.

Yeah but everyone can get tickets real cheap these days...

I think the date of the most recent Big Ten title in all three cities is also relevant.

Stop s@#k&#g and they will come. Attendance will improve if we get into the habit of winning a B1G title in this century.

Hold on. Did you self-censor the work "sucking"?

Minnesotans support a broad variety of entertainment including the best arts in the midwest. Sports are just another choice of entertainment. The Gophers have established half a century of mediocrity at best. You can't blame people for choosing other interests.
If the Gophers become consistent at winning 10 games per season, you will see a full house. We'll see if that ever happens, however.

I won't lie, the quality of the show at the games feels like it continues to drop. Commercial breaks seem more common and longer (probably haven't changed but d@mn that guy with the red hat, I hate him). They didn't show any replays on the big screen during the first game. The announcer was announcing the wrong names. The beer is expensive. Old people get mad when you stand and cheer. About the only thing that is worth going to the live game is watching the dance team. Their performance hasn't dropped.

Almost everything else would be better while sitting at home or at a bar. Not sure how much longer I'll keep season tickets. The price not increasing may help but the need to improve the product (and I'm not talking about the team wins).
