Atlanta Journal on GaTech/Tubby: "I’m not sure you start over with a 60-year-old"

From the article

"I believe Georgia Tech will be in the market for a basketball coach within the month. I do not know this for a fact, but I work today on that assumption. But before I offer a half-dozen (or so) candidates I’d consider to replace Paul Hewitt, I should explain why some major names aren’t on the list.

Tubby Smith isn’t on the list because the Tubby’s-coming-back-to-Georgia-to-coach-somebody rumor has become such an annual occurrence as to be discounted. (Didn’t take the Hawks job back in 2004, did he? Didn’t return to UGA in 2009, did he?) And Tubby Smith — who is, I should stipulate, among my all-time favorites as both a man and a coach — will turn 60 in June. I’m not sure you start over with a 60-year-old."

Go Gophers!!

Thats exactly what I think every time Tubby is mentioned to another school. Nice article Bleed.

Valid points. Tubby's a bit old for a program like GT who can still attract almost anyone they want. Someone like NC State is more apt to look past it. Also, GT probably can't afford Tubby if Hewitt's buyout is really as big as is rumored.

One glaring ommission on the list: Tim Miles at Colorado State. He's certainly in my top 5 if Tubby leaves.

I tend to agree with the writer. If Tubby goes, I don't think it'll be for another building job. Perhaps he'd go if it's a program that's ready-made for success and the AD wants a proven older coach. It would have to be a currently successful program that loses its coach to one of the brand-name programs, a dominos-falling type of situation.

But I agree with Howeda, if Tubby goes Tim Miles has gotta' be on the Gophers' short list. At least with Miles' midwestern roots, there's a chance Minnesota (if he's successful) would be a destination job and not a detour. Not for sure, but possible.

Yeah, and let alone the fact that the last two years have probably aged him to 70 lol

I'd go after Anderson or Turgeon if Ga Tech job opens up.

He has been in my top 5 for a long time. I saw what he did at SMSU first hand and am sold on him being able to do a good job pretty much anywhere.

Myron has been beating the Tubby to GATech drum for a long time. Hopefully this shuts him up.

Would you pay $2mm per year to a 60-year-old coach for a rebuilding job? It's a gamble. I'd need to know that he's committed to turning a program around for at least 5 years.

On the flip side, does a 60-year-old coach want to move and start over again after having done it so many times already? In order to move on, the money would have to be a significant raise and the program would need to be ready to win now.

No to both ?

I'm gonna stick up for Myron here, he's not the only one saying that. I think if that job had opened up last year and GT expressed interest, we would have a new coach. Out of all the jobs tubby has been linked to the past three years, GT is the only one I have ever thought was a legitimate threat. I still think he would strongly consider it this year but the wildcard is whether they would be interested in him.

I always felt this way about Maryland. But GT is very similar. ACC job in a big city. I guess we hope they don't want a 60-year-old at this point, or more realistically, that they can't afford him. I also think the odds he takes the leap go down a good % with each year that passes.

Haha, Tubby must not sign your checks.

The ACC will always be dominated by UNC and Duke. Maryland and Ga Tech have tough road to knock heads with those 2.

True. But those two jobs are head and shoulders above the UVa and NC State jobs, etc. in the ACC. They have both been to National Championship games in the last decade.
