Athlon: 6 Coaching Candidates to Replace Tracy Claeys at Minnesota

Unless you understand that Klieman was the defensive architect under Bohl, and the key X&O's guys. When your coach leaves with most of the assistants and there is zero dropoff, that says a lot about Klieman and his role and relationship with the players before coming the HC.

Still at a lower level in a program with all the momentum in the world....

Dude has done well, he's a prospect, but need more to see what he can do outside being setup on a tee to succeed. Gophers are not in that spot.

NDSU may be FCS but their program is probably no different than a MAC job in reality. Not much difference between NDSU and Western Michigan imo.

They do very well. THEY might be a MAC level team, let's just assume that, the teams the play on a regular basis are not MAC teams. That changes the math a bit.

Are there any under the radar guys that aren't the usual names being thrown out?

Any coordinators perhaps? Brent Venables? Aranda? Could someone like a Pat Narduzzi possibly be lured away for the right amount of money?

More just throwing this out for discussion....

Why is it that everytime we are looking for a head coach we inevitably get to the current HC at NDSU as an option. I have no opinion on his skills or abilities, but NDSU is not a feeder school for coaching talent to the Big Ten. They feed the MAC, MVC and Sun Belt. We either need to hire a top FCS Head Coach or a Top FBS Coordinator with HC experience or we can consider this another failure.

There is no good reason the Gophers can't at least be a middle of the pack Big Ten team in terms of recruiting. Recruiting was never a strong point for Kill and there's little reason to think Claeys was going to be better.

And yet they were able to get wins. Focus on the results.

True but when NDSU plays FBS schools they seem to ALWAYS win. Their talent level really isn't that different most G5 schools.

So you basically have to treat Klieman like you would be taking him from a job similar to Fleck. That makes a difference. Outside of this year, generally NDSU is better than Western Michigan as well.
