Athan's dad comments on Fleck's press conference - by Andy Greder

Below are the offensive yards per game and points per game from the last few years:
  • Ciarrocca’s 2024 AK-led offense: 382.7 ypg, 28.9 ppg
  • Harbaugh’s 2023 AK-led offense: 300.9 ypg, 20.9 ppg
  • Harbaugh’s 2024 Brosmer-led offense: 337.8 ypg, 26.2 ppg
In his first year with AK, and with AK still showing the same issues as he did with us, Ciarrocca’s offense averaged 82 more yards and 8 more points per game. That is a huge difference.

Last year, our offense was led by a now NFL QB that many say is the best QB the Gophers have had in decades. Even with that advantage, Ciarrocca’s AK-led offense averaged 45 more yards and 3 more points per game. That is marginal but keep in mind that Brosmer is supposed to be much better than AK, and we lost three games by 3 points or less last year. If we could have squeezed those extra yards and points out of our offense last year, we likely finish 9-3 in the regular season.
Not sure if this helps or hurts your point, but Kyle Monangai accounted for 116.3 of those yards (rushing) per game in 2024 for Rutgers. DT gave us 80.5 (again, rushing). The teams were far closer.

Not to mention we ran 64 plays per game to Rutgers 72. Some of that is pace of play and some is efficiency, but yes you’re also going to average more yards and points if you play not at the snails pace pj operates us at

As a few have pointed out there are a lot of reasons why just looking at stats like this doesn't really tell you much. Doesn't factor in running backs, doesn't factor in opponents, game situations so many other factors that go into yard and point totals.

AK fits better with Ciarrocca and Rutgers then he did here but he still leaves a lot to be desired overall. Gophers were better off last year with Brosmer. Looking to Saturday, AK is probably the better overall QB right now due to experience but Drake has a much higher upside.

Rutgers ran about 8 more plays a game than MN last year. Their defense was bad. In addition, they had a much better running game than the Gophers last year.

The flaw in you argument is that the only 2 variables are qb and oc.

Those stats don't tell the whole story though. Rutgers was also a significantly better running team, led by Kyle Monangai, who's now in the NFL, while Darius Taylor continues to be in and out with injuries.

Ciarrocca was also at Rutgers in 2023, so you can't just disregard that. Overall ranks for the last two seasons were:

Yards per game
2023 Rutgers: 123
2023 Minnesota: 125
2024 Rutgers: 71
2024 Minnesota: 107

Points per game
2023 Rutgers: 100
2023 Minnesota: 111
2024 Rutgers: 57
2024 Minnesota: 80

Rutgers also had the easiest schedule in the B1G last year, which makes a difference.

Are those big enough differences to earn Ciarrocca nearly triple the salary of Harbaugh? I don't think so.

Wasn't the same schedule though.

He wasn't "yakking to the press" - he wrote something on twitter. Then someone from the press saw it and decided to write about it in a story.
My points stand. Who gives a crap about what Mr. Kaliamakis has to say and I hate when parents start spouting off about stuff related to their kid. If it went on Twitter/X, he knew someone was going to pick it up.

Free speech and all, but it's effin' annoying.

Maybe? I wouldn't have expected a "journalist" to generate an article mentioning it, nevertheless putting the parent's name in the title of the article. And it's a stretch for Greder to even call it a swipe.

Pathetic journalism if you ask me.

I really have to disagree. If you put something on X/Twitter, it's like you are havig a press conference. Maybe a little press conference, but a alert to the press nonetheless. If may be shoddy journalism on Greder's part, but one would think that Kaliakmanis the Elder would realize in a paraphrase of the old saw: Make sure brain is in gear before engaging fingers.

Journalist always looking for a story, particularly a negative one that people seem to grab on to.
