As Program Depth Continues to Improve, Freshman Still Likely to Contribute to Gophers

Last season, a number of Gophers freshman contributed especially as the season progressed including Mitch Leidner, Maxx Williams, Drew Wolitarsky and Donovahn Jones. This year looks to be more of the same. Here are some freshmen that could make an immediate impact this season for the Gophers.

Berkley Edwards (Redshirt Freshman): While the Gophers running back core is indeed loaded, the explosive Edwards should see time at the position, and elsewhere throughout the field. Edwards has been taking plays at wide receiver and punt/kick returner in practice and during Saturday’s scrimmage.

“He’s a huge weapon, he’s really fast, and it’s tough for guys to try and cover him when he’s going out for a pass route,” said Mitch Leidner. Expect to see a good amount of screen passes thrown his way. Cobb also said that the key for Berkley this season is gaining confidence in the passing game, and fully learning it. “Once he gets better at that, he’ll be all over the field.”

Ryan Santoso/Andrew Harte (Redshirt Freshmen): There hasn’t been a clear leader in the kicking competition so far as both players have kicked well. Obviously one or both of these players will make significant contributions in the kicking game with Chris Hawthorne’s graduation. Kill hinted that the field goal kickers may be situational. Don’t be surprised to see Santoso trying long kicks this year, with Harte attempting the shorter tries.

Craig James (True Freshman): James has been playing well in practice and seems to be making a name for himself. While the coaches would like to give James a redshirt year, his skills as a returner may allow James to get some game time this year.

Steven Richardson (True Freshman): Here is the one true freshman who’s fate is not at all in doubt. Coach Jerry Kill has already said that Richardson is definitely going to play this season. Physically, Richardson seems ready to play and make an impact. “He’s an unmovable object, and you’re never gonna get leverage on him,” said Coach Kill. Defensive Line coach Jeff Phelps stated that Richardson really solidified himself in Saturday’s scrimmage, and from all accounts it seems as though Richardson will be a part of the defensive line rotation.

Chris Streveler (Redshirt Freshman): While Streveler seems a long way from being a polished quarterback, and isn’t close to the level Leidner is at, he looks like he’ll be the number two quarterback on the depth chart when the season begins. If Leidner gets injured, Streveler will have to come in and make an impact. He has been able to compete against the Gopher’s tenacious secondary, which should speed up his growth process quite a bit.Streveler could also get some snaps if the Gophers can pull away with a big lead early in the non-conference schedule.

Damarius Peppers (Redshirt Freshman): Often seen on the second team, during scrimmages and other drills from practice. Expect him to get some playing time this year.

Nick Hart (Redshirt Freshmen): Fellow Tight End Maxx Williams has stated the improvements of Hart over the offseason, and Hart has played relatively often with the second teams. With the unfortunate injury to Duke Anyanwu cutting down the tight end depth, expect Hart to get some experience with the offense or special teams.

Eric Carter (Redshirt Freshman): With a wide receiving core that is still relatively weak, expect Carter to get at least some time as a receiver.

Isaiah Gentry/Melvin Holland Jr (Both True Freshmen): Ideally, the coaches would like to see these two players redshirt. However, injuries, a lack of improvement from other wide receivers, or their supreme talent may lead to one or both of them having to take the field this season.

I don't know if he's going to make an impact this season. While he has been impressive in practice and the scrimmage, it seems as though streveler has the backup spot locked up. It would probably take Leidner getting hurt AND streveler going down or playing poorly for perra to get game time.

Alex you have been a great addition to the Gopherhole and I really enjoy your assessments and articles. You are very detailed and base everything on observations or facts leaving little room for the typical gopherhole banter.
Keep up the great work and you might reach the DL ring of fame.

Of course, we say this over and over and then something happens, but...

Perra won't see the field unless both Leidner and Streveler get hurt and cannot even hand off the ball. Assume worst case scenario. Could happen, but Rhoda or even D. Jones might play before Perra does in 2014.

I would rather see them play because they have supreme talent and are better than other wide receivers. I would have to think one or both are either in the two deep or showing they can get open and catch the ball. Emphasis on catch the ball.

I think it may be like Jones last season, they'll play more as the season goes on and they understand their roles better.

MHjr plays. I don't see RS as an option there either.

I hope he plays. Would love to see Holland Jr. play this year. He looks too good to redshirt!

If anyone needs a reminder why I love Holland Jr. so much. Here it is:

Good read, thanks for the breakdown on these guys.

A note for improvement on the article though. There are some misspellings/incorrect word use such as freshman instead of freshmen and who's instead of whose.

I don't typically call out posters for these things but when you are writing articles for the site you should have someone proof for these things unless you're very good at not making those mistakes.

Ya, mistakes like that ruin my day to.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll be more careful with my proof reading next time for sure.

Thanks for putting that together.

I'm assuming Botticelli and Ekpe will start in the interior, anyone know who is expected to take the other two spots in the rotation? Legania, Timms, Peppers, and Richardson could all be in the mix.

Ya know, it is not like getting a girl pregnant on the first date...

Few quick thoughts. . .

First, good article! Thanks for contributing to Gopherhole.

Second, just some random thoughts on some players:
-Barring an injury, it's really unlikely that Holland RS.
-If we are including RS FR, Daletavious McGhee will play quite a bit. He has been impressive and he will see time on special teams and defense.
-He just switched, but Kill said that Elmore is not going to RS. I'd guess he plays on more run orientated plays this season, but I am purely guessing when it comes to Elmore at DE.
-I think there is a better chance DRM burns his RS than Perra.
-Wozniak, Laster, Dixon should all see some PT this season as well. Wozniak is a project, so I'd really only expect him to get run in certain packages. Dixon and Laster, I believe, are both 2nd on the depth chart.

1500: Which true freshman could play this year for Gophers football?

Both Kill and linebackers coach Mike Sherels mentioned that freshmen Jonathan Celestin and Everett Williams are in the mix at linebacker and could have an opportunity to get on the field this season.

Kill sounded hesitant when asked about his two freshman wide receivers, Melvin Holland and Isaiah Gentry. The hope seems to be that both can be redshirted this season, but it could remain a fluid situation in the early half of the season, with the Gophers still trying to find consistent sources of production at receiver.

Go Gophers!!

I posted this in another thread, but is valid here too:
