Anybody transfer out at years end?

I think it's fine to question the transfers. In this case, if Chip were to transfer, it would be the least surprising and most understandable (other than Carter) to me. I've got to believe it would be about playing time, more than anything. We have a lot of players in the back court right now, many of which are young. I doubt he will ever average more than 18-20 minutes a game, and he probably knows that.

I hope he stays because I think he can be a good contributor off the bench, but I don't think it would be a huge surprise if he leaves, or necessarily reflects badly on Tubby.

Agreed.

Here is MY biggest issue sometimes with how people view transfers. They take a guy like Chip who has shown he can make shots, get to the basket and finish and play some imperfect but occasionally great defense. But fans assume some freshman of whom they've seen a highlight video of will come in here and automatically outperform the junior-to-be. Lather, rinse, repeat. That's the cycle of stupidity I refer to in another thread.

I don't think ellenson can right away, eventually hopefully. But with only certain amount of minutes available I'd give them to Welch, Dre and Coleman over Chip and have a happy camper on the bench instead of those 3 getting minutes and a pissed guy on the bench.

Chip has been awesome for us in a lot of games. In no way do I want him to leave and in no way do I think Ellenson will be an equal replacement (he could be, but who knows). But I can't blame chip were he to leave to get more minutes and I can't blame Tubby for playing Dre, Welch, Coleman, and Austin in front of him. So no it isn't ideal if it happens, but I can't blame either side for it. That's my only point. Same with Colton. Obviously I'd love to have him, but I can't blame him for wanting to start as a senior and I can't blame Tubby for playing Trevor, Ralph and possibly Mo at the time, ahead of him.

It's not a good thing by any means, but it happens everywhere with many players and teams.

I didn't mean to be overly harsh, but maybe I was. I just react strongly to the throwaway culture when it comes to these players. Sure there are some that just don't belong at this level and should move on. I don't put Chip in that category. Too many fans treat these players as commodities instead of as fellow members of the Gopher family.

I think in terms of 5/7/9. 5 starters; 7 core players; and a 9-person rotation. That leaves 3 players getting spot duty. Chip is currently a top 9-caliber guy and has a chance to be a 7 or even a 5 by the time he's a senior. I'll take that.

You are right Bad. Ideally you recruit very carefully to the character and type of player you want in your program and you keep turnover to as close to zero as possible. If you have a high percentage of players that leave your program and school as graduates and as fans of the program- that will pay dividends in the long run. An early departure is always a failure of management in full or part.

If Chip leaves, that will leave us all to ponder... What was your favorite offensive move from the Chipster?

1) That fadeaway 3-pointer; a respectable career 27% from the arc, or

2) Drive to the basket, get fouled, then go to the line and miss both FT's

Yes to an extent. We have had too many lately by any measure. Now and then is not a cause for concern. Every year or multiple transfers a year becomes a pattern. That's all I'm saying.

Its not really about Chip imo. He would just be another added to an already lengthy list.

No problem at all. My apologies if it came across that I took it as overly harsh.

I agree though completely. I'd hate to see Chip, Mav or anyone go. If Trevor comes back it'll get interesting though.

I hope Chip stays and continues to work hard and is a starter playing 30 minutes a game his senior year.

Definitely agree.

He's imperfect. However, what I would remember are the two sweetest passes I have seen from any Gopher this year, both resulting in a teammate's layup. I'd remember a guy with no fear on a club filled with it. I'd remember a guy who has a ton of athleticism who is a sophmore who might not be done getting better.

You said it for me again. And for his low 3 point percentage, he made as many big 3's for us as anyone this year. At least he wasn't afraid to shoot. His % in BT play has to be acceptable.

Chip most definitely can play at this level. He's shown that. Right now, we're unbalanced class-wise in the back court. Right now on the team, we have 6 1/2 guys (the 1/2 goes to Oto who can play the 3) that can play the 1-3 spots. All of them return next year. All but one will be around Chip's senior year. The point being that he will probably never get the minutes he wants unless he really separates himself from the rest.

He's a good player and I'd love to have him coming off the bench the next two years. But he is playing a position that is crowded right now and it wouldn't be a surprise at all if he decided to go somewhere else.

Beej. It was a joke. I thought it was funny myself. Maybe not everyone did.

I'm a big Chip fan. I love his energy. Yes, I cringe when he throws up the fadeaway 3-pointer and essentially have to close my eyes when he goes to the line. But he plays with a high motor, gets up and down the court, and it's hard to complain about that. I wish others had his energy and athleticism.

reply to that one was

the first one made me laugh a little but the second one is more in line with how I feel about him. He is the only guy that misses a shot and doesn't look over to Tubby cuz he is worried about coming out. He is ready to shoot it the next time downcourt also.
