IMO, and pure conjecture on my part, I think either Mav or the Chipster hit the road. According to my buddy neither looked like happy campers on the pine. Chipster played about 2 minutes, and Mav never left his seat

I'll bet Chip is gone. Mav- I don't know, he'd have to want to drop a division-where he could be pretty good.

I would just as soon Chip stays, but we can make the dance next year without either one. Wouldn't mind having the scholarships.

I just hope if someone transfers Tubby banks the scholarship.

can't see any coach from another program making too much of an effort to get Chip, Mav, Andre Ingram. Andre Hollins would be the only one I would worry about.

The only thing I am kind of worried about is Rodney leaving for the pros. I don't think he will, but it wouldn't totally shock me if he did.

Johnny Woodard or Phillip Nolan. Would
Prefer Woodard. He's a guy you grab with a scholarship.

Seriously? Will he even make an NBA roster? I see him as a Gopher next year

If one does leave there is a juco point guard Ray Lee that the gophers have looked at. No Gopher offer but he does have a few offers already. Another one would be Deverell Biggs juco pg out of Seward County Community College. I haven't seen him play in a few years but he was very good for Central Omaha. He won state in the high jump twice. If Central gave a crap at all about grades he would have gone to Creighton out of high school, but like most everyone out of the program he had to go juco. Looking at his stats from this year he's still not polished, but he's a slashing point who plays good defense.

Need a scholy for trevor if he is granted a sixth year.

I hope Chip stays. If he doesn't, the questions then become how many minutes and points does he average in a couple years where he ends up, and how likely is it that the Chip bashers on this board step up and call attention to how wrong they were in their criticism? Another cycle of stupidity.

Go Gophers!!

Nolan re-re-classed back to a 2012. So hopefully.

I thought the only hesitation on Woodard was his shoulder. Not sure if he had grade issues as well though.

On GopherHole???

If Trevor comes back then they need a scholership and I can see someone being forced out. I'm not so sure turnover is that beneficial to the program, it as hard to pick up anyone that will really contribute this late and you just end up with more inexperienced players that contribute nothing.

Mav was hurt, hence not playing. Kid could barely walk during warm-ups.

If Chip leaves I would be pretty upset. He has been the only guy on the team who hasn't been afraid of his shadow. I can live with his mistakes more than living with most of the other players fear of making mistakes.

I said to one of the guys I was with last night that you know something is wrong when Andre Ingram gets more burn than Chip Armelin. Crazy.

Probably has something to do with the Gophers needing a big guy to play when Rodney was in foul trouble.

The point is that Chip should have gotten a lot more than two minutes. (Also, Ingram should have never been offered a scholarship. If it was a choice between offering it to him or direct deposit, it should have gone to the bank. He sounds like a nice young man who could contribute to a DII program.)

I'm with you jamiche. I'm a big fan of Chip's. He's got guts and ability. He's not perfect but a great bench player for my money. However, I cannot believe he stays. The handwriting is on the wall for him. If Andre Hollins is able to take the pg position next year (which desparately needs to happen) that swings more of Welch's time over to the 2g sharing with Coleman and even some with Austin. No time for Chip. Tubby and Chip are not a match- just like Bostick. Tubby clearly does not like this type of player (aggressive offensively). I think Joseph and Westbrook are two more who drove the Tubster nuts and vice versa. Be prepared, I'd be very surprised if he's back. I have no inside knowledge.

If he's gone, he's gone. Just win next year 10 to 11 conference games minimum. That's it for me. Win - show me it works.

Chip leaving would make me question Tubby, and his handling of the players, even more than I do now. To not at least question what the heck is going on with all of the transfers is really odd to me. Has nothing to do with Tubby hating, or Tubby loving. Just the fact that too many players have transferred from the team the last few years.

I hope Chip stays. I hope Tubby can find a way to use him.

Who's minutes should he have gotten? Like it or not, Tubby cut down on minutes from the bench. Andre Hollins only logged 12. Welch had 32, Austin had 37 and Coleman had 30. Quite a few posters dislike him going deep into the bench, say it stymies rhythm, ruins the flow. Complete no win situation for Tubby. A W last night, would of course, have solved everything.

Me too.

I think Rodney leaving is more likely than most realize. I also think the Chip love here is a little over the top. He's a bench player. However, another player transferring (any player) may be cause for concern.

Here is my biggest issue sometimes with how people view transfers. They blame Tubby every single time a guy transfers. Not saying all are not his "fault", but just hear me out.

In basketball, you'd usually have an 8 man rotation. That's what most coaches do and what many on this board want as well. The thing is, you have 12 scholarship players. You have 12 guys getting the same compensation. It is not the NBA where you compensate guys differently based on their ability and where that is their job and guys are more willing to be player 9-12.

On the Gophers, you assume you play the five best guys. EE, Ralph, Joe, Andre, Welch, Austin, Rodney with one spot left in the rotation between Oto, Chip, Ingram, and Mav. Depending on the need each game for that 8th spot, 3 of those guys are not going to see significant minutes. Next year, Ralph will be replaced by Mo in the rotation. So you'll have the same situation except you add two freshman (one of which is a guard too) that could also be fighting for that 8th spot.

Obviously, in that situation someone will be unhappy and likely transfer. Yeah, it sucks Colton is gone NOW, but can you blame him for leaving as a senior and being the likely 4th or 5th big? (behind Mo, Ralph, and Trevor - plus if Rod plays the 4 occasionally). No senior is going to stay in that situation regardless of coach. Guys get recruited over. It happens and they leave. It happens at every single school. Had Mo Walker and Trevor Mbakwe not come along or Royce White (had he played) and it was the Colton/Ralph show for 4 years Colton doesn't leave. So if you want to blame Tubby that transfer you are blaming him for signing Trevor and Mo. If Chip or Mav leaves, then blame him for signing Welch, Coleman, Andre or Ellenson.

I have no issue with transfers if it is due to them being recruited over. In the cases of Royce, Cobbs, and Devoe that was not the case. But when you only can give out so many minutes, someone is going to have to sit. And you hope that they either are okay with that and understand their role, or you hope they work harder for it and look to earn minutes, but then they take it from someone else and then they could get unhappy.

Tubby can't worry about "hurting feelings" when playing guys, he has to worry about winning. I like Chip. I like Mav. I think they are decent players, Chip is a bit better though. But if I had to choose between giving minutes to Chip or Joe, Andre and Welch. I'm taking Joe, Andre, and Welch every time.

Do I want to see someone leave? Absolutley not. In no way shape or form would I like to see a guy transfer, but the truth of the matter is, some guys are not happy sitting on the bench (especially as upperclassmen like Colton) and if that happens, chances are they transfer. However, you hope that in those cases we have a viable plan. With Colton leaving they had Mo (Whoops) and Trevor (Double Whoops) and Ralph (Tripple Whoops). With Chip or Mav leaving you have Welch, Andre, Joe, Austin and Ellenson.

Especially if you can replace Chip with Woodard, who as a freshman may not expect big minutes right away. Or Nolan who is a big and there is less of a log jam there.

IMO, the transfers of Royce, Devoe, and Cobbs have not hurt Tubby for the talent aspect as much as they've hurt the minutes aspect. What Bo Ryan does VERY well is he recruits classes and develop and then they step in. When his SF, for example, graduates he has a junior ready to step in. When guys of different classes leave at once and you replace them with guys of the same class, it messes that plan up. You don't want 5 player recruiting classes you want 2-3 player classes so that you have an evenly distributed team. When you can't "re-load" every year that is how you build. When you bring in those big classes you have to use red shirts creativley (part of the reason I think they had Mo sit this year) to break the class up. Transfers that are not due to being recruited over don't just kill you talent wise, but class set up as well.

It will be interesting to see if anyone does leave, but if it is Mav or Chip I think we have enough talent in front of them that it isn't the end of the world, plus it breaks up that Sophomore class even more.

However, all that said. I hope none of them leave and continue to grow and get better as a team together.

I think it's fine to question the transfers. In this case, if Chip were to transfer, it would be the least surprising and most understandable (other than Carter) to me. I've got to believe it would be about playing time, more than anything. We have a lot of players in the back court right now, many of which are young. I doubt he will ever average more than 18-20 minutes a game, and he probably knows that.

I hope he stays because I think he can be a good contributor off the bench, but I don't think it would be a huge surprise if he leaves, or necessarily reflects badly on Tubby.
