Anybody else notice....

It happened in large part because even on 3rd and 15, Illinois had so little respect for our passing game that they had 4 guys hitting him at the line of scrimmage.

And he should have given up and gone done, because even if he broke the tackle, three other guys were going to hit him before he was within 10 yards of the first down. He risked everything for a chance to gain nothing, that was a stupid play by Cobb.

Speaking of stupid plays, I know we got to run a play because of the penalty, but who runs out of bounds with 0 seconds left in the fourth quarter when you are losing? Our guys' heads weren't in the game today.

No, he was grabbed by one player, and another came in and stripped it from him because he was trying to do too much in a situation where he had no chance of getting the first down.

Either way, if you know you're going to get hit by four players, then get two hands on the ball. That's fundamentals.

To be fair, the clock went to 0 right as he went out of bounds. Probably thought he had time left. Who knows, maybe the sideline was yelling at him to get out of bounds.

Not sure. He's a true freshman and didn't think about the clock stopping after a change of possession?

Not like it would have made a difference. We probably would have had 5 seconds which is still only enough for 1 play. Hopefully he is made aware of that option for future reference.

Well to me the game was lost at 14-0. We weren't ready. 7 days after having to squeak out a win for the same dang reason. Season very well could be a train wreck the rest of the way.

This. Yes, we would likely have won if Santoso makes the field goal or Cobb doesn't fumble. But we never should have been in a nail-biter with Illinois in the first place.

BINGO.

The bigger issue for me is when/how he is fumbling. Most of them aren't in situations where he is hit hard or a defender gets their helmet on the ball. There's no excuse for the fumble today. Shouldn't happen.

Correct and it is something a coach controls with communication just as instructions to your punt returner what you want him to do to stop the clock. And instructions to your quarterback on the last play of the game...you have zero chance to win if you throw it out of bounds. You are not going to throw it 70 yards into the end zone. It needs to be an intermediate crossing route in the middle of the field with a designed lateral change of direction.

How about throwing a Hail Mary out of bounds?

Cobb is what, the 4th leading rusher in the nation. He's been breaking tackles and grinding out yardage all year. But because you have the benefit of hindsight, he should have slid and just went down... ridiculous.

I'm not saying it's one of the bigger problems on the team. We played a pretty crummy game in all facets, but spotting the other team 7 points in the final 7 minutes largely contributes to a 4 point loss.

Remember when Adrian Peterson had a fumbling problem? Remember how much coverage it got and how every announcer mentioned it multiple times a game? He averaged a fumble every other game during that stretch where he was labeled "fumble prone". Cobb has the same average this season.

Coincidentally, at that time the Vikings were a one dimensional team giving AP 25+ carries/gm just like the Gophers are doing with Cobb. When you pound the same player with the same play over and over,
stuff like this is bound to happen. How many jet-sweeps we run today? 2? They both got first downs. How many touches did Kirkwood, Williams or Edwards get? Lightning in the bottle, well...he's in a bottle
alright, the bottle called the sideline. How many seam screens did we dump to Maxx that's worked every single time?

I'm going back with my non-con issues with Kill, Limegrover and this offense. The play calling is arrogantly and stubbornly vanilla. 'pound the rock', is all Kill wants. Again, last year...when Limegrover was
given free reign from Claeys to call plays that he wanted, we had a very fun offense, jet-sweeps, trickery, miss-balance and shifty blocking...and guess what, IT WORKED! Got us 4 straight B1G wins, including
over PSU and NEBRASKA! WOW!!!!!!! Not super close bs wins over NW and Purdont @ home and a terrible loss to IlliNOwhere.

You continually state things like this as if you know for sure. The offense also scored a combined 29 points in the Michigan, NW, Wisconsin, and Michigan St. games last year. It's also odd that you bring up Purdue, a game we would have scored 40+ if we don't miss an extra point.

Today we ran jet sweeps and threw deep a lot and had some success.

The point is you have no clue if Kill is holding back Limegrover.

The benefit of hindsight? We ran a give up play on third and long. When you do that, the first, second, and third objective of the play are not to turn the ball over. Ball security should have been the only thing on Cobb's mind on that play.

I think Cobb should have went down. I think Cobb will agree. It doesn't take away from how great he is or his accomplishments. Just a bad play by a great player.

The one point of this I do agree with is Cobb's carries. Even if you have no one else, you can't beat your running back like this.

In the NFL they talk about how guys are never the same after a season of 400 carriers and the Cowboys at least talk a game of concern for Demarco Murry right now. The Gophers seem to just feel as long as Cobb isn't injured he's fine.

In a 16 game season Cobb would hit 422 carries at the current pace and he takes a LOT of hits. Not sure that this fumble has anything to do with it, but I do worry the overworking of Cobb will catch up to us and him in a bad way. Have to find some carries for Kirkwood, Williams, and Edwards.
