Announcers diss our win over Ohio St.

osu

The committee is going to put a lot more weight on how the team was playing without him, for better or worse. Those early losses would be discounted somewhat if the team was clearly better without him, but that's for the committee to decide.

Some of you Gopher fans are doing your best Wisconsin fan impression with the lack of respect mantra. A key player for OSU was in his second game back from serious injury and your team had the services of a player who later became ineligible - those are both logical reasons to discount that win, like it or not. Sure, the national media commonly makes an obvious error when mentioning this game, but they also don't mention Nolen playing in it, and the loss of him could be an excuse to discount every single win you had while he played if the committee felt your team was better with him. The media could be out there saying at every opportunity "they do have that Butler win and the OSU win, but it was with Al Nolen, and without Nolen the Gophers are 9-6 and only have four good wins, one at home against UW with Leuer in his first game back from injury, one at Illinois who might not make the tourney, one vs. a shorthanded MSU team in the BTT and one vs. a shorthanded PU team in the BTT" but instead they tend to ignore all that and say your team will make the NCAA tourney. Your team gets a chance tomorrow to show that the first win wasn't a fluke, so there's a great opportunity to earn the respect & the NCAA bid that you think you should have.

You have missed the point entirely and have built a straw man.

Our objection is simple.

CBS announcers said, more than once, Evan Turner did not play in the first Gopher-Buckeye game this year, which the Gophers won.

Factually not true. He played 38 minutes and had one heck of a game.

Period.

Still missing the point entirely.

It would be perfectly fair if an announcer tried to downplay the win with the Nolen/Turner coming back angle. I wouldn't agree, but it would at least be a fact-based argument.

Completely lying about the game is a different story. Especially when you are one of the top analyst for the brodcasting company that airs the tournament. Especially when you pass the lie off as truth more than once. How can you not see how this is insulting. I don't CK actually does know Turner played (that'd be a whole other bag of issues), so basically Kellogg thinks Minnesota matters so little, he won't even make the effort to look at a box score before evaluating the teams resume on national TV, and instead, just assumes Minnesota had to have won against no Turner, because of his opinions on the team. I'd be totally fine if national announcers brought up the Nolen argument when discussing our resume, at least it means they had enough respect for Minnesota to take the time to actually look at the resume and evaluate it (you know, what their job description says).

It's got nothing to do at all with how deserved the victory was, or how much it should count towards our NCAA resume, or what the committee will think. It has to do with the condescending indifference of some of the high profile analyst/commentators towards Minnesota, and the surprise that no one at CBS caught the mistake either time, or if they did, felt it wasn't important enough to correct the lie on air.

We beat a shorthanded MSU team and a shorthanded Purdue team, but we could say the same thing. We are missing three players who were projected starters at the beginning of the season. This team is playing it's best basketball now.

Why would those games be discounted? Those games weren't close victories and the team has actually performed better with Nolen out. I'm pretty sure the committee doesn't go back and say let's discount that Butler win since they obviously wouldn't have won with their current roster.

The Big L made a fine rebuttal of your primary argument, so I won't even touch the misstatement of fact angle.

The second absolutely ridiculous part of your argument is the comparison of Nolen to Turner. If you've followed Minnesota at all closely this season, you would realize the they are actually a better team now than they ever were with Nolen. Turner is the national player of the year and OSU sucked hard without him. Even if you disagree with my opinion of Nolen's worth, there is no way to even reasonable compare his value to Turner's, and thus is much less worthy of being mentioned.

In addition, your "they're only 9-6 with only four good wins without Nolen" argument is actually a mark in Minnesota's favor. Every team plays about 8 or 9 cupcakes in the beginning of the year. Teams with .500 record or slightly above outside of these cupcakes generally make the tournament. Many teams we are being compared to (such as Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Rhode Island and even Wake Forest) don't have four good wins all season.

I'm not sure what has upset you so badly so as to make such a poorly thought out argument. There was never any criticism of OSU's team, just the clueless announcer alum.

Don't know you but you sound like someone I wouldn't like.

He is going to say the same thing at the start of the game too, idiot. I'm sending him an email, but who knows if he will see it by then. It's gonna really tick me off when and if he says it again.

does anybody know anybody going to the game today? if clit kellogg is announcing the game, i will paypal someone $100 to call him out on live tv..."excuse me, sorry guys, turner DID play against the gophers when OSU lost to them."

I sent a note late in the game to whoever is running the game blog at gophersports.com. Could be an option if they screw it up again early in the game.

Ouch, being compared to a Badger fan hurts worse than anything.

SOM< thanks for the link...

Fill out the feedback form below and tell CBS we beat OSU with Turner in the game and expect to hear it reported as such tomorrow.

Here's what I just sent to CBS:

Yesterday's coverage of the Minnesota-Purdue Big Ten Tournament semi-final was filled with glaringly inaccurate statements made by Mr. Kellogg, an Ohio State University (OSU) alumnus, concerning the Minnesota-OSU game played in Minneapolis on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010.. Specifically, Mr. Kellogg repeatedly stated that Minnesota had beaten the Buckeyes without OSU's star guard Evan Turner being in the line-up. Had Mr. Kellogg done due diligence and checked the scorecard from that game (available on either OSU's or Minnesota's athletic web sites), Mr. Kellogg would have seen that Mr. Turner played 38 minutes in that game, scored 19 points with 7 assists and 4 steals, as well as committed 4 personal fouls and 4 turnovers. I appreciate Mr. Kellogg's enthusiasm and support for his alma mater, but his inaccurate statements hurt his credibility and do a disservice to his audience and followers of Minnesota basketball. I trust he will acknowledge his inaccurate statements during today's Big Ten championship broadcast.
