Andries, Renner Named to Academic All-America Team

Minnesota's Blaise Andries and Sam Renner were named to the 2019 Academic All-America Division I Football Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) today. Andries and Renner were both slotted on the Second Team. This honor recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

Renner was also named to the Second Team last year, but this is the first honor for Andries. Minnesota now has five Academic All-America team members in the last two years, as Payton Jordahl and Gary Moore were also recognized last year. Prior to this, Minnesota last had five players recognized from 2004-15.

Renner, who started his career as a walk-on, is Minnesota's first repeat Academic All-American team member since Greg Eslinger in 2004-04. Renner has already graduated with a degree in Applied Economics and is now working on his Master's of Accountancy. Renner starts on the defensive line for the Gophers and has 40 tackles, which includes 7.0 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks this year.

Andries is majoring in Mathematics and is an aspiring actuary. The sophomore has played in 25 career games and has helped anchor an offensive line that has enabled Minnesota quarterback Tanner Morgan to set single-season passing record in yards (2,975) and passing touchdowns (28). Minnesota has also run and threw for more than 20 touchdowns in each of the last two seasons. That is the second time since 1955 that Minnesota has consecutive seasons with at least 20 passing and rushing scores.

Go Gophers!!

I love that our guys are taking advantage of the wonderful academic opportunity they have here. Nothing like a good education more insures a chance at an economically solid life. Go Gophers!!

Nice work in the classroom fellas!

For some reason, a twist to the TV commercial popped into my head:

"So you're an aspiring actuary. How long have you had this dream?"

"Thirty years."

"So your're 21 years old, and you've had this dream for 30 years . . ."

Hat's off to Thee! Blaise is going to make some serious coin right from the get-go.
