He posted on facebook that he's moved to Miami and intends to live there long term. Does this close the book on him as a Gopher?

No. Which is to the coaching staff's credit, as it really doesn't matter. What anything ever said about the problems or reason for leaving the program?
Is it my imagination or does Minnesota have an inordinate number of highly rated high school athletes that have issues that keep them from reaching their potential? McDonald is just the latest. Why is that?
Yes, it is your imagination. You think we have issues, what about all of the problems that Iowa has had in recent years...across many of their athletic teams. Kids will be kids, no matter what institution you are talking about.
Every state does. It's just that, as zman said, when your number of "elite" talents is 1-2 a year, it's much easier to focus your attention on them and only them.I believe gophertime is referring to Minnesota high school athletes in general , not just those who were in the Gopher program. And yes , Minnesota seems to their fair share of the Willie Mobley/Royce White types.

Hope him the best. Kids make mistakes they can't unmake...hope he figures it out before he can't unmake it. Getting an education and learning how to be an adult is important. Hope he does both.

Actually it does matter. He could have been a top receiver. What if he quit because a coach abused him? Or what if his Mom's best friend talked him into it?

I think the book on him as a Gopher was closed a long time ago.
I'm about 99.9% sure his comment was sarcastic. I hope so, anyway. It would be easy to respond to your comments by calling you an idiot, but that wouldn't serve any useful purpose. I think the David Cobbs of the world will tell you that if you do what the coaches ask and buy in, you can be highly successful. You should seek out someone to help you get your life back on track.
You could probably add Sam Maresh and Seantrel Henderson to that list as well. I think it is just because our shallow talent pool makes it more visible.
Where have you gone Walker Ashley, Gopher Nation turns it's lonely eyes to you.
McDonald had potential but his production was virtually nothing. He looked pedestrian at the fall scrimmage. He would be behind Wolitarsky, Jones and Engel IMO.
He's living with Willie Mobley out in New Mexico.
Is Sam Maresh there as well?
Seriously, what ever happened to that guy? I know he went to a JUCO for a year, but that was the last I heard of him.
