It looks like Andre Ingram, a 6-7, 235-pound forward from Butler County CC, will commit to Minnesota. Their class would be 2 FR and 2 jucos.

why? with mbakwe coming back its a wasted scholly. now only 2 in 2012, which we need to be a good class, or our program tanks for awhile. Our team is filled with spring recruits! not a good thing necessarily

but why? we now have 3 centers, and 3 Pfs. someone is gonna get unhappy and transfer

If Trevor comes back- great! He only has a year left. In 2012-2013 year Walker Will either be the starting or back up center with Sampson gone. Now we have a future PF.

I'm really hoping Mbakwe returns, but it's not a 100% certainty yet. Even if Mbakwe returns we need someone to step in right away at power forward the following year once he's gone.

Edit: I just saw the thread that Mbakwe is officially coming back. Hopefully that holds true, but my point above remains the same.

he tweeted he is coming back, 2. Ingram will be a junior i believe, so he'll be here for 2 years, and be done right away. im a little skeptical to say the least.

I wish Tubby liked point guards half as much as he likes PFs and Cs.

And concur that there are getting to be way too many spring signees and jucos on the roster.

Lack of open scholarships has been a major issue in recent years. Yeah, I deeply share your concern. Oh wait...

I actually like this move. Our priority for the 2012 class is inside players, and Tubby predictably is after them (AJ Hammons, Adam Woodbury, and Cinmeon Bowers). We are going to get probably two big bodies though not necessarily the aforementioned. Once TM and Ralph are gone, we will need one more mature body for rebounding and defense worth about 10 minutes a game while the new comers are learning to fit in. Ingram will play that role. He is like “bridge capital.”

From what I have seen, one of our incumbent guards may have to vacate on his own or by persuasion depending on how things go. Possibly two of them. (If not, it means everybody is working out, and that is good.) If so, we will have 3 to 4 schollies for 2012. If Mav is gone, Tubby may have to look at Chambers seriously.

you cant just kick players or "persuade them" off a team, tubby has more class than that i would think. ofcourse i have no inside knowledge. Also why chambers? Staten, Demarquise Johnson, and Gesell are all better players that we could have if only we had open schollies not occupied by players that have played basketball since their senior year of high school

Well.... alright...

Andre is a local kid. If Tubby is planning on pressing next season, we need athletes and bodies and guys that can finish around the rim. I think we're getting this.

Ingram is basically taking Colton's scholarship. From a team balance perspective, this is a positive. It was obvious last year that it was a challenge when Tubby would play multiple posts at one time. Next season he will still have Ralph, Elliott and Mo. Adding another forward that is athletic enough to extend the defense is a positive. I have only seen clips of Andre, but if his game is similar to Trevor's he will be fun to watch during the next couple years.

I don't know, just a hunch, but I think something else may be in the pipeline.

They are on 1 year renewable scholarships... so yes, you can.

It doesn't look good for future recruits if you make a habit of taking someone's scholarship away and giving it to someone else. I'd prefer we avoid doing that for the sake of recruiting.

I guess people are taking "by persuasion" as forcefully kicking someone out. Most coaches don't tell their kids to haul ass. It is just a matter of getting minutes. If someone is not working out, the coach will tell him about playing time. If he wants to stick around despite that, coaches usually let him. A lot of players, however, will choose to seek better opportunities in terms of playing time. Coaches will have to initiate the talk.

it does sound like though the whole team has been working hard this off season. Mav and Austin put up about 800 shots yesterday after working with everyone else as well. I'd say they are serious about winning and getting better. Going to be exciting.

There has even been the introduction of the twitter hash tag #2012Big10Champs

I am fine if there are no new recruits added or if they stick with the current team, I think next year could be very good.

Ingram will also work well on defense and from the Monter interview, he is a very hard worker and always trying to improve.

Busch transfered to the U to be a walk-on. It's a little different.

Am I missing someone? I can only come up with five "bigs" on the roster - Sampson, Walker, Mbakwe, Eliason, and Ingram. You seem to think there are six. Five is a nice number. In fact, you really need at least five, not knowing for sure how soon Walker is back and how effective he'll be when he returns. We are definitely more heavy on wings/guards, so adding a PF is the way to go, IMHO.

oto osenieks is a PF/SF so i count him

Oto is not a PF. He's a tall, lean, athletic, outside-shooting SF.

The roster composition:

bigs - Sampson, Mbakwe, Eliason, Walker, Ingram
wings - Coleman, Hollins, Williams, Osenieks
guards - Hollins, Welch, Armelin, Ahanmisi

Without Ingram (or some other PF), we are a little thin with the bigs, especially not knowing for sure about Walker's recovery, and god forbid, if Trevor does decide to bolt (I know he says he won't and I believe that, but you never know).

osenieks deffinately is a PF. he was listed as a PF out of high school, he played PF in high school. Just be cause he can shoot outside doesn't make him a wing. He can play both, PF being his primary position on every team hes played on so far

I like the addition of Ingram, but I would add Dom Dawson at PF. He has the body / strength of a PF and he improved enough last year to get some court time. Likely will never be a star, but he is big and strong and hopefully will make another leap in development next year.

Rodney played "center" in high school. Not saying Oto isn't a power forward, but sometimes players play certain positions in high school out of necessity. From everything I've read he sounds like you could consider him a stretch 4 or a 3 though. I'll just consider him a tweener until I actually see him play.

Ingram makes sense to me because we need a big body that can rebound and defend for limited playing time to relieve the core players for two seasons. I think he will be very useful and a great insurance policy for the team. If he can provide us with more than that, it will be an amazing bonus. We don’t need another limited role player at the perimeter. We should not save the schollie as the most immediate task is to put a competitive team with a hint of depth as we have only three bigs (or two depending on perspective) with real experience.

I would not consider Oto as a legit Big Ten PF. He probably will be a specialist/role player with limited minutes, if playing at the 4, when we need additional firepower from behind the arc. If he is quick enough to defend some Big Ten swingmen, he may see more minutes as the 3.

Transfers, I believe, should not be treated summarily as failures or a cause of great concern without considering the context of each case. You put many kids together and let them compete for limited playing time. Then, you are bound to have some kids unhappy with what they get, and they sometimes have to pursue their own interest in the form of transfer unless they get what they want. Most of them are role players and rather easily replaceable under normal circumstances. So, transfer is not a serious issue unless we start losing impact players that are hard to replace. We have had only two such transfers, Royce and perhaps to a lesser degree, Devoe. Both cases are ridden with non-basketball issues. Yet, I would think Devoe’s transfer is a legit concern. And, the timing was horrendous. But again, it does not mean that we should treat transfers as the absolute evil. They sometimes are a necessary evil. More often than some of you may think, they are a necessity good for the team and the transferring players.

I understand why people are concerned with transfers, especially with the nightmare we had last season. But, I think it is becoming an irrational fear to some degree just because it was one of the compounding factors leading to the unusual situation and finish.
