Anders Broman: Another star who got away?

Anders Broman is the leading scorer in Minnesota for 2 years in a row now with and average of almost 50 ppg.

He is a great member of the Howard Pulley Panthers team with Tyus Jones.

He's headed to SDSU just like Nate WOLTERS did. Could he fill it up in college and cause the gophers to regret signing him? Only time will tell I guess.

But I have a feeling he'll turn out to be a mid-major star.
 

I guess we'll find out in 4 years. If he's a mid major star then good for him. If he's good enough he should pull a Seth curry and transfer. Nate Wolters should have done that but he didn't. He has no one to blame but himself.
 

I would suggest that a better analogy (than Wolters or Tyus Jones) for Broman is probably Cody Schilling.

I don't think people realize that being a mid-major star (or even just averaging in the range of ~14ppg) says very little about how they would do in a major D-I program.
 

He sure as hell would be nice to have come off the bench and shoot. Unlike Oto.
 


Joe Coleman would have been a mid major star...who cares.
 






Can't ever regret not signing someone who goes to SDSU. If a kid goes to SDSU (or NDSU in Woodside's case), he's been passed over not just by Big Ten schools, but by A-10 type schools and probably Missouri Valley type schools. There's at least another two tiers of schools that have passed on kids between Minnesota and landing at SDSU. Broman played with Tyus on the Summer circuit, everyone saw him play. That's not to say he can't play or wouldn't be effective, just that it's unfair to criticize a coach at a high major for passing on him.

He doesn't shoot well enough to be a star anywhere IMO. Good player and very athletic, but what position would he start at? Joe is kind of lucky he is playing on a pretty good team because he is more of a supporting cast player.

Yes. Huge miss, followed him with Pulley and he was a stud among studs, perfect complement to Tyus. We will be talking about him on GH just like, or more than Nate Wolters.
 



He would have been GREAT off the bench. Very disappointed that Tubby didnt go after him
 

Good luck to Anders! Hopefully he works as hard as Wolters so we can bitch about the potential miss for 4 years!

AND argue ad nauseum as to whether or not he could have played at the B1G level.
 

It looks like we're signing just one wing player this year so it comes down to would you rather have Broman or Ellis? One has offers from Kansas St., Wichita St., and Northwestern. The other doesn't have a single BCS conference offer.

Who knows, Broman could end up being the better player, but it's more likely Ellis will end up being better.
 

Why is it that we bash Tubby's recruiting for going after guys like Chip, Mav, and Edozie, and then ask why we don't recruit 0-2 star players from Minnesota that only have offers from mid-majors? There seems to be something that makes marginal recruits 10 times more appealing to people on here as long as they're from in-state.

Good point, but the reason people are all up in arms about it is that so many of those "lesser" players end up being stars at others schools, including but not limited to Wisconsin, Iowa, SDSU, NDSU...

Of course we never hear about those that end up going to those schools and don't do much of anything.

Not sure about what "lesser" players you're talking about at Wisconsin or Iowa. Berggren had an offer. So did Leuer. Bruesewitz is not a star and was the same year as Williams and White. We had signed Al Nolen the year before Jordan Taylor. Andrew Brommer didn't do much at Iowa. Anthony Tucker ended up being a good player for two years before transferring. Plus we signed Devoe Joseph that same year.

That's the problem with a lot of people who are saying we should have offered this or that player. They don't look at what positions we had open and who we signed that year. You can't have eight power forwards/centers on the team at once. Sure it would be nice to have a guy like Mike Muscala on the team now, but at that time there is no way you take him over Mbakwe, Rodney Williams, or Royce White. No way.

How does anyone know if he "got away" from the Gophers. Maybe he told Tubby he wasn't interested or Tubby didn't want him.

I doubt whether Rivals rated second line Gopher players like Mav, Otto, would be instant stars at SDSU, NSDU, etc. similar to a Woodside and Walters.
 

Kid can flat out play-anywhere. Anybody that says other has not watched him! Not sure about starting for minn- but would be great off the bench.

Bo Ryan, Fran McCaffery, Tubby Smith, Fred Hoiberg, and every other BCS coach in America disagrees with you.
 


I guess we'll have to wait... And watch. If i remember wolters had only offers from und, ndsu etc..
 


The Minnesota players who got away thread are idiotic because you cannot predict how players respond to different coaching styles. I give a few examples of players who were here and have put up better numbers in different programs. Compare Colton Iverson stats this season to Alec Brown who is at Wisc GB or compare Devoe Joseph stats in the Pac 12 to Nate Wolters or even Justin Cobbs stats Wolters. I am not saying Wolters or Brown are bad players but they are at low mid major programs with teammates who are also low mid major, which will inflate their numbers compared to playing in a high major program with other high major players. If you think Devoe Joseph would not average 25+ at South Dakota State you have no clue about basketball. Look at Paul Carter numbers in the Horizon League compared to the Big Ten.
