Anatomy of the Brew's '08 recruiting class

Thanks for the thread. I also think Brew has not lived up to being the great recruiter he claimed he would be. Nobody is impressed with his coaching and if he is not a great recruiter, why is he here and even getting extended?

Agreed. He was hired for his ability to recruit first and foremost, and to this point has not landed a single impact player. That could change, but as of now I agree that there has been nothing to say he has landed any big time impact players. You can talk about potential all you want and the new guys coming up, but as of now there has been no impact players. McKinght and Gray could be those guys next year, and I hope they are. I am still a firm believer that Brew should get through 2011 (unless next year is a 2-10 season or something like that) to get his recruits all through the program, but if we are still 6-6 in 2011 then a change should be made. This program has been the worst or 2nd worst in the B10 over the past 20+ years, along with Indiana, and I long for the days where 8-9 win seasons are common, not a reason for celebration.

Recruiting around here is a totally different animal. Landing a class that could even be mention for top 25 worthiness was practically a miracle considering how apathetic this fan base was at the time. Since then, he's done nothing but bring in a multitude of players that would have been our "marquee" signees about three years ago. Guys like Willie Tatum or James Manuel would've been huge talk around here, but now, they're just another of the talented guys who are coming here to play for the Gophers. Brewster has completely changed our perspective of recruiting from where it was before.

Agreed, perspective is seriously lacking in the fanbase that is upset with Brewster's tenor.
As for the lack of impact recruits or star players, I think it is fair to point that out, only as it is fair to point out that there really haven't been many superstar types around here for the last 4 years.
Probably only 2 NFL drafted players since 07. Solid contributors have been made from freshmen and sophmores and JUCOs. Where will Stoudemire, Mcknight, Green, Gray, Kirksey, Edwards, Cooper, Grant, Carter, Wilhite, Tinsley, Allen, or Oreseske be when they are seniors? All have flashed ability some even greatness, all have shown they are also raw and have alot to improve upon. Then there are the 15 RS freshmen playing next year we haven't even seen. If all 15 have the type of seasons we got from Wilhite, Grant, Whaley and Cooper(this year's RS freshmen) the future will look quite bright won't it?

Dude, I've tried, but I just can't do it anymore. I've seen it so many times that I can no longer bite my tongue.

The word is spelled "tenure".

Unless you've been referring to his singing voice? ;)

hmm, my bad if so, I thought that's how you spell it though.

Huh. Learn something new every day.

I still think tenure is a much better choice, though.

I think the reference was to the "tone" of Brewster (e.g., his optimistic outbursts). At least that is how I took it.

Fair enough. If that's the case, my mistake.

I think I'm so excited for the Vikes that I can't think straight lately.

Greatness? I have not seen that, aside from maybe McKinght's performance in the bowl game. Aside from that single game, I fail to see any "greatness". Although I will agree that greatness is different in different people's eyes.

You mean us Gopher fans are allowed to be Viking fans too? Thank goodness! Now, I can dig my Viking horns out of the closet and watch a great game!

Flashes, but yes I think we've seen greatness. Not consistently, but it's been there.
Tinsley against Iowa was impressive. Mcknight against MSU and ISU was pretty impressive.
Kirksey was dominant early in the year. Stoudemire has made some eye popping moves in the return game and in the open field. Green has made some legit catches. Wilhite sealed the NW and SDSU games with sacks and fumble recoveries. I think everyone can see what Cooper and Gray could develop into. There have been big time plays made by these young guys. Further development and maturity will only improve their game. Again we haven't even seen most of the 09 class yet.

Aside from McKinght in the Bowl game the lone flashes of greatness I personally witnessed the last 3 years was Weber's ability to not end up in the hospital playing behind that O-Line and Decker before he got hurt both years. Maybe there is more that I missed, but seriously, greatness?

Wilhite, Cooper is going to be All Big Ten. Mcknight was mentioned. The big boys inside on the Dline did a nice job for youngsters, Mr. Carter. Green, stoudemire, Bennet, Eskridge, Lair, McKnight are all going to be Juniors. Do a little research, make a top ten of Sophmore from this past years RB's and WR's in the B10 and see what you get. Allen. Orseke. The talent is there, and it is real.

I am not the biggest fan of "Brewster the football coach," but "Brewster the recruiter" gets it. He knows how to recruit, and he knows how to play the game. Get the 4 star players that not many people are recruiting so the recruiting class looks better to the fans, get kids who are local to make sure that he doesn't get ripped in the media for letting good players go elsewhere and contribute, even if they aren't going to contribute here, and he also gets good players, that maybe wouldn't want to come here if it wasn't for his recruiting style. Also, if you look at the 2008 highlights of the class on ESPN.com they include Reeves, Tinsley, Dandridge, Green, Gray, Cooper, Maresh, Careful, and Edwards. And if you look at those guys, they pretty much all have a chance to make a BIG impact next season (besides Dandridge obviously). So you can't really say that 2008 was already a failure, it is still too soon to say. We have to see how these players progress, which is a big part of coaching. Once you get the guys in your system, what do you do with them.

I agree there is potential there, but to say that Wilhite and Cooper will be all B10 is putting the cart in front of the horse, IMO. Development of these players is going to be a key, and I have net seen that happen yet here under this staff. I am sure there is an example or two that I am missing, but which players have become a ton better over the past couple of years? Triplett I guess...

Poor sentence contsruction. My bad. Cooper and McKnight are future stars. The rest just guys that have shown enough promise to be worth keeping an eye on.
