An End of an Era at Nebraska

The rv/rv Minnesota Golden Gophers (20-9, 8-8) try for their third win in a row Wednesday night at Nebraska (13-16, 4-12). The Huskers will be playing their last game at the Bob Devaney Center which has been their home for 37 years. Game time is set for 8:06pm CT and this one can be viewed on the Big Ten Network.

Game Preview: rv/rv Minnesota (20-9, 8-8) at Nebraska (13-16, 4-12) 3/6/13

Minnesota scored the first seven points of the game and never looked back in their 84-65 win over Nebraska in January. On Monday Tim Miles said about the game, “We just didn’t compete. The game started off poorly for us and only got worse from there.”

The Gophers came into that contest having lost four in a row. Rodney Williams had an especially rough couple of performances leading up to Nebraska (9 combined points on 3/17 shooting against Northwestern and Wisconsin), but exploded for 19 first half points before finishing with 23.

The hot shooting of Husker guard Ray Gallegos (30 points, 12/17 shooting including 6/9 3FG) was the only thing that kept the score within 20 points. The Gophers made more free throws than Nebraska attempted, dominated the glass and had a plus-7 turnover margin.

This time around Minnesota enters having won two in a row and is back at .500 in the Big Ten. The best the Gophers can finish is sixth place, but they’d much prefer doing so with a winning record of 10-8.

Although Nebraska will likely be double-digit underdogs, they have the intangible of this being the last regular season game at the Devaney Center in their favor. Beginning this fall the men’s and women’s teams will play at the new Pinnacle Bank Arena in downtown Lincoln.

Husker Hall of Famers Dave Hoppen, Erick Strickland and Eric Piatkowski will be present to celebrate Senior Night and 37 years of basketball in the Devaney Center. If great memories don’t get the fans excited, the $1 popcorn and Pepsi’s should.

Minnesota is the better team by just about any measurement, but they are beatable when they don’t make their 2-point field goals. The good news for Nebraska, who is 0-13 against RPI top 50 teams this season, is that Minnesota doesn’t make their 2-point field goals on the road.

The Gophers are 1-6 on the road in the Big Ten this season. Excluding games in which Minnesota is the visitor, the home team in 2012-13 Big Ten contests has won 63% of the time. If Minnesota wins at both Nebraska and Purdue, their 3-6 record on the road shouldn’t be a problem. However, a 2-7 or 1-8 mark could cost them when it comes to NCAA tournament seeding.

I see the Gophers winning this one comfortably, but keep an eye on their 2-point field goal shooting.

OTHER NOTES

Trevor Mbakwe was named the Big Ten’s Player of the Week based on his performances against Indiana and Penn State.

In case you missed it (from yesterday): More Than a Number: Trevor Mbakwe’s 8.8 Rebounds per Game looks at Trevor's impressive rebounding percentages this season.

Recruiting notes (via LateNightHoops.com): The Gophers are very interested in Palm Beach State College sophomore Kevin Thomas. He’s expected to be eligible for D1 competition this fall.

The Minnesota high school boys’ basketball sectionals are underway. The state tournament takes place March 20-23 at Target Center and Williams Arena. Schedules can be found at MSHSL.org and the knowledgeable TC Hoops Czar has offered up his predictions at tchoops.blogspot.com.

I don't think the closing of the Devaney Center will spark any crazy emotions. It's similar, but not as bad, as our football era at the Metrodome. Dumpy building, historically bad Nebraska teams, etc.

Nebraska "double digit underdogs", at home?? On Senior Night? Really??

Try 7.5, across the board according to the guys that know (oddsmakers). Nice attempt at down-playing the competition though. Gotta love the "they should CRUSH this Big Ten team on their home floor" pre-game analysis.

Devaney closing... Only game I ever saw there was when Clem and company stopped there on their way to the Final Four. What a physical basketball game. Sat in the middle of the Husker student section clad in Gopher gear, almost pushed Lil Red to the floor on the way into the arena when he stepped in my way after seeing my Gopher gear. Good times!!!

Was thinking the same thing.. normally I enjoy the pregames.. but this one was kind of a throw away...the normal stats but not much player analysis from the other team and the reality is, Nebraska will be a tough out at their gym. That said, we are the better team, so we need to win this game.

Interesting game tonight in Lincoln. A lot of ceremonies are planned for tonight, former players, all Devaney team being named, senior night and so on. Gophers should win, but alot of karma with the Huskers tonight. Gallegos has been terrible since having the big game against the Gophers in Minnesota. Talley has been very good his last 6 games averaging nearly 20 a game. Interesting game for me, being a life long Gopher fan, I have watched way more basketball games at Devaney than at the Barn since moving here in 1981. Just like the other 150 games or so that I have attended at the Bob, I will be wearing maroon and gold.

We are the better team than either Nebraska or Purdue. If we drop either of those games, I feel like they would fall into the category of games we lost rather than ones that they won. You are right to not take anything for granted though, if the players go in there assuming a win, it could get ugly for us.

I hate to say it but this game has got Gopher loss written all over it.

Has Warrior been let out of the penalty box on this board? I have not seen his byline in a while.

Minnesota has no business losing this game. The line was set low - already has grown everywhere. Las Vegas Hotel's has just been pushed another half point to 8.5, but those are just odds set by money.

The truth is the Gophers are better in every way and it's not close. A loss would be bad news - could see Minnesota with a 10/11/12 seed if that happened.

Nebraska shot 64.8% eFG and lost by 19 points - remarkable. The Huskers have kept games reasonably close (i.e., not total blowouts) against good competition at home this year, but MN losing tonight would be ugly, ugly ugly.

That said, losing at Purdue wouldn't be nearly as bad... not an awful loss.

It's the new and improved Benny Beaver.

I'm an OSU grad. It's new, but not improved. Made a bad logo worse. Should have brought back real Benny. Looks like a saber tooth tiger. Damn Nike!

Did not know that. I am reminded that back in 1983-84 (?) the Gophers beat Iowa in their last game at the old arena AND their 1st at the new Carver-Hawkeye. Very cool!

According to the Oregonian, the youngsters really like the new look. Expect Goldy Gopher to receive a similar makeover within the next few years!

Spot on analysis, again.

Still trying to figure out how a team that had won ONE Big Ten road game (against a REELING Illinois team), and endured a recent stretch of 3-8 which included a 5-game losing streak, should have been a "double digit" favorite over a Nebraska team that had lost ONE Big Ten game at home by double digits, on Senior night, last home game of the season, to close out the Devaney arena. The Huskers are 3-5 in BT games at home and currently sport a better Big Ten record than Northwestern, who also dispatched of the Gophers at home.

Probably not even worth mentioning that Tubby's teams have been a DUMPSTER FIRE in February and March. Perhaps a better way of phrasing it, just what exactly have you seen in the last 60 days of Gopher basketball that would lead you to believe the Gophers should be a double digit road favorite over ANYBODY?

That being said, it WAS a bad loss, but that didn't make me feel bad in the least when I walked to the window and cashed in my ticket, taking the Huskers on the money line.

BeaverGopher, In my mind I am picturing your profession as a dentist, and a damn good one.

I'm happy you made some money. Sure hope you don't blow it all tomorrow night at Augie's.

A couple of things:

1) I wasn't expecting the Gophers coaching staff to begin the game with Andre Hollins on the bench. I didn't expect the normal starting five to only play 122 minutes. Roster utilization has been an issue all season, but last night was flat out bizarre.

2) Remember what was said: "I see the Gophers winning this one comfortably, but keep an eye on their 2-point field goal shooting."... right before the big graphic in the article about 2FG%. 2FG shooting was weak again last night. Under-45% 2FG% for the Gophers and a terrible loss. Dre/Austin/Joe/Rodney combined for 1 of 10 2FG shooting.

Free throw shooting was poor, true, but these guys don't do well when they don't make 2-point shots and their regulars were brutal from the field last night.

It was an awful, unexpected loss. They had no business losing that game. Upsets happen. And that was an upset.

PS - Northwestern was 4-6. The following game they lost yet another player, this time Swopshire, for the year. They're now 4-12. Swop had 16 & 8 against the Gophers.
