I thought I would pass along a some highlights of a conversation I had over the weekend with one of the ACC's top assistant coaches. He was on a recruiting trip in the West Coast and I had a chance to catch up with him to get his perspective.
In his opinion, Tubby Smith is one of the top 10 coaches in the country and Minnesota should feel very fortunate to have him. He has heard that Tubby
likes the Twin Cities (he could not understand how with the weather).
He has watched Colton Iverson and expects him to be a very key to the Gophers future. We should expect him to develop over the summer by getting stronger and working on his footwork. He may never develop pure soft hands but a lot of what we are seeing is the Sophomore jitters and he is thinking too much on the court.
He has watched R3 Sampson for years since high school in Georgia and likes his development.. He expects him to dominate the Big Ten when he is a senior.
He commented on how difficult it is for Tubby or any coach to overcome the loss of big recruits ---Mbwkee and White. He thought Mbwkee would be a force in the Big 10 this year and should have been the Gophers best and most consistent rebounder. He is the horse that the Gophers needed to win some close games by getting a key rebound or put-back hoop in traffic. Regarding White, he thought it was very unfortunate what happened. White is the one sure NBA prospect for the program. It is very difficult to lose a player of his caliber. Also, by March he probably would have been playing his best ball. Although he did not know ant specifics about White's issues, he thought White could have really benefitted from Tubby's influence. However, it is time for the program to move ahead. If Royce comes back, he will be back for the right reasons. If not, then we need to wish him the best. My Comments are that I think Tubby has done a great job cutting the cord while keeping the options open. Also, losing Al Nolan is a killer when the only other true point option is a freshman. He said that Tubby plays a very athletic and complicated defensive scheme that is difficult for newer players to grasp.
Gophers need to win the games they should win and probably beat Wisconsin and Purdue to make the NCAA. It is difficult to make it without some quality victories, especially when you are middle of the pack in your conference.
Overall, he thought we had one of the best and most respected coaches in the country and thinks the basketball future is very bright in Minnesota!
Obviously there are no revelations here, just some very positive comments.
