per Amelia:

Murphy at 3 is a tough sell. Since entering the starting lineup, freshman Jordan Murphy has been forced to play the small forward. It’s not going so well. In the bigger lineup, Murphy is pulled away from the post and has a harder time getting involved in the offense in a meaningful way. Friday, Pitino pointed out that he runs plays aimed at getting Murphy in the post when his talented big man is manning that spot, but what’s more noticeable is Murphy being relegated to the wing, taking three-pointers and or having to make the long commute with the ball to the hoop. A least a couple of the four turnovers he had today came that way. Obviously not all of his struggles in Big Ten play have come because of his position – he’s been in foul trouble in all four games – but he admitted tonight that trying to add the 3 to his pile of responsibilities has been difficult. Meanwhile, the Gophers are losing valuable help on the boards and their only true post scorer.

Go Gophers!!

Sit King, move Murphy to 4 and start one of Gilbert or Buggs at the 3.

I get the offense might decline but to be honest it can't get much worse.

The defense and rebounding will improve more than the offense declines.

I've said that all along. I'd even try him at the 5 spot. He plays bigger than 6'6" because of his reach.

If winning right now is the reason, then he could take Konate's spot at the 5 for the rest of the season.

I get the feeling that some of the lineups we are seeing - including Konate playing major minutes - has to do with Pitino's vision of the team a year or two down the road.

King is worthless, why he sees so many minutes is astounding

+1
King is a net deficit right now. Let him come in for instant offense off the bench. As much as Morris is a frustrating player- he plays hard. King - I'm not seeing that.

Come on guys, seriously?

King has 0 impact on the amount of touches Murphy gets in the post. King plays on the perimeter. There are ways to get Murhpy touches in the post. The only way to solely touch the ball in the post in this offense is from the 5 spot.

To some extent he does, if BK is in the paint and King is too Murphy can't really post.

FWIW. I'd play Murphy at the 5 with Buggs and King. I love that lineup. Rim protection suffers some, but it should improve perimeter D and spread the floor better on offense.

How often is king starting in the post?

I agree, play him at the 5. He's a goddamn matchup problem. We are playing a ****ty zone anyway having a small center won't kill us.

I like that. Except I'd play Buggs that 5 and post him up high at the FT line to pass it to cutters and down low to Murphy. Buggs can protect the rim on D.

This doesn't make any sense. In the Pitino offense everybody just stands around, so Murphy could just as easily stand around closer to the basket if he wants too.

This is correct. I have no idea why Pitino is running his offensive sets emphasizing everything we are weak at. I would like to see sets that get Murphy into positions that play to his strengths rather than his weaknesses. But, I concede to the fact that Pitino knows a lot more about basketball than I do. He has to have a reason, doesn't he?

I don't think the standing is because of Pitino's offense. I think the standing is because people are not trusting each other in the system and ball movement comes to a screeching halt. I think that is one thing that Pitino is upset with.

IALTO! That lineup might not win the MIAC.

I'm not buying that perimeter d would improve. They haven't really shown the ability to defend that at all. I doubt putting smaller players at the 5 will improve that.

If the problem is just with Murphy on offense, have King play small forward on offense and Murphy play inside. Then switch on the defensive end

I agree too. Except whenever Joey gets a smaller defender on him he wants to post up. Which is fine. But it clogs the paint again. IMO putting your only shooter in the paint, regardless of the matchup, just doesn't make sense to me.

Exactly, just have Joey run the perimeter and come off of screens for jumpers. He should leave the lane clear for Murphy and Konate to operate.
