“Voss will be the first Gophers player to win Minnesota Mr. Football since Cade Osterman took home the honor in 2022 with Elk River. He joined the Gophers as a preferred walk-on (PWO), but never appeared in a snap before transferring to North Dakota State after only one season in the Twin Cities. Owatonna running back Jason Williamson was the last Mr. Football to sign with the Gophers as a scholarship player in 2018, but a multitude of injuries cut his career short.”

On the farm with Voss​

Jackson County Central’s Voss was the top recruit for Gophers football coach P.J. Fleck last year. I met with Voss at his farmhouse in Lakefield, Minn., a few miles from the Iowa border.

The backdrop with cornfields and a full basketball court was awesome. It was only a few hours, but I could’ve spent all day chatting with the Voss family in their living room. So many cool stories about the Voss siblings growing up there: Roman, Rudy, and Sadie. And of course, how they used to beat up on little Roman, who would cry to his parents when games got too intense. That was until the seventh grade, when Roman was finally big enough to beat Rudy one-on-one in the backyard.

Vraa had 200 catches for 3,000 yards and 30 TDs in his career for the Bison and would have had similar stats for us. The class of 2010 was a disaster for Brewster re the kids he didn’t offer who would have been great players for us. Vraa, Olsen, Tarpley, Turner, et al would all have been all conference type players for us. Add that to Leidner being by far the second most talented QB his age from Lakeville behind Heid and the misses really hampered us back in that timeframe.
