All Things Gopher Baseball

Regionals and Supers are a blast. Went to many of them in the early 2000's here in Lincoln, even as a non husker fan, it was a special experience. Nearly 10,000 people jammed in Haymarket for several games in those days.

For two innings, Siebert Field had a buzz after a 5-1 lead. Then, USC hitting overwhelmed our pitching. Very few swings and misses on their part. Throw in a couple infield mistakes on back-to-back plays, and it got away from us.

6-1 loss. Caden Aoki was dominant on the mound. Parker Knoll broke up the no hitter in the 8th and Weber Neels broke up the shutout with 2 outs in the 9th.
Kyle Remington was pretty good too but USC came through with the big hit in the 5th with a 2 out grand slam.

Beautiful night at Siebert. Man that grand slam took the air out. Like you said Remington did much better than the stats will show. Let's hope we can salvage a win today.

Another heartbreaker today. USC gets 2 in the 9th and I don't think there was a walk, error, or ball that got to the outfield just crazy unlucky for Minnesota. Now 2 games back of the final BTT spot, must win series from here on out, starts in Lincoln Friday.

Three infield singles and a seeing eye single. That was a gut punch. They pitched well today but offense struggled again.

3rd sweep and now 1-11 at home in conference. Ouch.

Gophers fall 6-3 to North Dakota St. The big blow a 3 run homerun that was reviewed but not overturned and I was a bit shocked. The thing looked way foul.
Bigger story Minnesota continues to really struggle at the plate.
Jack Spanier did play the whole game tonight so that could be a big jolt heading down the stretch.
Hopefully offense can put together a solid effort tomorrow before the big weekend.

Gophers shut out Saint Thomas 11-0. Sutherland with a rare 3 run single (he apparently didn't touch first base and went back to be sure) in 1st on a ball smoked to center field (465 to dead center there), and Mosh with a 3 run home run to right (glad I didn't park on Selby) for final margin. In between, Gophers were aggressive on base paths and Tommies a bit sloppy. Thorsteinson (5 inn), Hemmesch (1) and Dobis (1) combine for the shutout.

Was sitting at the bar and started to talk to a super nice guy. After a bit of talking baseball he said his nephew is Michael Busch, the 1st baseman for the Cubs. I didn't realize he was a MN guy. Played college in North Carolina, but played at Simley.

The Star Trib used to have a great little section called Minnesotans in the Majors/Minors. I read it religiously on Sundays. Now The Trib is Vikings and rest is just AP articles pasted in there. I follow baseball very closely but didn't realize the Cubs starting 1B was a MN guy.

Nice opening win in Lincoln. Larson with the big clutch hit in 10th.

Tough loss today, with Nebraska getting a run in 9th for a walk off 5-4 win. A lot of bullpen arms used today...finale not setting up well.

I don't know what we did to upset the baseball gods but man the amount of weak contact that has landed just out of our guys reach or over the glove or find a hole especially late is crazy.

Late in the year it is time for a guy who is winding down his baseball career to come through with a career day in Thorsteinson.

Gotta keep building that quality depth. Late innings again the killer with our top bullpen arms being down today. Smacked some balls again today and didn't have much to show for it. If you watched the first 2/3 of the last 5 games and said we only got 1 win out of that I'd be puzzled.

I agree, can't seem to finish. The first 6 innings have been great. Many times, an error, walk and a timely hit have cost the Gophers a late inning loss.

Selvig's injury has just killed us as it shortens our quality arms every weekend by about 7 innings. I'm sure it will change due to the portal and other guys leaving but at this point in time the priority in the offseason needs to be:
1. Adding 3-4 quality arms that you can rely on for the weekends.
2. Infield corners
3. Another catching option (I love Neels but he's needs help)

It is so hard with baseball too with the draft. Right now I think we have 36 on the roster and if all goes ahead like it was supposed to the limit would be 34. We are scheduled to have 7 guys out of eligibility in Fitzgerald, Knoll, Perry, Larson, Thorsteinson, Clausen, and Sundquist. Elbeery is a guy who is listed as a senior but looking at his games played it is possible he could get a medical redshirt for last year. We have 10 guys that are supposed to be coming in this summer/fall, 7 freshman pitchers, 2 juco pitchers, and a infielder. There are two guys that could have a chance at being drafted in Berkland and Neels with Neels being less likely imo. There is gonna be a lot to play out with this roster as I have to believe they will want to add a couple at least in the portal so all this means either you aren't bringing in that 10 that have been listed and/or there are gonna be some current guys hitting the portal which when you look at the roster it seems easy to identify a couple guys that haven't done much in 2 seasons.

Another home loss, as Maryland hits 3 home runs and cruises to a 8-2 win. 3 errors officially, and could have been charged with more. Hard to believe we still have just 1 conference win at home.

A day after the Gophers couldn't take advantage of 5 Terrapin errors in an 8-5 loss, today they never lead in an 11-10 loss in the home finale. The bats finally showed some life to rally after being down 9-1, but 10 walks combined with a couple missed opportunities to get outs at home plate spells another L.

Looks like we will finish in 16th place. 1-14 at home in conference play. Even in the dumpster fire season of 2021, we were 4-14 at home. Guessing this is worst home conference record in program history. The hitting has been disappointing. Coming into today, we were last in runs scored in Big 10 play. The second half of season has gone south.

We just didn't have the quality depth to withstand the number of injuries we got hit with this year. Offensively I don't think we had a single game where all 9 of our preseason starters were available. Starts from game 1 with Perry being out the first few weeks, then Fitzgerald is out a while, then the big loss of Spanier, Hokenson misses some time, Knoll the last month and a half and Elbeery too. There were a number of guys really playing through some stuff too especially in weeks 3-7 or so.
On the mound I was really hoping we would add another starter last summer but we weren't able to and then we get hit with Semb deciding to be done with baseball over winter break and we actually held up pretty well for the most part until the Selvig injury and that really unravled things.

It's really unfortunate at how the season swung once the final weekend of March rolled around. It takes away from the fact that much of February and March had some quality outcomes against really tough competition. Going into that Iowa series the Gophers were viewed as having a legitimate chance at the NCAA tournament. My how things have changed.

I agree, a lot of optimism when the B1G season started. All those home loses including the sweep by what ended up being a bad Purdue right off the bat.
