I have not posted here in a long time but wondering if there is a thread that discusses D2 and D3 basketball in Minnesota? If so, a moderator can combine this with that one. On the football forum there is and thought it would be good to have one here. I am more familiar with D3 than D2. The MIAC and UMAC have had some really good games thus far!
 

On the MIAC, I have watched the Augsburg men play a couple of games online.

It's going to be a long season at Si Melby Hall. Auggies just don't have the size, the athletes or the shooters they had last season.

early on, Carleton is off to a 4-0 start. (overall)
Macalester is 5-1,
Hamline and St. Olaf 4-1,
St. John's 4-2.

Johnnies won the Men's Conf title last season with Auggies 2nd and Carleton 3rd.

In the NSIC (D2)
Mankato is off to an 8-0 start.
UMD, Northern State, Moorhead, Sioux Falls and Wayne State are 6-2.

The MIAC and UMAC are 8-8 by my count this year thus far. The MIAC gets the fanfare but the UMAC has turned into a decent basketball conference in recent years. Bethany Lutheran and Crown(Crown gave Macalester their only loss) are off to really good starts. Northwestern is good every year. Below is a UMAC podcast. The guys who do this podcast are very knowledgeable about the league. It's a good listen.

At the D2 level, the NSIC looks really competitive as usual.

Butch had quite the career.

Started out with HS coaching jobs at Fairmont and Mpls Southwest.
was HC at Augsburg College (his alma mater) from 69-73.
then HC at MSU-Mankato from '73-84.
then HC at St. Cloud State from '84 to '97.

from '97 to 2004 he was the AD at SMSU.
from 2004 to 2014, he was the Commissioner of the NSIC.

he's currently serving as a special assistant to the AD at St. Cloud State.

The MIAC looks wide open thus far. I guess I'd have to pick the Johnnies if I was going to pick the champ but the Oles made them look very ordinary.

Minnesota State Dragons lost a battle last night with the Northern State (S.D.) Wolves, 72-71. Wolves made a layup and when the Dragons went down the court to get a game winner they went out of bounds.

Northern State now leads the conference with a 9-1 NSIC record (13-3 overall), with MSUM and UMD in second at 8-2. MSUM is 13-3 overall and UMD is 12-4.

I was at the St Olaf at Carleton game last night. Oles were in control virtually the entire night, had a pretty solid rebounding advantage and the Knights missed lots of contested shots from short range. St Olaf won 82-74.

Good crowd on hand, really solid turnout from Carleton students. I will probably go back Saturday for Carleton's game with Mac.

On the bright side, the St Olaf victory helps out the Gophers RPI.

Northern lost to USF tonight 70-68. Good game. NSU now 9-2., USF 8-3.

I meant "on the bright side for Gopher fans". As a Townie with no ties to either team, when they play each other I just root for a good game or whoever is behind. It was a decent game.

Today I hope the Knights hammer the Scots.
 

As a current Carleton student, I will definitely be at the Carleton v. MAC game today. Been a while since our basketball team has looked as dangerous as they have this year.

Good weekend for the Knights, they hammered the Scots on Saturday and then upended the Johnnies yesterday to regain 1st place.

The Oles are really an enigma, beating the Auggies on the road with a nice 2nd half comeback, but then getting tripped up by the Saints. Uff da. They are only a game back of a 4 way tie for 3rd place, but as of now are in 7th place which would miss the MIAC Playoffs (top 6 advance).

Yeah I watched both games online last night. The Oles have had lots of bad loses in the conference. I hope the Carls will be able to hang on to win the conference. It would be fun to watch MIAC tournament games down there. Very happy for their new head coach.
 

Knights play at Hamline tonight. Last time they matched up the Knights needed a miracle comeback with stupid fouls from Hamline to win on a buzzer-beating 3. Should be a good game
 


I was at the St Mary's @ Carleton game on Saturday, really competitive game. The Cards had beat the Knights earlier this season.

While the Knights led most of the game, they only extended the lead to 11 briefly in the 2nd half . The Cards answered back with a 13-2 run to tie it with 3 minutes left. 60-60.

With about 2 minutes left St Mary's Raheem Anthony, who is the MIAC scoring leader, fouled out in a 1 possession game on a reach in. He's as good of a slasher I have seen in the conference in several decades.

That fired up the Knights bench, but ahead by 3 they did not score and the Cards tied it.

Next 2 possessions neither team scored so the Knights had last possession with 11 seconds, but St Mary's only had 4 fouls so they had 2 to give. Gave the first one with 5 seconds. In bound drive to the lane they were called for a shooting foul with 1 second left. Made both, Carleton wins 65-63.

Having seen each team in the Top 7 (except St John's), there is very little separation, and any given night I would expect a battle.

Carleton at St Olaf tonight, Round 2 in the cross town rivalry for the Goat.

Carleton rolled St Olaf to avenge the defeat a couple of weeks ago. Never a contest, 73-56. Both games the team that made 2 mile trip over the Cannon River got the W.

Knights retain the Goat. They also have a 2 game lead with the Johnnies falling to the Cobbers.
