All Things Chet Holmgren Recruitment Thread (Class of 2021, Gophers Have Offered)

Can chets frame handle the physicality of the big ten?

Why would that matter? The ultimate goal is to win an NCAA title. The Big10 hasn't won it all in 20+ years. The Big10 was the best conference during the regular season and that resulted in two #1 seeds and two #2 seeds. Yet, only 1 of those seeds made it past the first weekend. Don't fault the young man for putting himself in the best position to succeed.

If anything, be frustrated with Minnesota's athletic department. They took a risk and hired Pitino solely off his name and it didn't pan out. They have done nothing to improve the antiquated Williams Arena and they simply don't have the budget to compete for even upper middle tier coaches. They have taken another risk on an unproven head coach in Ben Johnson but I'd rather they do that and try to strike gold, then hiring a middle-aged retread.

I've never really seen a guy built like him do that well in college. In many ways he's like Tayshaun Prince, Tyson Chandler, and Shaun Livingston where the scouts drool because they are projecting further out.

College basketball for Suggs and Holmgren was only going to be a one-year proposition. You raise a very valid concern.

Playing for gonzaga is lame because 80 percent of their games are cupcakes
Gonzaga absolutely benefits from being the Big Dog in a weak conference. However, if they were to move to one of the power conference I still think they would be one of the better teams in college basketball.

But they certainly wouldn't blow out all their opponents by double digits the way they do in their weak conference. And there is no chance they would have made it to the NCAA Championship game undefeated if they had to play a tougher schedule.

I was told on here it is easy to turn a program around. The poster included links. Maybe we just send them to Coyle so he can share with all the gopher coaches?
You know very well that I did not say it was easy to turn around a program. I was responding to a comment that a shit program is always shit. There are numerous instances of programs and companies turning themselves around into good performers. I said it was easy to research that fact.

The Zag used a very specific formula in order to rise up the ladder and gain the overrated status that they enjoy today. Of course it is based upon adequately good coaching, but it all starts with the players. Gonzaga was able to build a successful pipeline to Europe and get much better players than they could attract in the US. With the best players in their conference, they dominated and continued to win the automatic bid for that conference. They continued at that stage and piled up a string of NCAA tournament appearances and a few wins here and there in the tourney. This inflated record attracted some better US players and that helped them become an even better team. Suggs was a breakthrough for them in actually getting a top tier recruit. This year they have expanded upon that and look to be a top level team. But let us all not forget that it all began by having a decent coach, getting hidden gems of players that were overlooked by most everybody else (European) and playing in a weak conference that and inflated their record. The current Zags would be a top end P5 conference team, they would not be one of the best teams in the country.

Corey Brewer did pretty well in college

Rickert was so damn good in high school. Under appreciated for sure.
I'd take a Dusty Rychart over a one-and-done'er any day of the week...

I don't care that Chet didn't stay home. Not really a big deal, in the grand scheme of things. I just don't want the next McKinley Wright or Dawson Garcia to leave...

Now that his college choice has been made I feel better about sharing my thoughts.
  • A player like this rarely makes a big impact on their college team because they aren't around long enough. Examples include Kris Humphries or Markelle Fultz and Ben Simmons, both who were the #1 overall pick in the NBA Draft from teams that didn't make the NCAA tournament. Outside of basketball we have the local case of Casey Mittelstadt. Or Kyle Okposo. Back to basketball, even Joel Przybilla.
  • That soft conference is a WAY better place to protect your draft status than B1G where the season is a grind.
  • I really don't see him dominating college basketball because of his frame. He has all the tools to project as a "unicorn" or "stretch 4" or whatever they want to call him in the NBA. That's his future. His present isn't as promising, in my view. He won't be a ball dominant guy that averages 20. He won't post up and take the banging down low. He'll be great, tantalizing watchers with his array of skills. Putting the team on his back and playing clutch down the stretch? I don't see it.
I wish him well. Love how far basketball in Minnesota has come. Long-term I don't see not getting (or getting) Chet as critical to the future of the Gophers.
See Suggs, Jalen. See Anthony, Carmelo. See Duke's last national title
Gonzaga played more nationally televised games against high level comp than almost anyone. That's a false take.

Call me crazy but part of me thinks chet is a bust 5 star prospect, still think he is a good player
No way he is a bust. He has played against the top players in the country and has outplayed them.
Ask Steph Curry.

Him going to Gonzaga was the best move for him and for the Gophers, hope it works out for the kid!

I didn’t say I wouldn’t? You’re just making random arguments that have nothing to do with what I posted.

Kevin Durant was close to 7' in high school and weighed 204. He played well in college.

This kid is multidimensional. He's a point small forward who can shoot 3s, drive the lane, dribble, makes other players better...I'd love to have had his talents but not necessarily his height, I prefer bring 6'.

I think its time to put a fork in the Holmgren banter, last time I looked, this is Gophers Basketball Forum, dedicated to players who will wear the maroon & gold. If you desire to continue ranting about a player who rejected the Gophers, I think one should go to where he desired to play, Gonzaga, and their message board...Holmgren is a dead issue in regards to Gopher Basketball, time to write about future local players who will be proud to represent and play within the state and build Minnesota into a Big Ten & National contender..........!

Okay, enough of the hate on Suggs for crying. I really wish all our players care as much about winning as he does. He put his heart into the year. I get being glad they lost though.

Porn pup!! If we can only discuss guys who want to be gophers gonna have to shutdown a ton of threads.

I guess he's not a fan of "gritty" basketball. So there should be a lot of happy posters who only want gritty basketball players to play for the gophers.

Per Star Tribune:

Holmgren said Gonzaga's style of play was a big factor in the decision and also fits his long-term goal of eventually playing in the NBA.

"It's a perfect fit, the way they play in space and play with pace," he said. "I don't want to end up getting bogged down and stuck in the half-court stuff. I want to get out and run, get out and play fast. It's more of an NBA-type style of play, which I want to learn and excel at."
