All Things 2026 Transfer Portal Thread

Still waiting for Kyan Evans. Is he going to see if his new coach wants him? Really looking like Llyod is the top choice, further AZ makes in the tourney the harder it will be for him to leave

He took awhile to enter the portal last year too. I don’t think UNC will have a spot for him whether he wants one or not.

Portal doesn't officially open until after the tournament is complete, right?

What is the fascination with Kyan Evan’s all about as a top target? Is it just because he landed a spot at UNC?

He was a 10 ppg guy as a sophomore at CSU and was completely ineffective at UNC this year as a junior. There seem to be a lot more high priority targets already in the portal to spend resources on.

Totally agree. He played well in the tourney last year and turned that into a payday, but he’s not that strong with the ball or defensively. he wouldn’t be promised anything here, and wasn’t last year. I wouldn’t be disappointed to get him but not as strong as Asuma or Willis on defense or with the ball. Willis scored 17 a game year before he came here and was second team all-conf, and 20 year before and player of year. The few games he played here for Niko he wasn’t looking to score as primary ball handler and played great, strong defense. We missed his defense and ball handling significantly.

Oh no, a guy like that could never be a great player on the Gophers!
That’s the exact lazy comparison that people seem enamored with. Tyson is a 6’7” wing who actually proved sustained success at Belmont before he went to UNC. Their stats aren’t even close to comparable.

Evans is a dime a dozen in the portal. A skinny 6’2”senior who’s never averaged more than 10ppg, doesn’t rebound, and doesn’t get to the FT line.

We need length and scoring, he brings neither.

Evans… I take for one year in a second.. he is quick and can handle the ball… I take him over Willis.. IMO

Ok cool, I just thought it was funny you made that specific statement. You want a deeper comparison? Cade's shooting % Sophomore year before UNC: 49%, Kyan's was 47%, from 3 Cade was 46%, Kyan was 44%. Kyan's rebound and Assists per game 3/3, Cade's were 6/2. CSU plays better opponents on average than Belmont. I'm not saying Kyan's going to be an All-Big 10 player but his stats are legit, he struggled at UNC, as Cade did but has the perepherals show potential to be good on a big stage in the right system. He didn't have a chance to play much his freshman year and got his chance his second year where he excelled in the 2nd half of the year and in the tournament, to dismiss him as a throwaway is silly, there's a reason UNC was after him in the first place, same as Cade, the situation has to be right and I think that may just be in Minnesota with a coach who knows how to use him.

Could care less about him we have much more pressing needs then another very mediocre guard! However I will obviously trust in Niko's judgement! If he views him as a priority and wants him then we he goes into the portal, if he does, by all means let's go get him!

Buy Low🤷‍♂️

Hopefully if the Gophs can keep the guys they want back the staff can be more selective of who they take in the portal. After watching how this years cobbled together roster was able to implement Medveds style of play I have full confidence in this staff. It’s been a long time since that’s been the case here.

One thing is certain- we can't pay a bundle for him. I am all for getting him as a guy who has a chance to help. We need to spend our dough a couple of impact guys and I think Niko can get them. If Kyan is our third or fourth best portal guy- that would be terrific.

I agree 1st priority is size up front then a legit shooting guard who can also penetrate. We have 3 openings correct as of now, we lose Tyson, Reynolds, Turner and Omodt they are replaced by 3 recruits, that leaves one opening if the rest return!

I think it is also worth noting the trajectory that Kyan Evans was on. Benchwarmer as a freshman, shot 41% and 30% from 3PT. Was peaking in February and March as a sophomore. Shot 6/9 3PT and scored 23 points with 4 assists and no turnovers against Memphis to get them to that Maryland game. If he had stayed at CSU with Niko as a junior, what could he have done?

He started every game his sophomore year. November was his worst month, in 7 games played 24 mpg, shot 4/21 3PT for 19%, shot 4/7 from FT, 3.3 assists. He improved every month of the season and in March Niko was leaning on him more heavily. He averaged 32 mpg, shot 49% FG and 60% from 3PT (24/40), got to the line more (13/16), and averaged 3 assists.

He actually went from 16 turnovers in those 7 games in November to 13 turnovers in the 8 games in March during the MWC/NCAA stretch. He shot 45% 3PT and 85% FT on the season.

I remember hearing that he was a lock to come here last year, before UNC came in with something like $2MM which we couldn't match. If he wants to come here and play for a lot less and be part of our guard rotation with Asuma and Willis then I would like to have him. Niko will use him so much more effectively than Hubert Davis did.

Two, I thought there are three players on scholarship graduating, Tyson, Reynolds, and Gizzi. Turner and Omodt have to be filled via the portal.

Well we would only be his 4th school...god its crazy out there now.
Yeah, for sure. Some kids are strictly chasing that next bigger paycheck and make as much as they can. If you are realistic and realize you have an extremely small chance of ever sniffing a pro roster in the US. Then, if you could pull down 2-3 million in college, why not set yourself up well for a nice start in life?

Near as I can tell...Asuma, Grove, Durkin, Shinholster, JCJ, Vaihola, Willis and Stephens could return? That's 8 guys but Willis is listed as a senior and Vaihola as a red shirt senior....so do those two have eligibility? Medical waiver granted?
plus 3 freshman incoming ... that's 11
You get 15 scholarships...that's four spots available and I don't think the 8 are set in stone, so maybe there is another spot or two to recruit to from the portal.
Then there is Max Lorenson...if he stays it is one less spot.
Hard to know for sure what the available roster numbers really are.

Feels unlikely that Stephens is back, as far as Willis and Vaihola, the assumption is they'll apply for medical redshirts but it's certainly up in the air. I expect 4-6 available slots for transfers.

Based on the current landscape, both Willis and Vaihola have bullet proof claims for another year and could probably win a lawsuit against the NCAA if not allowed another year. They'll be back.

Only if its for a reserve role. He shot 32% from the field this year. That's generationally horrible. No wonder his minutes shrunk throughout the season.

For comparison purposes, Tyson shot 29% from three in his one year at Cheat. Niko chose to offer him despite the “generationally bad” shooting percentage. I don’t follow Cheat closely but for them to under perform so badly multiple years suggests some dysfunction. Dysfunction and poor coaching might impact stats.

Hubert wasn’t fired for nuthin

I understand where you're coming from but as I followed Evans throughout the season, he rarely played more than 5-7 minutes per game with very limited shot attempts and it's impossible for any player to find their groove with those types of limitations placed on their game.

As NYC pointed out above, you have to look pretty hard at Davis for his role in stifling the growth and productivity of both Tyson and Evans. There appeared to be a high level of dysfunction within the UNCheat program that shouldn't be ignored.

I'm taking Evans all day every day with his advanced understanding of Niko's systems but where I agree with you most is he can't be our #1 target in the portal or blow our wad on his NIL.

An elite defensive rebounder and adequate outside shooter for a big man. No idea what situation he's looking for, but a rotation of Dawes, JCJ, Vaihola, and Grove would fit the playing style and provide some matchup flexibility.

Don't forget Mpoyi.
