All Things 2025-26 Minnesota Twins Off-Season Thread

The New York Mets are interested in trading for Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Meanwhile, the Twins are fond of Mets pitching prospect Jonah Tong, reports Heyman.

Ryan would instantly become the No. 1 starter in a Mets rotation that is projected to include Kodai Senga, Nolan McLean, Clay Holmes, Sean Manaea, and David Peterson for the 2026 season
My post 217 contained a link regarding trading Buck to the Mets.

From the article -

The New York Mets are looking to improve their run prevention this offseason and one way they can do so is by upgrading the center field position.

The Mets already made one big trade recently, swapping left fielder Brandon Nimmo for second baseman Marcus Semien. They're now being predicted by Bleacher Report to swing a blockbuster deal with the Minnesota Twins for Byron Buxton.

Per Bleacher Report's trade proposal, the Mets will receive Buxton, an All-Star center fielder, in exchange for top prospects Jett Williams, Jacob Reimer and Jonathan Santucci.

This is a trade the Mets would likely make given the level of star power that Buxton brings to the table. The Twins would also be getting a plethora of young talent that is close to the major leagues.

Buxton is under team control for three more years at $45 million total, which is a team-friendly deal. He would need to waive his no-trade clause, but he may be willing to do so now after the Twins traded away a significant amount of talent.

Seems like a statement purely to drive up the bidding price a little bit.

Let's see which players show up at Twins Fest next month.

Plenty of tickets available, I am sure.

They have a list of confirmed appearances on the website. Ryan and Lopez are on the list. Buxton is not.

The plan is to hold on to them for now, per Gleeman, for the first half to see if they’re competitive.

If someone gives them n offer they can’t Marlon Brando, then bag your bags gents.

Charley Walters is reporting that one of the Twins limited partners is a credit and investment firm, Varde Partners. At first glance, doesn't look like they'd be super interested in in spending whatever it takes to put a winning team on the field.

Awesome.

Just what I wanted...a group of distressed asset specialists looking to turn a buck after the lockout.

As Breakin' wrote, they are not there to invest to make anything better, they just know that the team will not go bankrupt, and will make a profit after the lockout when the team sells to an actual buyer/owner.

Joey Gallo will kill both birds with one stone....

These owners can not make up their minds. If they’re going to severely limit payroll, just tear it down. Trade your valuable assets and get some future value.

This way they probably let their valuable assets walk in free agency for no return or trade them at a later date for significantly less return.

This half measure doesn’t make them a serious team.

Not sure he's much of an upgrade over Clemons....
Or get Wallner a 1B mitt and get Jenkins or Rodriguez into the OF. This guy's like Carlos Santana, with much less to offer defensively. But he does somehow have a Silver Slugger award on his resume (2022 as the NL DH).

The Dodgers will pay more to next year's roster in 2038 and 2039 ($100M+ in deferred payments each year) than the Twins will pay to next year's roster altogether.

I do not get why players are agreeing to this. They're losing money by deferring so much so far out.

At this point I hope the Dodgers win like 4 in a row because I think that's what it will take for MLB to finally see how stupid the whole system is.

They want to win rings. Seems effective so far.

Here’s data and thoughts from Gleeman’s article in The Athletic regarding the signing -

Bell, 33, was arguably the best free-agent hitter fit for the Twins. His defense is a weakness, but his power, patience and relatively low strikeout rates have led to above-average production on a consistent basis.

He is a good fastball hitter who typically runs a low strikeout rate, a high walk rate and an ability to barrel the baseball. While Bell has always been an above-average hitter, by OPS, last season felt like something of a bounce-back year, as he surged after a slow start to bat .282/.364/.483 (.846 OPS) over his last 79 games.

Bell’s 12 percent barrel rate with the Washington Nationals this past season was his best since 2019, the year Bell was an All-Star.

Baseball Reference provides “similarity scores” for each player that provide comparisons to current and former players with similar results at each age. Through 24 years old, when Bell finished third in NL Rookie of the Year voting, his closest comparison was Carlos Delgado. At 25, it was David Ortiz. At 26, Greg Walker. At 27 and 28, Tino Martinez. At 29, Walker again. For the past two years, the player most similar to Bell is Adam Lind, the longtime lefty slugger.

That feels about right. Lind had 200 homers and a 112 OPS+. Bell has 193 homers and a 114 OPS+. As far as hitters-for-hire go, you could do far worse. You know what to expect.

———-

He’s better from the left side of the box, as Switch Hitter, so he should get most of the ABs at first.

While your concern for the Díaz family finances is touching, it appears a bit misguided, as Edwin has already pocketed $87.5M in his career, prior to inking the Dodger 🐶 deal.

They won’t be flipping over the couch cushions anytime soon🤓
