Anthony Edwards needs help, but will he get it?​

At first glance, you might think there had been a level of panic within the Minnesota Timberwolves during their somewhat-sluggish start.

After reaching the Western Conference finals for the second consecutive time, they started the season just 10-8 before winning five of their past six games (they’re 15-9; sixth in the West). For a team that has legitimate title-contending aspirations, and a franchise centerpiece in Anthony Edwards who was looking to take yet another leap, that’s enough to cause some concern. Except for one thing: They’ve been here before.

The T-Wolves started just 8-10 last season, and were just 13-11 at this same 24-game mark, before finding their groove in the second half (they won 17 of their last 20 games after starting 32-29). Translation: They aren’t about to make an ill-advised move in response to the early returns.

Still, president of basketball operations Tim Connelly has been one of the most aggressive executives in the league for quite some time. As evidenced by the Durant pursuit in the summer, when the Timberwolves took a long, hard look at bringing him to town before he was traded to the Rockets, Connelly always seems to be in on the big stuff. More recently, the Timberwolves were among those teams monitoring the Ja Morant situation with the Memphis Grizzlies (though that move appears very unlikely). And lest anyone forget, his controversial choice to bring Rudy Gobert to Minnesota in the summer of 2022 had everything to do with the team success that came next.

The Timberwolves’ due-diligence approach will likely lead to all sorts of rumors about their squad between now and the deadline, with most of them involving point guards. To that end, the Chicago Sun-Times reported this week that Minnesota inquired about Chicago Bulls point guard Coby White. Our Jon Krawczynski reported that there’s “nothing cooking” there right now in terms of active talks.

A Wolves source confirmed that there is legitimate interest in White, but the 25-year-old’s looming free agency appears to be a significant hindrance to a possible trade. He’s making $12.8 million in the final year of his deal and is widely expected to seek a major raise this summer. But the fear of that unknown, it seems, means this is the kind of “rental” situation that drops the price point precipitously and creates a negotiating gap between the two sides.

If there’s another cold streak in Minnesota when early February rolls around, however, those phones will most certainly heat up. And Connelly, even more than most, is always willing to take a call.

I keep waiting for the Pistons to wilt but it hasn't happened yet. They're fun to watch and Duren's development has been impressive. They will also have the chance to sign a stud in FA with Tobias Harris' huge contract coming off the books.

Hmmm...why would Vegas remove the betting odds for the O/U season win totals for both MIL and MIN? Ladies and gentlemen...we got him. 😉

If you’re wondering how likely a Giannis trade happens, sportsbooks have removed the O/U win totals from the market for the Bucks … and the Timberwolves.

Silly speculation. There is zero chance the Wolves have the ammo to get Giannis without Ant in the deal.

DAL offered Doncic for Giannis after the Wolves declined their offer for Ant. I bet the Bucks are kicking themselves right now.

I'd love to have 26 year old Giannis. Giving up the personnel to make a deal work for 31 year old Giannis with his huge contract and his 60 games a year body would be a massive mistake.

The Wolves seem to be looking at various ways to upgrade a thin wing rotation. While it still seems more likely they stand pat, they only have a couple of ways to go if they want to make a move of any significance. The Wolves could take bigger, more ambitious swings that would involve the contracts of either Donte DiVincenzo, Naz Reid or both. Failing that, however, they may settle for smaller moves that would hinge on Conley’s expiring $10.7 million salary being part of the swap — especially with Bones Hyland’s recent play solidifying the backcourt depth situation.

Minnesota has no draft picks to trade as a sweetener but could use rookie center Joan Beringer as bait and return a player who makes $15 million or less.

I’ve read at least a few times that Conley has some handshake agreement that he won’t be traded. Got me if it’s true or not.

It's a very strong "rumor" that Connelly made this assurance to him when he re-signed last year. Supposedly, the Conley family loves MIN and he didn't want to uproot his family again and be away from them for nine (9) months.

With Conley's lingering Achilles injury, I wouldn't be surprised if he agreed to a trade and getting bought out by his new team or medically retiring.

Given the guys all love Mike, I don’t think they’re going to move him for the exact reason of they want to win one for him (even as unlikely as that looks).

Could be, for sure...but KAT was beloved in the locker room, too. We already hold a roster spot for the NBA Towel Waving Champion in Joe Ingles. How many non contributors can we carry if winning a Title is truly our goal?

Ant's closest friends on the team are Jaden and Naz but there's no doubt that Conley's presence on the roster is important to everyone. You can see how all the guys gravitate towards him.

I could see Conley having an agreement with the other team to retire after the trade and eventually returning to the Wolves as an assistant coach.
