All Things 2024 College Football D2 and D3 Thread

Jacks kickin' Incarnate Word 41-14 mid 4th. Hopefully my Coyotes (alum) also prevail! Daggers to NDSU!

Holy crap. Bethel completes a 30-yard Hail Mary with time running out to win it, but the refs call it back for a ghost holding to end game.

Susquehanna scores TD on 4th & goal from the 1 yd line with 39 seconds left in game, goes up 24-21.

Bethel has ball at their own 27 yd line...
....PI on Susq gives Bethel ball at 45 yd line with 11 sec left.....
...Bethel completes pass to 30 yd line w/ 5 sec left. Then...Pass into end zone complete for apparent TD - BUT holding penalty on Bethel. Ref says Game over. Now a melee on field....
Ref says unsportsmanlike penalty on Bethel, but Bethel gets one more play from their own 45 yd line.....Bethel tries lots of laterals play but loses yard and game is finally over.

Wackiness.

Valdosta State (Ga.) defeated Minnesota State-Mankato today 35-21. They are now going to play for their fifth national title, having won previously in 2004, 2007, 2012 and 2018.

They will face the winner of the Ferris State (Mich.) Vs. Slippery Rock (Penn.) game. It would be Slippery Rock's first title game appearance while Ferris State is seeking its third national championship, having won in 2021 and 2022.

MSU alum. Proud of those boys.

Phantom hold or a real hold?

If you interested in seeing the ending of the Bethel game. Seems like some close calls really helped out their opponent. You can see what they called a hold - it is a shame - had no impact on play. Looks like Bethel kid was helping out and fell down and hence the jersey grab. Most officials would have not called anything on the last play of the game. Real shame.

Yeah, that was a real chickensh** way of ending the game. To make matters worse, the refs incorrectly call the game over then called unsportsmanlike conduct on Bethel for heated protest, so Bethel had to run the last play from their own 45 instead of the opponents 40 which would have allowed another hail mary pass. Sometimes the refs need to make it not all about themselves.

Regardless, I've personally seen Bethel benefit from game ending home cooking by the refs, so karma usually comes around.

I think it was the way the play unfolded - if a hold/tug like that takes place in the middle of the line, or in the middle of a group of players, it probably doesn't get called.

but in this case, with the field spread out, the play took place out in the open. everyone (including the refs) clearly saw the Bethel player's arm reach out and at least appear to grab or try to grab the jersey. and I think the extension of the arm makes it look worse than it actually was in terms of impacting the play.

if the penalty was not called, the Susquehanna people would have been screaming that they got hosed.

and yes, the refs handled it very poorly. once the ref declared "game over," then no more penalties should have been called.

elsewhere, the final four in FCS will be fun. I'm rooting for South Dakota to advance, because I know some of the Bouman family.

Really dislike NDSU stemming from the asshole fans who were by us when they came here so really cheering for the Jackrabbits next week. Nonetheless, it should be a heck of a game.

So this is going to be the third national title meeting between Valdosta State and Ferris State. Valdosta State won in 2018 49-47 and Ferris State won in 2021 58-17.

Ooh - big MIAC news -

according to Pat Reusse, Bethel's star Safety, Matt Jung, has entered the transfer portal. Reusse says Jung has an offer from Washington State, and "more than one" offer from MAC schools.

Reusse is pretty tied into the MIAC and Bethel, so I trust him on this report.

Jung is a heck of an athlete - so I don't think this is going to be a widespread trend - but it is something to see a D3 kid jumping up to D1 - and I assume there are NIL considerations.

@MaxyJR1 had a bunch of info on this in the portal thread. There's so much more public exposure now in D3/D2 then there used to be (streaming) that I bet this happens more often going forward.

MIAC teams are dreaming. SJU lives on their past in the 60's when they won a few titles, they have not won a title in over 23 years. That Central is a complete team.
