All good, I mostly point it out because I think this was one of the best all around roster assemblies I’ve seen/been a close fan of. A lot of circumstance, development, build up, and timing occurred.

The Minnesota transplant in me wants to make sure that Lakeville doesn’t get any credit for the final fours, though :)

Illinois (Kaminsky, Brust, Dukan (kinda) was over represented those years. In state (Dekker and Koenig) was huge, and Hayes came from another Midwestern state (Ohio). Just happens that the pinnacle of Ryan’s career did not include Minnesotans, although they certainly succeeded in his system prior to 2014.

We got caught and punished for our cheating. How many schools have made the Final Four and cheated(not caught and punished) to get there?
We had a couple others that were Final Four caliber, but didn't make it.

Seems like WI is getting enough of the in-state talent to be successful. Johnny Davis, WI recruit, 10th overall 2022 nba draft. Sam Dekker, WI native, 2015 nba 18th pick. Compare WI to MN records in B10 and NCAA for the last 20+ years. Plus a slew of MN talent. As a season ticket holder of the MN gopehrs BB since the mid 80's, it's embarrassing AND annoying.

You named two unicorn players in the past 10 years. How about Amir Coffey and Daniel Oturu? Coffey has already had a more successful NBA career than Dekker.

Great post. They have lost a ton of in state talent but have made up for it under recruited out of state players that were developed very well. Frank K., Happ, Alando Tucker, Hayes and all the way back to Vershaw, Jon Bryant, Leurer, Jordan and Kam Taylor. Scouting, coaching, defense, efficiency meant a great deal of winning. That is what i want here. We have a chance now.
 



For those of interested in actual 2023 recruiting updates. Maybe the rest of you could take your in-state vs out-of-state topic that has been debated ad nauseam to it's own thread and not ruin this one.

"KU assistant Kurtis Townsend has been the lead recruiter for Evans and, according to Perry, their relationship is a big part of the reason that Evans plans to visit Lawrence in a couple of months.

"Perry told Wildeboor that KU, TCU, Minnesota, California Riverside, Missouri, Florida State, San Diego State, Texas, Oklahoma State and Georgetown have shown the most interest in Evans thus far and that KU, Minnesota and TCU were “probably the three main schools.”

It seems like the Gophers are in this mix.

Is something up with Evans if he’s supposedly a top 15 player in the country and has 1 blueblood and then 4-5 2nd tier or lower major offers? Just style of the game?

Kansas: "They have a really good program there. I would have a chance to go there and develop as a player and as a person."

Minnesota: "Right now, the style of play sticks out. I also like the area because it is going to be an easier place for me to stay grounded and develop without me worrying about too many outside distractions. I will also be able to show that I can make an impact at a higher level if I am given the chance."

TCU: "I talk to the coaching staff about their culture, how they play the game, and how they will approach the season in upcoming years. They want to make a deeper run in the tournament. I talk to Jamie Dixon, Tony Benford, and Duane Broussard and I am really starting to build a relationship with them."

His rating jumped. Read in an article that He came to BBall later, and he was on the losing end of a viral video. It really motivated him to work on his game. Apparently (I’ve never seen him play, so this hearsay), his skills jumped signifcantly in the year after that video.

I think his 5* rating is a few months old (May, if memory serves me).

Yeah he was a little outside the top 100 when we offered. We might have been his first high major offer.

With USC and UCLA to the B1G, one would think that conference games in Southern California would be a plus that Minnesota could offer that TCU and Kansas cannot.

I know the coaches/staff have a better idea but this is why its so hard to know, are we going for 2 guys? 3? would we take 4?

But yes this (heck even 3 of the 4) I would call a "game changing" class.

Hopefully UCLA and USC don't come calling. Play in the Big Ten without having to move away from home. Unless that is something that he is looking to do. Might also have the benefit of him being a 'Bateman' like character who puts stock into loyalty and appreciates the Minnesota coaching staff for offering early.

Five-star California 7-footer Dennis Evans could've transferred to any prep school in the country for his senior year.

Evans turned down teams that produced No. 1 NBA draft picks and won national championships to stay at Riverside Hillcrest to finish high school. He's different.

But the 7-1 shot-blocking sensation is strongly considering taking his talents far from home to play college basketball.

The 17-year-old big man prodigy from Southern California is being recruited by defending national champion Kansas. But Ben Johnson and the Gophers are serious contenders to land arguably the top rim protector in high school hoops.

"He's definitely going to visit Minnesota," Evans' AAU coach Elvert "Kool-Aid" Perry told the Star Tribune. "He might end up going to Minnesota to be completely honest. Ben and [assistant Marcus Jenkins] have done a tremendous job recruiting Dennis."

Evans, who blocked 16 shots in a game last season, ranks 13th and 27th in the 2023 class by Rivals.com and 247Sports.com, respectively.

The Gophers have an advantage in recruiting Evans because of his relationship with Minnesota freshman and California native Jaden Henley. They developed through the same Inland AAU program. Henley, a 6-7 guard from Ontario, is competing for a starting spot.

"They both will be stars," Perry said. "It would be interesting to see them together. They're best friends. They played together. They grew up together."

Gophers were interested in Kapke early but I get the sense he was hoping for a WI offer and eventually the Gophers felt better going in other directions.
The WI offer didn't come so Butler it is.
