All Things 2018 Gophers Basketball Recruiting Thread

Welcome Class of ‘18! Should be an exciting season and I think the combination of on court product and ‘19 openings sets us up wonderfully!

How many schollies does this leave us with, assuming Carr is not eligible this season?

best part is we can finally start focusing on the 2019 class and beyond!!

STrib: Grad transfer Brock Stull could be the missing piece for the Gophers

Brock Stull had a lot of options to play at the Power Five level for his senior year, but he chose to follow the path of a former teammate from Wisconsin-Milwaukee to Minnesota.

Stull's commitment Tuesday to play for the Gophers could be the missing piece for helping them bounce back from a 15-17 season. Two seasons ago, former UW-Milwaukee guard Akeem Springs' impact in one season with the Gophers led to the first NCAA tournament under Richard Pitino.

Stull, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound guard, averaged 13.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and shot 37.9 percent from three-point range for the Panthers as a junior last season. As a graduate transfer like Springs, Stull can play immediately but has only one year to make his presence felt.

Stull said getting to play in the Big Ten was “very special” for him having grown up in Illinois.

The Rockford, Ill. native made his decision while visiting the U campus Tuesday. Stull, who received interest from Xavier, Virginia, North Carolina State and Butler, gets to play again for his former Milwaukee coach Rob Jeter, one of Minnesota's new assistants.

“Being a Midwest kid, it’s all you want to do and for a really good team,” Stull told the Star Tribune about being in the Big Ten. “(It was) nice to get to spend time with those guys and get reunited with Jeter.”

per Sid:

• It will be interesting to see how well the new transfers that Gophers basketball coach Richard Pitino has recruited are implemented this season, and who will be allowed to play right away. The latest transfer was guard Brock Stull from Wis.-Milwaukee. Xavier, one of the top teams in the country last season, was also after Stull but the Gophers won out. Stull averaged 13.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game last year.

per Marcus:

Stockman’s departure leaves Minnesota coach Richard Pitino with another scholarship available for the 2018-19 season. Former DeLaSalle and North Dakota guard Geno Crandall visited Minnesota’s campus last week. Crandall, a 6-3 senior, is a graduate transfer and immediately eligible. He’s reportedly considering Minnesota, Xavier, Gonzaga and Colorado State.

Pitino also has high interest in another former Islander star Reid Travis, who is a graduate transfer from Stanford. Travis appears to have narrowed down his choices to Kentucky and Villanova. The 6-8 All-Pac 12 forward is visiting Kentucky this week.

Well Jalen Travis just camped with the gophers. I'd say Reid is a lock to Minnesota!

I'm not a huge Reid Travis fan but I'm a bit more optimistic he may come back home.

They are all pretty big and strong, but man, this kid has a serious football build. I know he plays hoops, but doesn't get much run on varsity, yet. The other brother (youngest?) looks to be on track to be a huge kid too.

I would think Reid would have a decent shot to become a college hooper to the NFL guy.

With the addition of Stull, feels like we already have enough guards. Interesting that we are now pretty thin in the front court.....

We still don't have a true backup PG. Murphy, Curry, Oturu and Jarvis is fine as a 4 man front court rotation.

Spokesman Recorder: North Dakota grad transfer Geno Crandall planning visit to Gonzaga

Gonzaga is in the mix for North Dakota graduate transfer Geno Crandall.

Crandall is expected to visit Gonzaga’s campus next weekend, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein. The 6-foot-4 guard will first visit Xavier this weekend and Colorado State next week.

The Zags are well aware of Crandall, who made four 3-pointers and poured in 28 points in an 89-83 overtime loss to Gonzaga at the McCarthey Athletic Center in December. Crandall also had five assists, three steals and seven turnovers while playing all 45 minutes.

North Dakota, 30-point underdogs, led by eight with 4 minutes left in regulation before the Zags rallied behind Josh Perkins and Zach Norvell Jr.

Crandall would be an intriguing addition to a Zags team projected in the top five in numerous preseason polls. Gonzaga could use an additional ball-handler, playmaker and 3-point threat. Crandall checks all of those boxes.

Crandall is also experienced with 90 starts in three seasons at North Dakota. Crandall averaged 16.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists last season. He made 42 percent of his 3-point attempts. His career averages are 14.3 points and 36.7 percent beyond the arc.

Crandall also expressed interest in New Mexico State and Minnesota shortly after he announced he was leaving North Dakota.

per Shooter:

It’s looking like highly-sought Geno Crandall, the former DeLaSalle-North Dakota basketball star, could choose Xavier over Minnesota because of his relationship with former Gophers assistant Ben Johnson, the ex-Gophers assistant now with the Musketeers.

Colorado State was the clear favorite for the 6-4 point guard, who is visiting Gonzaga this weekend, but doesn’t have a scholarship available.

Grand Forks Herald: UND's Geno Crandall nearing transfer decision

Outgoing UND men's basketball standout Geno Crandall is close to announcing his next destination.

Crandall, who has elected to graduate transfer, will announce Thursday whether he will play at the University of Minnesota, Gonzaga or Xavier, according to multiple Twin Cities media reports.

The Minneapolis native, who went to DeLaSalle High School, led UND with 16.6 points per game last year and collected a Big Sky Conference-best 67 steals.

Crandall has yet to graduate from UND, but the all-Big Sky guard is taking summer courses to finish his degree.

Crandall, who's 6-foot-4 and 180 pounds, is UND's 14th all-time leading scorer, seventh all-time in assists and fourth all-time in steals.

He shot 41.7 percent from the 3-point line and 72.8 percent from the foul line a year ago as UND finished 12-20 overall.

Crandall, who helped UND to the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance as a sophomore, started his junior season with a 41-point performance against Troy in Hawaii, which is a school record in the Division I era.

per Marcus:

The fireworks were on July 4th, but graduate transfer Geno Crandall’s decision Thursday to commit to Gonzaga was another big celebration for Zags fans – and disappointment for Gophers faithful.

Crandall, a former North Dakota and DeLaSalle guard, announced his decision on Twitter. He picked the Bulldogs over Minnesota and Xavier. The 6-foot-4, 180-pound senior is expected to graduate this summer and become immediately eligible to play for the 2018-19 season.

Even before landing Crandall on Thursday, Bulldogs coach Mark Few had a projected top-10 team in early preseason rankings. The Zags were 32-5 and reached the Sweet 16 last season. They return starters Josh Perkins, Zach Norvell Jr. and Killian Tillie, along with their top NBA prospect Rui Hachimura.

The Gophers lose out on Crandall, but they return All-Big Ten forward Jordan Murphy and a talented backcourt of Amir Coffey, Dupree McBrayer and Isaiah Washington. Their 2018 recruiting class includes freshmen Daniel Oturu, Jarvis Omersa and Gabe Kalscheur.

Richard Pitino, who finished 15-17 in his fifth season in 2017-18, still has one scholarship remaining for next season after 7-foot senior Matz Stockman transferred to Cal. Pitino added Wisconsin-Milwaukee grad transfer Brock Stull, Vanderbilt transfer Payton Willis and Pittsburgh transfer Marcus Carr this spring. Willis and Carr will sit out next season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Are there any other potential pieces out there to be added this year or will be have an open scholarship all year?
