All Things 2018 Gophers Basketball Recruiting Thread

This thread reminds me of when Monson was coach. Debating bit players for open scholarships in the Spring

No ****. I'd bank them at this point. I'm not sure stealing recruits from Holy Cross is going to put us over the top.

He is? Why did Woodward have offers from Penn St., Washington St., and Gonzaga while Larson has offers from Wofford and Presbyterian?

Admittedly I'm going off the eye test of having seen both of them play numerous times in high school.

I'll bookmark this post and we can re-visit in a couple years (Woodward had a pretty middling college career).

Graham Woodward averaged 29 PPG as a senior, 21 as a junior and was first team all state as a senior. Larson I believe averaged about 12 PPG this year. He was a better HS player than Reggie was for Edina on that team. I’ve watched Graham go off for 45+ more than once. He could score at will. I’ve watched both multiple times and Woodward was a superior player to Larson and it’s not close.

Larson is also playing with multiple Division 1 players and taking far less shots than Woodward did. I'll say Woodward is a much better shooter...Larson is quicker, much better passer, better on defense, etc.

Larson is a true assist first point guard. He was very impressive vs. De Lasalle during the year. He would get minutes if we don’t sign a Spring Transfer.

That would be a win win.

Adams attended Calvert Hall, same HS as former Gopher great Marc Wilson.

Would assume Kimani recruited him, but we look like the best team on his list from previous at quick glance

Too bad they can't put him on scholarship for the fall, get Geno Crandall to grad transfer mid season and then put Ryan to a walk on for the remainder of 2019. Then he goes back on scholarship the following season.

Picking up a sit-out transfer who has demonstrated that he can play would be better risk than banking a scholarship.

As far as JUCO guards, here's one who is listed as uncommitted (ranked #12 among JUCO players):

This dude committed to Illinois today.

Minnesota in Courtney Ramey’s top 10

Which is semi-relevant to us because Illinois was in Courtney Ramey's top 10, and they now have one of the top JUCO point guards as well as one of the top high school point guards committed for 2018, so I'd kinda think they won't be after Ramey anymore. Probably not a huge boost to us, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Thanks for the info. I do hope these openings result in some promising opportunities.

I would think "chips" are going to start to fall and kids will be making their decisions soon.
Ramey would be a OK with me!!

11th is the first day they can sign but not the last, correct?

So a lot should happen by Wednesday but still more could happen.

Everything works a little slower in the spring, though. Could be weeks before anything happens on our front. I'm wondering if the hole left by Kimani hinders the grad recruiting.

STrib: UAB graduate transfer PG Nick Norton expects to visit Gophers in May

With hundreds of Division I transfers looking to find new homes this spring, the Gophers recently got involved with Alabama Birmingham junior point guard Nick Norton.

Norton told the Star Tribune on Thursday that he expects to visit Minnesota’s program in early May, but he doesn’t have an exact date scheduled. The visit was first reported by CBSSports.com’s Jon Rothstein.

In 2014-15, Norton was named Conference USA All-Freshman team after averaging 7.2 points, 3.8 assists and shooting 39.1 percent from three-point range with 33 starts. His sophomore season, he averaged 8.9 points and 5.1 assists per game, but he suffered a season-ending ACL injury the following year.

Returning from injury, Norton was steady with 7.5 points and 4.9 assists this season for UAB. He ranked second in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.0) and also earned all-conference academic honors (3.5 GPA).

Go Gophers!!

That seems like it would be a pretty solid get. Not a huge scorer, but there’s a place for a guy who can distribute and shoot.

Kicking myself that I didn't make a post on Norton when his intention to grad transfer was announced as I thought he might be a target. My major concern when researching Norton was his injury history as it gave me some Fitzgerald flashbacks. Norton tore his ACL in high school and then tore it again at UAB (http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2017/12/healthy_nick_norton_making_an.html), he returned to play this past season and his stats were down in almost every category (not huge drops, but shooting %'s were all down, as were points, assists, free throw attempts, and steals despite playing 2 minutes more per game than his Sophomore season). That said, he's always had nice assist numbers, taken care of the ball, and shot above 80% from the line. His numbers suggest he can be a very solid backup point guard, and it's entirely possible he was 100% last year and just had a down year or that he will be better this year one more year removed from his latest major knee injury.

As a backup to IW Im okay with it. My guess is they are having a tough time recruiting decent PGs because they dont want to play behind Iw for 3 years

per Shooter:

Ryan Larson, the point guard for state champion Cretin-Derham Hall, last week committed to Wofford (S.C.) College, the same school where former Cretin-Derham star C.J. Neumann played, as well as Noah Dahlman from Braham.

Larson’s teammate, forward Sy Chapman, is getting lots of attention since the Raiders’ state title, including from Brian Dutcher, head coach at San Diego State. Dutcher will visit Cretin-Derham Hall on Wednesday. Others interested include Massachusetts, Loyola of Chicago, Bradley, Siena, Northern Iowa and Minnesota.

The Gophers have three tenders available.

Purdue board posters are speculating more playing time will be available for Norton with Buckeyes than Boilers.

Brendan Adams is following Dan Hurley and committing to UConn.

Trey McGowens is starting his official visit. He is a 2019 4-star guard who has considered reclassifying to 2018. From what I can tell, we are his only official visit so far.

It has been comical to see how many people think that Pitino has been asleep at the wheel on filling out his scholarships for this year.

I know McGowens reclassified to 2019 after originally being a member of the 2018 class. Can he decide to switch back? How does that work? Does the NCAA have to approve that, or can he choose to enroll in a school next fall without issue?
