Al Shaver, the voice of the North Stars for 26 years and the Gophers for three, passed away after a brief illness Monday on Vancouver Island at 96.

For 26 years, Shaver was the radio play-by-play broadcaster for the North Stars. When the team moved to Dallas in 1993, Shaver chose to stay in Minnesota.

Shaver then called games for the University of Minnesota men's hockey for three seasons until his retirement in 1996.

"Rest in peace to a legend and blessings to his family, friends and hockey fans around the world," the Wild said in a social media post.

 




Al, Herb Carneal, and Ray Christensen define my youth and probably collectively kept me out of a lot trouble. Way worse things could be done staying up after bed time than listening to the North Stars play the Kings.

Few people have no enemies. All I heard about Al is he was one of them. RIP.

Nothing better than Al calling an old Chuck Norris game on the radio. He loved calling the fights and his enthusiasm for the game most definitely influenced my fandom. A tough period of my life partially comforted by listening to North Stars games called by Al on the old AM. RIP.
