It's probably late to start a new thread, but I wasn't quite sure where to place my observations from 41 hours in "The City of the Crosses".

The City:
Very clean, very modern-at least around the campus area. Every store chain, lots of restaurants. Had breakfast burrito at Mesilla Valley Kitchen. Hot chili home fries and even hotter green chili, eggs and bacon. Seems to be more geared to the native Las Crucians.

Stayed at the Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces, very nice, less than $100. Pool, 2 bars, restaurant, plenty of eating places within a couple blocks.

People are very friendly and gracious.

The Stadium:
Of course small, and very old. Parts were built in 1933 and the stadium was renovated in 1978. Bench seats, you can buy seatbacks. The north end zone is tiered standing room and the south end is grass a grass berm. Scoreboard is large, but the graphics screen was beat up and the picture quality was poor (Aggievision?).

The parking is plentiful AND FREE. We were shocked to pull into the north tailgate lot, which was unattended and only a couple of blocks from the stadium. We found some Gopher fans right away and set up camp. Was met by Mr. Gopher and Some Day...Is Coming! and his family for beers and good cheer. Also met several fans from Tucson, Albuquerque, and Houston who had made the trek.

Police presence was constant but not intrusive. More concerned with broken glass than anything else. Beer not a problem.

THE GAME:
I'd like to think the perspective of how things went for us would be completely different that what was seen on TV or heard on the radio. I'll kind of go with a random stream of consciousness...

Condition of the field was pretty shabby. The NMSU band ripped it up during the pregame. When the sent their horseman around the field, his steed took up big chunks of sod. I'll bet there was about an inch of grass on top of an inch of topsoil. I was surprised that it seemed to hold up throughout. I wonder if cleat selection made a difference.

There was a very strong wind blowing 20 MPH throughout the first half. No flags on the uprights. I was very impressed that Hawthorne hit the 45 yard filed goal. He had to gauge the wind by the US flag that was 20 yards behind the end zone and in the NW corner. The wind dissipated somewhat after sunset, but not a lot. Not too warm, but you had to hydrate. It was obvious that when Maxx Williams went off that it was cramps.

Strangely, they had the NMSU cheerleaders in front of us and the Minnesota cheerleaders on the far side. They didn't show up with Goldy until the fourth quarter, and for one cheer. Weird.

The couple behind us has season tickets in our section at the Bank.

But for basically one play, the defense was nearly lights out in the first half. I don't know if it was noted that someone got a hand on the first NMSU punt. It was so loud that you would have been sure it was blocked. As it was, they got a hell of a roll.

Engel's catch was a great effort. He had to sort of leap at the end to haul it in, which is why he fell at the four.

On the long NMSU punt, M. Jones was standing on the wrong yard line to start. By the time he adjusted, it was too late and over his head.

Williams catch on the ensuing drive was a thing of beauty. It's not hard to believe this guy is going to be the best TE in the B1G soon.

Cobb's TD run was a weaving, churning, beaut as well. A well deserved score. Nice 94 yard drive.

After the NMSU score, Rodrick Williams blew up the Aggies. It was the most dominating, crushing rushing drive by one guy I've seen since Barber or Russell.

Jones' PR was amazing to see live. After he had been crushed (a foul) on the first return, misjudged the second, and then bobbled this one, the ensuing run was fantastic. It totally deflated the Aggies and their fans. I think about 1/4 went home at the half.

Third Quarter was pretty dull, but Hageman's tackle on fourth down made up for it.

On NMSU's 4th down gambit, the QB had it if he had just fallen down forward. Instead, he then went to his left and retracted.

Williams' 17 yard run to the two was as about a crushing run as I've seen. Right in front of us. The popping from the pads and Williams hits on the NMSU players were loud! The Minnesota fans greatly appreciated the effort. His subsequent run was bizarre. He got hit after her was in the end zone and had veered toward the bleachers. NMSU then forced him back over the goal line to the 1/2 yard. Mattered not as Nelson leaped over.

Hill's return was fun as well. As he pulled out of the pile, he had a half dozen blockers with him. His run and score was right in front of us.

In the end, the defense really didn't look that bad. NMSU threw the ball around, but the last score was 2nd team against 2nd team, and the two fourth down stops were just that, stops. Better to have NMSU throwing it about on us week two than Indiana. This experience on the road was a good one for this team. It will pay dividends down the line.

The only downside to the entire evening was a jerk Aggie fan. After the last two Minnesota TD's he ran down in front of some Gopher fans from Texas that had come up from the game. He would do the "Aggie Shootin' Pistols" right in their faces. Why he was celebrating our TD's I don't know--just a jerk. I think he was trying to impede their view. He was warned twice by security to knock it off. The third time, one of our friends from Texas popped him. It turned into a brawl with a dozen or so. Cops came to break it up and some dumb student postured one them and threated a cop, resulting in a face-down on the concrete as he was cuffed. They cleared out the entire section next to us for the rest of the game and cuffed the protagonist and the Gopher fan. I'm pretty sure they ended up with no charges after a damn long talking to. I think the dumbass student spent the night in jail.

We had a couple of beers after the game in a nearly empty parking lot. Made some new friends and came away with a win.

Anyone else that was there can add.

NMSU then forced him back over the goal line to the 1/2 yard. They reviewed it, but couldn't make a decision because there was NO VIDEO. This had to be true, as the ref put on the headset for about 5 seconds and then said the play would stand as called. Mattered not as Nelson leaped over.

Hill's return was fun as well. As he pulled out of the pile, he had a half dozen blockers with him. His run and score was right in front of us.

Thank you for sharing I enjoyed the read

Thanks for your perspective! Those NMSU hooligans are the worst.

Nice recap, ty.

Lucky for that Gopher fan from Texas that Aggievision pretty much guarantees his punch was not caught on video.

All he'd have to do is fake a left jab before throwing a haymaker with the right and the camera guy would have completely fallen for the fake...

highwayman, I'd be curious as to your estimated guess at.....

the number of Gopher fans in attendance at the game? The AggieVision® camera (note singularity) only panned towards that corner of the stadium a couple of times to show a smattering of fans clad in gold which I assume was the Gopher contingent.

Thanks for sharing your experience, highwayman! Definitely a good read! Much appreciated!

I'd guess somewhere around 300. Probably the fewest out of the 46 away games I've been to - at least with the road trips to MAC schools in Ohio (and Florida Atlantic), we'd get a great turnout from parents. Wasn't the case in Las Cruces, obviously.

Highwayman summed things up very well. I spent Friday afternoon/night in Albuquerque and came away impressed with that city. Wouldn't hesitate to go back if the Gophers played the Lobos at some point. Riding solo, I drove down to Las Cruces on Saturday morning and went straight to High Desert Brewery, which was in a really odd location, seemingly in the middle of a residential neighborhood with no markings. Very good beer and great food, and met up with a couple of Gopher fans who came in from Phoenix. I told them I'd try to meet up with them in the tailgate lot after checking in to my hotel, but never got the chance because they spotted me on my walk to the stadium and had me join them the rest of the night (Dan/Jeff, if you're reading, thanks again for letting me tag along and for the hospitality).

Heavy police presence in the parking lot, though mostly just cruising around in their cars, but the student section brawl in the fourth quarter showed why they needed so many officers. Had a nice time downing a couple of beers and reminiscing on Gopher football misery before heading into the stadium.

Not an impressive stadium by any means, but it serves its purpose. NMSU has "Smoki the Wonder Dog" run onto the field to fetch the tee after each kickoff, which is cheesy but enjoyable. Their band touts themselves as the "World's Most Dangerous Band" for some reason. On each Gophers third down, the PA guy would say "It's third down.....and cowbell" and there would be a smattering of fans ringing cowbells. Mississippi State it was not. Fans were hospitable, and had a group of NMSU fans buy me a couple shots at the bar postgame.

Game thoughts: Donovahn Jones is going to be a weapon. I know he had one drop, but he had a hell of a block on the outside to spring Nelson for a big gain on the first field goal drive, and his stiff arm on the first touchdown drive was a beaut.

Offensive line really struggled for the game's first 20 minutes or so, but wore NMSU down the rest of the way. Big relief after the UNLV struggles.

Alex Keith made two really nice plays, tracking down the ball carrier near the line of scrimmage from all the way across the field. Hopefully he can play through the broken hand - he looks good.

Linebackers were out of position quite a bit. Damien Wilson looked the best of the bunch.

I noticed on NMSU's first two or three possessions, Hageman wasn't even on the field until third down. Loved watching him absolutely blow up a couple of plays, and I love the Gopher fans yelling "Sheeeeeeeeed" afterwards.

Williams proved he can be the guy to carry the rock, but his pass blocking needs work.

SPECIAL TEAMS. Not just Marcus Jones - Hawthorne had a great night, and the kickoff coverage was outstanding.

All in all, glad I made the trip. That will have to tide me over until we regain the Pig.

You already gave us more than Aggievision did and thank you for representing us at the game!

Very funny! Did you notice the camera guys or guy got better as the game progressed?

Thanks Jike. Glad you had safe travels.

Thanks Jike. Just curious as to how many Gophers fans attended the game. You set the number just like a Vegas oddsmaker.

If the Gopher fan base doesn't travel more than 300 people to the New Mexico State game I'll buy you lunch/drinks at Pittsburg Blue at Arbor Lakes in Maple Grove You don't even have to reciprocate. Cheers...

Looking forward to see what Ruppy estimates.

I lived in Las Cruces back in the mid-90's, and 'clean' and 'modern' might be two of the LAST terms I would have used to describe it. My fellow non-natives would refer to it as 'Lost Causes', as it was generally a poor, deteriorating town with not much going for it other than the University and relatively close air bases. I got out of there as fast as I could.

My understanding is that since that time, however, the city has grown substantially (I believe it's been amongst the fastest growing cities in the country), with a lot of retirees coming to town as an affordable snow-bird destination. Sounds like this influx, and the economic development that surely must follow have helped the city in general break out of it's relative obscurity and dreariness. Good to hear!

But most importantly... what song did they play between the 3rd and 4th quarters?

I remember after the NMSU loss in 2011 a good number of their fans were talking trash about Kill's seizure on twitter. Every fan base has their bad apples, and I'm sure most aren't like that, but I also wouldn't have mind playing them a few more times and winning by 70.

Thanks for the recap. I've never been to an away game before, so I like the perspective.

I agree on Jike's numbers. There were a few on the home side as well. FYI, I tailgated with Dan and Jeff before the game! Gopherhole came through getting us diehards together.

Well it's good to be back on GH. I haven't posted in a long long time; I let Mr. gopherfaith--aka Highwayman--take the reins for a while!

Few things I would add to his ruminations, in no particular order:

Rodrick Williams looked like a bowling ball out there, crushing players in his way. Reminded me a bit of Gary Russell barreling his way through.

The funniest thing to me about the NMSU cheerleaders who were stationed in front of us Gopher fans all night: They kept doing the same cheer, "Aggies...(clap clap)...Aggies...(clap clap)..." throughout the game and we gamely Gopher fans would fill in the silence between their chants with "Gophers...Gophers." I guess we took custody of that particular cheer and I'm not sure why they kept repeating it!!

Maxx Williams will be a force. Great hands and powers his way through. Reminds me a lot of Spaeth.

Bo Darville asked: "But most importantly... what song did they play between the 3rd and 4th quarters?" (Sorry, been off here so long can't remember how to now embed someone else's quote in the middle of my post!)
Absolutely no idea in most cases what songs they played. Bizarre choices. I'm old, but not that old. Sometimes there wasn't any music at all. Kind of felt like being at a high school stadium sometimes.

My overall takeaway: Road trips are fun but nothing better than Saturday football in TCF Bank Stadium. We're representin' from Phoenix now, but still feel the same way: I LOVE GOPHER FOOTBALL!
