A few years back, a pretty highly regarded recruit appeared to be a lock for the Gophers. Then, Lydon Murtha went on his official visit. Lots of twist and turns to the story, but when all was said and done, the sure thing turned around and went to the Cornhuskers.
I can't believe that any "entertainment" of that kind would be allowed anymore, but what the heck does a typical recruit get now when he has an official visit?

Had a couple roommates in college that were in track. They would host recruits all the time. Basically, they would take them around campus, take them out to eat somewhere nice, take them to a basketball/football game, and have them over along with some of the other track guys girls. Just give them a feel for campus and future teammates. Possibly different for football recruits, but more than likely fairly similar. I believe they also meet with the coaches and people regarding the academics.

kid gets flown in business class= entertainment
stays at a 5 star hotel= entertainment
eats at five star restaurants= entertainment
premium seating at a football and basketball game that the ordinary person pays top dollar for
= entertainment

going to on campus parties after said game where all the pretty girls are at= entertainment

going to the coaches house where is beautiful wife is the hostess= entertainment

i can go on and on

Official visits!

I think an "official" visit is when it is santioned by the University for the big "OK" to have the athlete on their campus. That way everyone knows they are coming in town for the big one.
Am I sort of right on this one?

FWIW,

The "entertainment" CWCWCW speaks of involves going to strip clubs and going home with strippers at least in the case of a former o-line recruit from Hutchinson.

I'm pretty sure the track visits are just a little different from the FB visits ;)

Here's the NCAA defenition on officials:

http://www.collegesportsscholarships.com/campus-visits.htm (this link provides more info):

Senior Year

You can make up to five Official - expense paid visits to college campuses. the visit to the campus cannot be longer than forty eight hours in duration. you are are not allowed to have an official visit until after your first day of classes of your senior year.

College coaches need to have an official ACT or SAT score and a copy of your official high school transcript before you can make a visit.

Coaches can make telephone calls and send written correspondence as per the rules for your junior year.

It equals travel, they have to get there somehow. Should they take Greyhound?

stays at a 5 star hotel= entertainment

Got to sleep somewhere. Should it be at a Motel 6?

eats at five star restaurants= entertainment

Got to eat somewhere. Should it be from the McDonald's dollar menu?

premium seating at a football and basketball game that the ordinary person pays top dollar for = entertainment

It's funny how coaches want recruits to actually watch the team play. Should the seats be way up in the nosebleed section?

going to on campus parties after said game where all the pretty girls are at= entertainment

Should they sit around playing parchisi? Or if they do go out to parties, does that mean the girls have to be ugly?

going to the coaches house where is beautiful wife is the hostess= entertainment

Would it make any difference if the coach had an ugly wife? Going over to someone's house is some pretty wild entertainment. I bet he has a big screen TV. And cheetos.

i can go on and on

So can I, so can I...

So, basically, the recruits should arrive by Greyhound, stay at the Motel 6, eat off the McDonald's dollar menu, get tickets in the nosebleed section, play parchisi with ugly girls, and only go to the coaches house if the wife is ugly.

RR; It seemed to me that Pops was explaining those things not putting them down.

I didn't understand this post whatsoever.

Are you being sarcastic, or did you misinterpret Gopher Pops response?

They are only allowed to fly coach according to regulations.

Given his statement "I can't believe that any "entertainment" of that kind would be allowed anymore, but what the heck does a typical recruit get now when he has an official visit?", that conclusion doesn't sound reasonable.

He get his questions answered, and a chance to emmerse himself in the environment for a few days to see how he might fit. And have some fun.

I envisioned that statement to be referencing Murtha's "strip club" visit; something he didn't complain about until after he took the Nebraska offer by the way. Pops response just seemed to be pointing out that in the long run it may ALL be entertainment. Not an endorsement nor condemnation.

Being that my son was a highly recruited player in the 08 class that is a part of the gopher nation and is in tempe as we speak
and being that i was a highly recruited athlete and also played division one football
to co sign what others have said i was explaining that recruiting trips are all about entertainment
you are trying to convince a top athlete to choose your school so you show them the best

as far as going to a strip club and going home with strippers is really not needed today
that is why they make girls gone wild videos
the strip club is at the house party

and yes they go to house parties
there is a player or a friend of a player that has an apartment off campus that has a party after the game or some honeys miraculously show up at the dorm room
